Toronto’s Women's Blues Revue 2022 Nov 25th
(TORONTO, CANADA) - The Women's Blues Revue 2022 returns to the newly revitalized Massey Hall to celebrate its 35th year on Friday November 25. Bringing blues lovers together for an evening honoring the contributions to the genre with some of Canada's finest musicians.

This year's line-up includes Garnetta Cromwell, Miss Emily, Selena Evangeline, Suzie Vinnick, Ann Vriend and host Angelique Francis. All vocalists will be backed by the All-Star Women's Blues Revue Band. Showtime is 8pm.

Garnetta Cromwell is a bilingual, Afro-Metis (Mi'q Maw Community) Canadian girl. She fronts Garnetta & Dagroovmasters, a high-energy classic Soul R&B band that is also a reflection of Canada's multicultural society.

Miss Emily celebrated the Maple Blues Awards triple-crown of Female Vocalist, New Artist and Sapphire Blues Video of the Year in 2020. Her incomparable vocals are surpassed only by her electrifying, roof-rattling performances.

Selena Evangeline is a world-class singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. She’s a winner of an Ontario Independent Music Award for Best Urban, Barrie New Music Award as well as honorable mention in the John Lennon Song-Writing Competition.

This year's host, Angelique Francis is a multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist, multi-genre singer-songwriter and composer.

Suzie Vinnick is a 3x Juno Nominee, CFMA Award winner, and a 10-time winner of the Maple Blues Award for songwriting, female vocalist, acoustic act and more. The pure joy she exudes when she picks up that guitar is so worth the show.

Canadian, Ann Vriend, is a two-time Maple Blues Award songwriting winner, an Edmonton Music Award, and Alberta Centennial Award recipient. Her sound is reminiscent of the vintage, rootsy, soul style of Stax Records and Muscle Shoals.

This year's Women's Blues Revue Band includes: Rebecca Hennessy (Trumpet & Bandleader), Suzie Vinnick (Guitar), Emily Burgess (Guitar), Carrie Chesnutt (Sax), Elena Kapeleris (Sax), Colleen Allen (Sax), Dale Anne Brendon (Drums), Lily Sazz (Keys), Carlie Howell (Bass).

Tickets available now here or 416-872-4255. For priority ticket access, fans can become a Platinum Friends First member. Learn about options here.
Morgan Freeman makes surprise visit to his Biloxi club
By Mary Perez, Sun Herald
Many people at Ground Zero Blues Club in Biloxi Wednesday night didn’t even know co-owner Morgan Freeman was in the house until he came down the stairs and took the stage.

The unannounced visit was the first time the Academy Award actor from Mississippi experienced the club he helped bring to downtown Biloxi, although he did drop by several times while the building was being renovated to be similar to the original Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale.

“It was a really special night for the venue and the staff,” said Lee Young, a co-owner of the Biloxi Ground Zero and the developer of The District on Howard. Ground Zero is the first anchor business in the development that’s helping revitalize downtown Biloxi.

The staff had very little notice Freeman and the other owners of the Clarksdale Ground Zero would be in Biloxi Wednesday, Young said. For security purposes, he was seated upstairs on what is known as “the porch” that overlooks the stage and part of the restaurant below.

The idea was to let Freeman enjoy the experience without any special treatment or attention.

It wasn’t the “Morgan Special” on the menu that most impressed him but the wings he ordered. Young said Freeman told the chef the wings were some of the best he’s ever tasted. “He just had a really good time,” Young said.

Freeman, who posted on Facebook this week that he is glad to be back filming in Mississippi, added his autograph to the porch as all visitors to the venue are invited to do.

He listened to Dexter Allen sing the blues and then took the stage himself, Young said, welcoming those who came out on a Wednesday night for music, food and drink…Read more here
Hooker The Healer with Roy Rogers help
Out of print for more than a decade, an important, historical reissue on vinyl and CD of John Lee Hooker’s The Healer is slated to drop on October 28. Recorded at San Francisco’s Russian Hill Recording Studios, the album was produced by guitar maestro Roy Rogers, who served as a member of Hooker’s Coast to Coast Band. The album won the 1989 Grammy for the track "I'm In The Mood" with Bonnie Raitt (her 1st of 4 that night in 1990) and also marked a turning point in Hooker’s career.

The Healer features fantastic tracks with Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Charlie Musselwhite, Robert Cray, Canned Heat, George Thorogood, Los Lobos, and 3 rare tracks of John Lee Hooker solos.

Roy Rogers went on to produce three more for Hooker including the 1991 Grammy-nominated Mr. LuckyBoom Boom (1992); and 1995’s Chill Out (co-producing with Van Morrison). Chill Out also won a Grammy in 1995. The Healer went Gold in several countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, and the UK, and it was called by some a pivotal record for the blues genre.

Indiana’s Blues at the Crossroads comes to an end
(TERRE HAUTE IN) - A release posted Oct 26 by Blues at the Crossroads festival organizer Connie Wrin, sited poor attendance in the last two years combined with other factors, that has led to the decision to end the festival. While anticipation was high for the 2022 festival, which is held in Terre Haute, Indiana, bad weather then contributed to lower attendance numbers on top of it.

The 1st Blues at the Crossroads festival launched four days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, providing the community some music and an opportunity to donate to the American Red Cross amid a national crisis.

Twenty years later, Indiana's second-longest-running blues festival bounced back after a year off because of the pandemic. In its best years, Blues at the Crossroads has drawn up to 10,000 people and recognized as one of the premier Blues Festivals in the Midwest.

Wrin said that the rising costs of running the festival led to the need to raise ticket prices which also seemed to contribute to the lower attendance numbers. The final festival was able to raise $6,000 which was used to help purchase instruments for students participating in Vigo County Schools music programs.

Wrin thanked the community for years of support, and her family members for assisting in everything from creating ID badges for musicians to sweeping the streets the following morning.

“My lasting memories will be of the friends I have made and the stories others have shared with me,” she wrote. “It makes me smile when I think of the couples who met at the festival and are now married. My children have literally grown up with the festival being part of their lives.

Wrin also operates The Verve nightclub on Wabash Avenue, which were the base of operations for the festival.

John Nemeth :: MAY BE THE LAST TIME
"I recorded this album before my jaw amputation surgery, which took place in late May. It's called May Be The Last Time because I didn't know then and I still don't know, if I will ever sing or play again like I used to. I have to say the magic of this performance is beyond this world and maybe the greatest of my life." John Nemeth

Musicians are always among the first to respond in times of crisis and offer up aid and lend their time and talents to support a cause. When word got around that award-winning bluesman John Németh was facing surgery to treat a potentially career-ending and life-threatening illness, several of his old friends stepped up to help him record May Be The Last Time, before his operation.

Organized by vaunted guitarist Kid Andersen, who hosted the sessions at his Greaseland studios in California and brought in fellow West Coast musicians and living legends Elvin Bishop and his Big Fun Trio (Bob Welsh and Willy Jordan) with Alabama Mike joining in for good measure. For two days in May this year, they recorded old favorites and new tunes from Németh in a freewheeling jam session that resulted in eleven new tracks that capture the urgency and cathartic essence of the music and the brotherhood they share.

The tracks include everything from a traditional Gospel chorus to a swinging poignant social commentary from 1966, to Elvin Bishop leading the band through a swampy romp, to a soul classic, bump and grind, honky-tonk, and then finishing up with foot stomping, cockeyed optimism.

All proceeds from sales will go toward John's staggering medical bills and expenses.
