Farewell to our longtime BFG Correspondent Tom Andrews
|
The Blues Festival Guide family is very sad to learn that our dear friend and longtime BFG sales representative Tom Andrews passed away this morning, September 1, 2022.
Tom came from a strong publishing, advertising, and journalism background, and this, combined with his passion for blues, were the perfect skills and experience to help the Blues Festival Guide grow.
Tom sold advertising for our magazine and digital platforms for over 9 years and his clients loved him. He was also our festival correspondent and photographer and would report live with festival photos for our social media pages contributing countless fine and heartfelt images and blues experiences over the years.
Tom traveled to many festivals in his motorhome and made many lifelong friends in the process — especially at the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest which he attended religiously, maybe even since the 70s.
Tom had been ill for quite a while and because of his health, Tom hung up his motorhome keys a year ago and moved to Texas to live out his last days with his loving daughter and her family, where he passed peacefully in his sleep. This Southern Gentleman will be greatly missed.
R.I.P. Tom... You are now forever with the blues.
Your friends forever at BFG and those in the Blues community that were honored to cross your gentle path over the years.

Professor Louie & The Crowmatix :: STRIKE UP THE BAND
|
|
Strike Up The Band by Professor Louie & The Crowmatix on Woodstock Records, has nine of ten biographical and creative original songs written by Professor Louie, Miss Marie and one co-write with John Platania. This legacy all-star roots band continues to grow and these talented musicians, singers and songwriters wrote these songs that reflect a unique vision of relationships and thoughts about this tumultuous world and the times we live in. The ninth song, “End Of The Show,” (unknown writer) is a tune originally recorded by Richard Manuel of Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame group, The Band, which was never released. Louie came across this song on a poorly recorded cassette when he was working as producer for a box set by The Band.
The Crowmatix: Professor Louie (The Band) Miss Marie (Rick Danko) Gary Burke (Bob Dylan, Joe Jackson) John Platania (Van Morrison) Frank Campbell (Levon Helm) The Woodstock Horns with arrangements by Gary Burke on three songs gives Strike Up The Band a special twist. Bob Ludwig, mastering genius of all time, makes the recordings come to life.
With this remarkable 16th release Strike Up The Band, the prolific songwriters and indefatigable musicians Professor Louie & The Crowmatix once again show the world why they are truly roots music royalty.

Just in Case: "World Beard Day" is September 3rd. Beard trends over the years include looks like a lumberjack, biker, and classic, and lately the hipster look that's yep, a throwback to the lumberjack! LOL! Some historians say that a day to honor beards, which were seen as a status symbol, was celebrated by the Danish Vikings as far back as 800 A.D. Well, you know I'm going to dive in and aim to mention a few blues artists that sport beards or did in the past.
Off the top of my head of course I instantly think of ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons. In my search I see American Blues Scene did an article on the 10 Best Beards in The Blues a few years back (great minds think alike or eventually catchup). Among those listed are Taj Mahal, Reverend Peyton of the Big Damn Blues Band, Jeff Jenson, and the late Sam Chatmon. These days Tab Benoit seems to be letting his beard flag really fly as opposed to the snug look of say, Sugaray Rayford's beard. Okay, the list is way longer then room here but I always hope to inspire you one way or the other... even if just for fun.
