Tickets are $18 per day and kids 12 and under are no charge with paying adult. Come on out - put the grief and isolation of Covid behind you and heal – you know music can do that. Volunteer! It takes a lot of people to put on a Festival. If you help them out for three hours (before, during or after the event) you get your $18 admission fee back and a half price discount on a T Shirt.
Dubbed the 'World's Largest Backyard Party" by D.C. Minner and "Awesome" by National Geographic, this "Must See Event" (says the Blues Foundation) will not disappoint. So, hey everybody…tell everybody... that in Oklahoma, hidden out in the woods, is a little old juke joint called the Down Home Blues Club – it's authentic, funky and very much alive!

Blues Foundation names Kimberly Horton Interim President and CEO
|
(Memphis, TN) - The Blues Foundation named former music manager/agent and former board member Kimberly Horton the Interim President and CEO of the 42-year organization.
With the recent departure of former President and CEO Judith Black, Horton says she looks forward to leading the Blues Foundation to its next chapter and the organization’s upcoming signature events including International Blues Challenge in January 2023 and the Blues Music Awards in May 2023.
A native of Jackson, Mississippi, the longtime manager and agent, and the founder of Heathrow Muzik Box, LLC, Horton has guided the careers of many internationally renowned Blues artists during her 15-year career as a manager/agent. A graduate of Belhaven and Jackson University in Jackson, MS, Horton received two master’s degrees in Management and Public Health.
“My passion has always been to work and collaborate with artists and watch their artistic development and growth,” says Horton. “I also had the rare opportunity to sit at the feet of the elders and that’s where I gained most of my institutional knowledge and experience in the Blues genre. I never thought I would work closely with such artists as Taj Mahal and Johnny Rawls. They are living legends and I look forward to working with the new generation of blues artists and to bringing more diversity into the Blues Foundation.”
“On behalf of the Board of Directors for The Blues Foundation, we welcome Kimberly Horton,” says Chairman Scott Fitzke. “During the past five years or more, many of the board members had an opportunity to spend quality time with Kimberly as a dedicated board member. Blues music is her life. We felt that her commitment to the board, coupled with her love for music and her professional experience in management, strategic team leadership, and conflict management, would be much-needed assets to the organization during this time of transition...”

David Lumsden :: ROOTED IN THE BLUES
|
|
Midwestern guitarist David Lumsden sophomore album, Rooted In The Blues, could easily be described as a tribute to those heady days when guitar heroes dominated the airwaves and turntables of young music fans. The ten-song collection of three original tracks and seven reimagined classics run the gamut of blues, blues rock shuffles, boogies, a countryfied train beat, FM pop and a few surprises. Lumsden is backed by his hard-working band featuring Tim Bahn on keys, Gary Davis on bass and drummer Jim Engel.
The album begins with a faithful rendering of a Chuck Berry prototype from Eddy Clearwater, “I Wouldn't Lay My Guitar Down,” complete with barrelhouse piano and rumbling baritone sax. Lumsden’s “Runaway (Blues Train)” is a down home good time. John Lee Hooker created the mold for electric guitar with “Boogie Chillen’’ in 1948, and Lumsden’s “Ruthless Boogie” follows that patented form and mashes in a little ZZ Top and Deep Purple to bring it into this century.
The band then transforms Lieber/Stoller’s “Hound Dawg” into a 70’s funk number. The lovely ballad “Your Memory,” composed by Lumsden’s old friend, jazz guitarist Greg Pasenko, reminds us that six strings also come in the acoustic variety. The bump and grind blues, “Hooked On Something,” is followed by a spot-on instrumental cover of “Josie,” paying homage to Steely Dan’s Larry Carlton The 12-bar blues, “Everyday I Have The Blues,” gives Lumsden’s opportunity to acknowledge the impact of all the renditions he’s heard and their impact on his life. He then honors another guitar hero in a loving “Ode To Jimi AKA Slow Burn.”
Recorded live at the end of 2021 “Everything Is Broken,” serves as a charming bonus track. David Lumsden has spent his life as a student of the guitar arts and pays it forward with this heartfelt offering.

Just In Case... plus Holidays & Birthdays
|
• August is "American Artist Appreciation Month"
Birthdays upcoming of note:
Aug 26-Jimmy Rushing (1901-1972); Aug 29-Charlie Parker (1920-1955), Dinah Washington (1924-1963); Aug 30-Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson (1934-1976); Aug 31-Joanna Connor (1962), Van Morrison (1945); Sept 2-Billy Preston (1946-2006); Sept 3-Memphis Slim (1915-1988), Freddie King (1934-1976); Sept 4-Meade "Lux" Lewis (1905-1964); Sept 5-Sunnyland Slim (1907-1995); Sept 6-Jimmy Reed (1925-1976); Sept 7-Little Milton Campbell (1934-2005), Latimore (1939); Sept 8-Harmonica Fats (1927-2000), Guitar Shorty aka David Kearney (1939-2022 pictured), Derrick "D'Mar" Martin; Sept 9-Otis Redding (1941-1967), Inez Foxx (1942); Sept 10-Roy Brown (1925-1981), Johnny Rawls (1951)
Just in Case: August 26 is "National Dog Day"... References to dogs appear in a lot of blues songs good and bad. We sympathize in "I wouldn't treat a dog the way you treated me," (Bobby Blue Bland), and "I ain't gonna be your lowdown dog," (Big Joe Turner) so "I'm gonna buy me a dog to take the place of you" (Duke Robillard). Hey now "how come my dog don't bark when you come around" (Guitar Shorty). "You ain't nothing but a hound dog," declares Big Mama Thornton. And there's the beggin' like "are you gonna throw me a bone tonite" (Toni Price), "I'm foamin' at the mouth baby can't you see" ("Mad Dog" Johnny Winter") and "baby, let me be your salty dog" (Mississippi John Hurt). And the resolve, "I'm just like a mad dog, I snaps at everything I meet" (Mary Butler/Walter Vinson), and "I don't want no watch dog, I wanna man right now" (Etta James).... and yes, the list goes on!
