The Blues Society upcoming documentary pays tribute
|
The upcoming documentary, The Blues Society, by filmmaker and scholar Dr. Augusta Palmer, pays tribute to the artists who performed at the Memphis Country Blues Festival in the late 1960's and of Bohemia in 1960s America.
This re-evaluation of the 1960s is seen through the lens of the festival from 1966-1969. It’s a story of Blues masters like Furry Lewis and Robert Wilkins, who had attained fame in the 1920s but were living in obscurity by the 1960s. It’s also the story of a group of white artists from the North and the South who created a celebration of African American music in a highly segregated city.
The Blues Society follows the festival from its start as an impromptu happening, through a period of cross-pollination with New York’s East Village scene, and up to the 1969 Festival, which mushroomed into a 3-day event and garnered substantial print and television coverage - including an appearance on Steve Allen’s national PBS show, Sounds of Summer. The documentary contains some fantastic footage of that 1969 festival.
"I really got to know the Blues from my dad Robert Palmer,” says Dr. Palmer in an interview by Radio WBGO's Douglas Doyle, “and he's one of the subjects in this documentary… He was a writer for the New York Times and Rolling Stone, a music critic who wrote a book called Deep Blues which is still used frequently as a textbook for people studying the Blues.”
The Blues Society feature documentary is currently in Postproduction. You can help them finish this important film and preserve blues history by donating here.

Vaneese Thomas :: FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT
|
|
The amazingly powerful voice of Vaneese Thomas ninth album is titled Fight The Good Fight. Beyond her vocal prowess the collection of a dozen new tracks showcases the songwriting skills of Thomas, who wrote/co-wrote the songs. Thomas co-produced the album with her life partner, Wayne Warnecke, at Peaceful Waters Music during the pandemic lockdown. The breadth of style and theme reflects Thomas’ career with a cross section of soul, gospel, blues, country, and Americana flavors with themes of romance, socio-political discourse, spirituality, celebration, and love.
Thomas invited many special guests to contribute to the effort including Scott Sharrard (Gregg Allman’s musical director), Bo Mitchell, Lisa Fischer, Tash Neal, along with the Memphis Horns - trumpeter Marc Franklin and saxophonist Kirk Smothers (Drive By Truckers) - and harmonica from Corrin Huddleston. Two veterans of LateNight TV, bassist Will Lee from the Letterman show and drummer Shawn Pelton from SNL, and a slew of other players sat in for special sessions in Brooklyn, Nevada, and the famed Royal Studios in Memphis. Emotional performances like the ones found on Fight The Good Fight come naturally to someone like Vaneese, where making great music is the family business.
“Vaneese Thomas is a powerhouse vocal of positivity and hope on this record. Her lyrics observe the issues and challenges we face in these modern times and uplift us as we navigate toward harmonizing with each other as she does from song to song. Her voice is the true and seamless bridge of musical roots from soul to country and missing no highways in between. From harmonica to fiddle and raging electric guitars, this record lives in a completely timeless realm of beauty.” - Valerie June

Just in Case: September 15 is "Get Ready Day" and immediately thought of Muddy Waters singing... "I'm ready for you, I hope you're ready for me!" But, while we know music is a definite healer, we still must be prepared for the unexpected. Established in 2006 by the American Public Health Association (APHA), the goal of Get Ready Day is to arm individuals, families, and communities with knowledge that will help them cope with crises such as natural disasters, infectious diseases and pandemic illnesses.
Add some music to that please!
