Derrick Procell :: HELLO MOJO!
|
|
Catfood Records announces an August 1 release date for Hello Mojo!, the label debut from Chicago-based soul/blues belter Derrick Procell. Hello Mojo! was produced by award-winning blues singer/guitarist and fellow Catfood labelmate Zac Harmon, recorded at Sonic Ranch, Tornillo, Texas, with The Rays as the backing band.
Derrick Procell and Catfood Records founder Bob Trenchard first connected during the early days of the pandemic in 2020. It started with Procell getting a call from another Catfood artist, James Armstrong, who had gotten Derrick’s name from Chicago harmonica legend Billy Branch. James was producing a couple of songs for Catfood: “Rise Up Resist” and “Black Man’s Justice,” and eventually turned into duets with Soul/Blues powerhouse Annika Chambers.
Derrick Procell is a triple threat soul/blues man: a soulful singer with a big, hairy baritone voice; a harmonica player who's melodic and tasty while playing down and dirty; and a two-fisted piano player who drives the rhythm home. He’s also a smart songwriter who digs deep into soul and blues, music you hear and never forget.
"...a great blues voice, quite like Gregg Allman or Delbert McClinton...material is intelligent and witty." - John Mitchell, Crossroads Blues Society
"Procell’s stuff is smart, creative and yet as deeply soulful as any."
- Jim Hynes, Elmore
Derrick's been writing songs for over 40 years. Beginning with writing for his live performances, he later moved to studio recording exclusively. Derrick’s songs have been recorded by artists such as The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Logan Daniels, Melissa Manchester, BigLlou Johnson and The Cashbox Kings, as well as Shemekia Copeland.
Derrick also writes, performs, and produces music for TV and movies. You've heard his songs on My Name is Earl, True Blood, Criminal Minds, Boston Legal, Saving Grace, The Office, This Is Us, The Americans, and King of the Hill. Movie credits include the Oscar-nominated film, Lady Bird, and Netflix original Holidaze.

20th Annual Blues Festival Guide Magazine Digital Edition Released on our website
|
You can not only get a hard copy of the magazine via select festivals, blues societies or by ordering, but our 20th Anniversary digital edition of the Blues Festival Guide has been launched and is available on our website! Click the image at left to read and enjoy all 84 pages. Don't forget to turn on the speaker to hear Tulle Brae singing "Seven Bridges."
Blues music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd. Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of presenting blues to a wider audience, and as you know, offers our weekly, electronic newsletter: Blues Festival E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.
Blues legend Bobby Rush calls our magazine: "The roadmap to everything blues". Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the blues community includes articles from Grammy winner Victor Wainwright, Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.
Our cover by photographer Marilyn Stringer features the talented Tullie Brae and Calvin Johnson at the 2021 North Atlantic Blues Festival!
You can also order your own hard copy here!

Holidays, Birthdays and... Just In Case
|
• July 30
International Friendship Day
Birthdays upcoming of note:
July 28 Roy Rogers (1950), Mike Bloomfield (1943-1981), Junior Kimbrough (1930-1998); July 30 Buddy Guy (1936), Big Jack Johnson (1940-2011), Otis Taylor (1948), Michael Burks (1957-2012); July 31 Roy Milton (1907-1983), Ahmet Ertegun (Atlantic Records founder 1923-2006); Aug 2-Big Walter Price (1917-2012), Mark Naftalin (1944); Aug 3- Mercy Dee Walton (1915–1962); Aug 4-Louis Armstrong (1901-1971); Aug 6- Willie Lee Brown (1900–1952); Aug 7-Magic Slim Morris Holt (1937–2013), Annika Chambers-DesLauriers (1992); Aug 8-Joe Tex (1933-1982), Jimmy Witherspoon (1920–1997); Aug 10-Ronnie Spector (1945), Grego Anderson (1968), Leo Fender (1908-1991), Mighty Mike Schermer (1966)
Just in Case: Aug 5 is "International Beer Day!" Yes, April 7th was coined "National Beer Day" but alas, I see Aug 5th is "INTERNATIONAL Beer Day! Man, somebody (a guy from Santa Cruz, California actually) loves their beer and didn't notice there was already a day named for it! But might as well celebrate (responsibly) the beers of all nations together on a single day.
Yes, the oldest and most venerable of all beverages, people have been making beer for over 5,000 years; in fact, the oldest recorded recipe we know of is for beer. Looks like China actually tops beer consumption over the USA, but the Czech Republic consumes more per capita.
Beer has, of course, inspired blues songs... for instance "Beer Bottle Boogie," "Beer Drinking Woman," "Gimme A Pigfoot," "Hey Bartender," "Beer Drinking Daddy," "One Bourbon, One Scotch & One Beer," and "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers." Whatcha got?
