Music legends Buddy Guy. John Hiatt and Sonny Landreth Join Forces
|
Blues stalwart, 86-year-old Buddy Guy and prolific, influential songwriter John Hiatt & The Goners featuring slide guitar master Sonny Landreth, will perform in concert Saturday August 6th at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, Florida.
They are not only fine and soul-deep entertainers, but they are full-on influencers!
Hiatt has been sharing his profound catalog of original music for over four decades and in that time his natural prowess has served many an artist well. Artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Bettye LaVette, Albert Lee, Kenny Neal, Shaun Murphy, Joe Louis Walker, Aaron Neville, Buddy Guy and countless more garnered hits with his tunes.
The title of Buddy Guy's latest album, The Blues Is Alive and Well, says it all for this international, legendary blues treasure. Says Guy, “I’m always trying to make an album that someone accidentally plays where some kid hears it, picks up a guitar, and helps keep the blues alive.” Many artists have also had hits thanks to Guy’s writing like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tommy Castro, Tab Benoit, Bernard Allison and many more.
Sonny Landreth is right up there himself as an awe-inspiring example and deliverer of solid musicianship as well as hits for himself and others like the Neville Brothers with “Congo Square,” and Charlie Musselwhite’s cover of “Shooting For The Moon,” among others penned.
If you miss this spectacular gathering of talent, Guy, and Hiatt featuring Landreth will be performing in concert again at the Santa Fe Opera in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Weds Sept 14th, Sept 15 at Pike’s Peak, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Sept 18th at the Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Hiatt and Landreth also have several shows coming up together that are sure to be dazzling and introspective.

Bubba and The Big Bad Blues :: DRIFTING
|
|
For Drifting, Southern California guitarist and singer/songwriter, Christopher “Bubba” Clerc, enlisted drummer producers, Tony Braunagel and Nick D’Virgilio. To quote Braunagel “Drummers make good producers because drummers count everything off, make everything have a pace, make everything have an atmosphere, drive everything forward, and listen more than people think they do.”
Clerc’s been leading his powerhouse band for over a decade along with veteran drummer Jason “JR” Lozano and bassist Doug “Mug” Swanson. Half of the sessions’ ten original tracks and two choice covers took place at Ultra Tone Studios in Studio City, California, where Braunagel’s produced many award-winning records, bringing in the Phantom Blues Horns’ (Joe Sublett on sax) and ace keyboardist Mike Finnigan (R.I.P.). The second half was recorded at Sweetwater Studios in Fort Wayne, Indiana by Nick D’Virgilio; (Tears for Fears, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, etc.) who’s been voted a Top 10 progressive rock drummer of all time. They meshed their unique voices with Bubba’s to build the Big Bad Blues sound that’s a mixture of Texas Blues, SoCal Blues Rock, Southern Soul and New Orleans R&B.
From swinging “I Want To Make Love To You Baby,” to gritty rocker “Helping Hand,” to title track “Drifting” highlighting Bubba’s depth as a singer songwriter and a classic R&B arrangement from Richard “LaBamba” Rosenberg (Conan O'Brien, Springsteen, Southside Johnny), to blues rocker, “Do What’s Right,” Texas shuffle, “She’s Your Problem Now,” to “Amongst Butterflies,” where Bubba shows off his considerable guitar skills.
“Keep Moving On” a roots rock singalong, precedes Rick Solem (Dave Alvin’s Guilty Men) burning up the 88 keys, on rocker “I Own The Road.” It’s party time with “Lose These Blues,” then down-tempo blues “I’ve Been Down,” and rowdy Southern Rock ramble, “If You Need Me,” drip with greasy slide guitar. Acoustic ballad “My Love,” pays tribute to a lost loved one for a sparkling finale.

20th Annual Blues Festival Guide Magazine Digital Edition Released on our website
|
You can not only get a hard copy of the magazine via select festivals, blues societies or by ordering, but our 20th Anniversary digital edition of the Blues Festival Guide has been launched and is available on our website! Click the image at left to read and enjoy all 84 pages. Don't forget to turn on the speaker to hear Tulle Brae singing "Seven Bridges."
Blues music is America’s original roots music. It is still being picked on the front porches of tar-paper shacks, but just as frequently, it is fired up loud and proud in front of a barroom (or festival) crowd. Blues reflects hardship, trouble and strife, but also perseverance and strength of character – to know the blues is to be in touch with your true spirit and soul. The Blues Festival Guide is committed to the process of presenting blues to a wider audience, and as you know, offers our weekly, electronic newsletter: Blues Festival E-Guide (free subscription) and the popular annual national print (and digital) magazine which comes out each spring.
Blues legend Bobby Rush calls our magazine: "The roadmap to everything blues". Indeed, the articles offer something for everyone, all blues related, of course. This year’s engaging editorial from aficionados in the blues community includes articles from Grammy winner Victor Wainwright, Mitch Woods, Reverend Billy C. Wirtz and Roger Stolle among others.
Our cover by photographer Marilyn Stringer features the talented Tullie Brae and Calvin Johnson at the 2021 North Atlantic Blues Festival!
You can also order your own hard copy here!

Holidays, Birthdays and... Just In Case
|
• Month of August (okay, wacky) Holidays:
"International Pirate, Catfish, Picnic, Peach, and Romance Awareness Month"... time to get your sexy, romantic picnic-self in gear!
Birthdays upcoming of note:
Aug 4-Louis Armstrong (1901-1971); Aug 6- Willie Lee Brown (1900–1952); Aug 7-Magic Slim Morris Holt (1937–2013), Annika Chambers-DesLauriers (1992); Aug 8-Joe Tex (1933-1982), Jimmy Witherspoon (1920–1997); Aug 10-Ronnie Spector (1945), Grego Anderson (1968), Leo Fender (1908-1991), Mighty Mike Schermer (1966); Aug 11-"Crying" Sam Collins (1887-1949), Aug 12-Percy Mayfield (1920-1984), Roy Gaines (1934-2021); Aug 13-Jimmy McCracklin (1921-2012); Aug 14-Larry Graham (1946), Son Seals (1942-2004); Aug 15-Buster Brown (1911-1976), Jackie Brenston (1930-1979), Bobby Byrd (1934-2007); Aug 16-Eddie Kirkland (1928-2011), Melvin "Lil' Son" Jackson (1915-1976); Aug 17-Luther Allison (1939-1997)
Just in Case: Aug 9th is "National Book Lovers Day." Books, much like songs, help us understand each other, feel less alone, and put our complex emotions into words. But I do love books for the photos and art as well. I can totally escape there. I have sat for hours on library floors looking at art or music type books. I've never been much of a "reader" per se, not like some friends I know. Maybe a bit of ADHD I admit. I'd be a champion of a "National Caption Day!" I learned an awful lot from the captions and photographs in National Geographic growing up. But I do love history and I read shorter books on occasion and books on blues history and artist biographies. There are some extraordinary, amazing pictorial books related to the blues as well as intensive reading. I Googled Blues books and unbelievably see a list of 900+! What's on your list?
