Photo Moments with the 20th Annual BFG Magazine!
Mitch Woods is a character... and in that good way! He's a modern day boogie-woogie, jump blues and jazz pianist and singer. Woods calls his music, "rock-a-boogie," and with his backing band has retrospectively provided a 1940s and 1950s jump blues style.

Mitch Woods & His Rocket 88s have been torchbearers of the blues for decades. A regular Piano Bar host (Mitch Woods Club 88) on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruises, Woods, can sometimes be seen playing in his trademark fez hat and animal print silk pj's! Personable and talented... he's a spirit lifter!

His new album Revelation features legendary drummer Anton Fig. GA is $20 and Sacramento Blues Society (SBS) members $16.

Wednesday Oct 19 New York, Chicago, San Francisco guitar star, Steve Freund brings early Delta and Chicago lowdown blues to the Starlet. With NorCal blues all-stars Tyler Eng (drums), Mike Phillips (bass) and Sid Morris (piano) Guitarist, producer and bandleader Steve Freund, praised by Rolling Stone for his “masterful, no-nonsense guitar work.” Steve is considered one of the most consistently creative guitarists playing blues today. GA is $18 and SBS members $15.

Wednesday Oct 26, is Johnny Burgin who fell headfirst into the vibrant Chicago blues scene, gained a spot in Tail Dragger’s band and started gigging and recording with traditional blues veterans like Sam Lay, Billy Boy Arnold, and Pinetop Perkins. Johnny eventually was working regularly in Chicagoland blues clubs under his own name. “His guitar style is raw and rude and real – on the vocal side, a nice original style – he’s damn good!" says Elvin Bishop. GA is $16 and SBS members $14.
Nope, The Blues Don't Lie
For the follow up to his sixth Billboard #1 album, The Blues Is Alive And Well, Buddy reunited with his Grammy Award winning producer, songwriter and longtime collaborator Tom Hambridge, to bring us even more emotionally charged music with even more bone-chilling hard earned lyrics and lessons.

The Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award winner features guest appearances on this new LP from Mavis Staples, who guests on the forever timely and spellbinding “We Go Back.” He even partners with James Taylor on “Follow the Money,” a harmonious collaboration unmarred even by its focus on politics, sinister greed and more.

The Blues Don’t Lie is Buddy Guy’s follow up to his 2018 Billboard #1 Blues Album Chart lead The Blues Is Alive And Well, which debuted at #1, making it his thirteenth Top 10 Billboard Blues album. Always a welcomed return to music, he won “Best Blues Album” at the 2019 Grammy Awards. This all followed his 2015 album Born To Play Guitar, which also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Blues Album charts and won “Best Blues Album” at the 2016 Grammy Awards.

The recipient of the 2015 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Buddy Guy’s incredible career spans over 50 years with just as many albums released. Career highlights include 8 Grammy Awards, 38 Blues Music Awards, the most any artist has had, a Kennedy Center Honors, NARM Chairman’s Award for Sustained Creative Achievement, Billboard Music Awards' Century Award for distinguished artistic development, Presidential National Medal of Arts, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to name a few.

At 86 years young, Guy proves that it gets greater later as he continues to record and tour around the world with performances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater and more.

“There Was More to It Than Just Music”
Charlie Musselwhite Talks Blues
By Jim Beaugez/Guitar Player
The sight of blues-harp legend Charlie Musselwhite holding a Harmony acoustic guitar on the cover of his 2022 album, Mississippi Son (Alligator), isn’t as incongruous as you might think.

Chances are, if you’ve listened to any of his two-dozen-plus solo albums, you’ve already heard Musselwhite play guitar. But he wouldn’t be offended if you didn’t notice. After all, harmonica has been his calling card since the 1960s, when he was sitting in with Muddy Waters and other foundational blues artists on Chicago’s South Side.

But throughout his five-decade career in blues music, Musselwhite has snuck a bit of his own fretwork into the mix across most of his albums. On Mississippi Son, which pays tribute to the music and region that inspired him, he finally brings his guitar playing to the forefront on 14 country blues songs recorded in his adopted Mississippi Delta hometown of Clarksdale, where Son House, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and other blues greats played. ...continue reading
Psychedelic Blues: When The Blues Turned On And Tuned In
Jim Allen/ Discover Music
After psychedelia came to a boil in the late 60s, the blues and rock heroes of the 50s took a brief but thrilling walk on the wild side, with fuzz guitars, wah-wah effects, and epic jams to the fore. It was the Age of Aquarius, and the blues was busy being psychedelicized. The psychedelic blues period for Chicago titans like Muddy and Wolf and first-generation rock ’n rollers like Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard wasn’t a long one but it blasted a hole in preconceptions on either side of the stylistic fence. And the impact was as unforeseen as it was long-lasting.

Giving the greats their due

Baby boomer rockers and Chicago blues originators spent a good portion of the 60s doing a dizzying do-si-do together. By mid-decade, the UK and US rock stars who’d learned their lessons from the old-schoolers’ 50s recordings did their heroes a good turn by bringing the spotlight back to them. British Invasion covers of classics from the Chess and Sun catalogs rallied a new audience, leading to reissues and new releases from the bluesmen marketed to the younger crowd.

But by the late 60s, the countercultural explosion had pulled rock fans further from away the genre’s musical roots, so a few savvy souls decided to do something about it.

The train started rolling in the mind of Marshall Chess, son of Chess Records co-founder Leonard Chess. The label had taught the world to love Chicago blues, but by 1967, twentysomething Marshall reckoned his dad’s company had to catch up or get left behind. …continue reading

Just in Case: October 12th is "National Gumbo Day" and I immediately thought of how many songs I've heard that mention gumbo beeteen Blues and Cajon/Creole fare! I think the very first one for me was Dr. John's "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya" off his 1968 debut album Night Tripper. But now that I think of it, I probably heard it in Hank Williams' "Jambalaya."  I honestly don't recall when that might have been but I did love Brenda Lee who covered it as a youngster. But I definitely recall when I heard Dr. John, and I know he wasn't talking about food. Yep, cooking up something has a variety of meanings for sure. From "Alligator Gumbo" to "We Make Good Gumbo" (Tab Benoit) and so many more... it's all about fun and that tasty mish-mash of "ingredients."

In searching, I stumbled on an album called Dr. John Gumbo Blues which was released posthumously and has various artists like Sonny Landreth, Joe Louis Walker, Matt Schofield and King Solomon Hicks backing and adding new life to some 1974 vocal tracks of Dr. John's.
