Photo Moments with the 20th Annual BFG Magazine!
|
Captured during autograph night on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise Nov 3rd, it was fun to see Curtis Salgado hamming it up (in my hat) when he was "checking out" the annual Blues Festival Guide magazine! HA!
The award-winning soulful, funky powerhouse vocalist, harpman, and songwriter, Salgado is a mesmerizing performer indeed. A major force in his own right for decades, I had fun filling my 2 blues cruiser "virgin" friends on Salgado's John Belushi/Blues Brothers connection since they weren't familiar with him.

Valerie June book signing Nov 19 at Delta Heritage Center
|
(BROWNSVILLE, TN) - Grammy-nominated musician, author and West Tennessee native Valerie June will sign copies of her newest book, Somebody to Love, Saturday, November 19 at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center (121 Sunny Hill Cove) in Brownsville. June will read excerpts beginning at 2 pm followed by the book signing. Books will be available for sale at this free event.
Somebody to Love: The Story of Valerie June's Sweet Little Baby Banjolele is a hardcover children’s book inspired by how June wrote the song "Somebody to Love," which is from her 2013 album release Pushin' Against A Stone.
In the book, a young aspiring musician is given a toy banjolele, a very unique four-stringed instrument with a body like a small banjo and a neck like a ukulele. At the beginning, the baby banjolele dreams that its voice will soar and be heard throughout the world, but soon its musical journey meets with challenges and doubts. The determined banjolele refuses to give up – finally finding the courage, and belief, and love it needs.
“This is a wonderful inspirational story,” says Center Director Sonia Outlaw-Clark, “we are so happy to host a signing event for Valerie and to have the book available in time for the holidays.”
Valerie June Hockett is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Humboldt, Tennessee. She’s been published in the New York Times, which has also hailed her as one of America’s “most intriguing, fully formed new talents.” She has recorded four critically acclaimed, best-selling solo albums and has also written songs for legendary artists such as Mavis Staples and The Blind Boys of Alabama. June has graced some of the world's most prestigious stages, from Carnegie Hall to the Kennedy Center, and is part of the Turnaround Arts program originally started by First Lady Michelle Obama.
For more information, contact the Center at 731-779-9000 or visit their website.

Legendary Fall Blues Fun Recap
|
Wow, what a blues-filled time we had on the high seas! The #37 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise sailed the Sea of Cortez Sat Oct 29-Sat Nov 5 and myself and your Blues Festival Guide magazine CEO/Publisher Kaati were both onboard along with so many blues loving friends and dozens of talented and energetic performers!
Things were hopping all over the ship day and night in between scenic stops at Cabo San Lucas, Loreto and La Paz. Music permeated from the Sea View Pool Aft stage, the Lido Midship stage, the World Stage, B.B. King's Blues Club, Rolling Stone Rock Room, Billboard Onboard (Club 88 piano bar), the Crow's Nest, and Chuk Barber' Soul Lounge after midnite in the Ocean Bar. The food court is always happening too, and the hosted 2-deck dining room, no-host bars and restaurants, and the spa, etc.
So much to do and see... there's the auction, "Decked Out Door" decor contest, and themed costume nights if you're into that (I sure am), Bluesin' Bazaar, autograph meet & greet nights, and Awards Party at the end of the cruise, etc.
Here's just a (thumbnail sz) sampling of a few photos captured (photos by Michele Lundeen except where noted). From Top Clockwise: Shemekia Copeland, Eric Gales (by Kaati), Bobby Rush and our good friend and dancin' queen Jeannette Anderson (by Steve Dixon), D'Mar, Laura Chavez, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Taj Mahal & The Phantom Blues Band, Mindi Abair (by Kaati), Deanna Bogart and Tommy Castro Band, World Stage fun (by Kaati), and Dylan Triplett. We'll be posting an album on the Blues Festival Guide Facebook page soon.
Honestly, too much to list, let alone all the entertainers names. You'll just have to sail the LRBC and experience it yourself. You'll be blown away... not overboard of course... just your blues-lovin' mind!
Onward...
Michele & Kaati

Tail Dragger takes the bitter with the sweet
|
Filmmaker Kevin Mukherji’s new documentary Tail Dragger tells the story of an 82-year-old blues singer who was a protégé of Howlin’ Wolf and whose career echoes the heyday of blues clubs on Chicago’s West and South Sides.
“I first met Tail Dragger almost 30 years ago,” Mukherji told an audience Saturday after the film premiered at Classic Cinemas Lake Theater in Oak Park [Chicago]. “I’ve been photographing his performances for 25 years.”
Tail Dragger, real name James Yancy Jones, represents one of the last direct links to an era when booze flowed freely and musicians nurtured late-night reverie that helped establish Chicago’s claim as one of the blues capitals of the world to belong.
“I’m still here above ground,” Jones told fans during a post-screening question-and-answer session.
I asked Jones how his music celebrates fun when so many associate the blues with sadness. “The blues makes me feel good,” he replied. “Blues is happy music. You have ups and downs. So life is. You take the bitter with the sweet.”
Tail Dragger tells the story of Jones visiting relatives from his native Arkansas in Chicago as a teenager in the 1950s. After serving in the US Army, he finally settled in the Windy City in 1966.
He worked days driving trucks and fixing cars, staying out until the wee hours learning to play the blues and singing. Live blues music was the best entertainment for people after a long day or week of work.
At its peak, it must have seemed like Chicago had a blues club on every corner. ... continue reading article by Ted Slowik/Daily Southtown

Sacramento Blues Society’s Holiday Gala Dec. 11 with Texas Blues Queen Angela Strehli
|
(SACRAMENTO, CA) - The Sacramento Blues Society presents Texas Blues Queen, Angela Strehli and her all-star band for their 2022 Holiday Membership Gala, Sunday Dec 11 at Harlow’s (2708 J St.). Strehli’s 8-piece band will feature Mighty Mike Schermer as her guitarist and musical director, bassist Timm Walker (Elvin Bishop) and drummer William Allums, Jr. (aka the tough rhythm section that holds down The Zydeco Flames), plus a 3-piece horn section. Doors 6pm and showtime 7-10pm.
This evening is also a record release party for Ace of Blues, Strehli’s first album in over 17 years, via Antone’s/New West Records. The 12-song set was co-produced by Strehli and husband Bob Brown.
For over five decades, her voice has coursed through the genre akin to blood through a heart. Her influence can be felt in the legacy of Antone’s — the iconic Austin blues club she helped found with the late Clifford Antone and where she performed and became friends with the likes of Muddy Waters, Albert King, Otis Rush, Jimmy Reed, and countless others. Ace of Blues pays tribute to the artists who’ve inspired her and features renditions of songs made famous by many of them. It concludes with “SRV,” a beautiful, personal, original tribute to the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.
No cover for current SBS card-carrying members or $30 General Admission tix, which include a one-year membership to the Sacramento Blues Society.
Renew your SBS membership, bring a friend to join. Enjoy cocktails, food, vote for new SBS Board members, buy raffle tickets. Dress up, dress down. Wear your boots! We are all in this together. Yes, there will be a dance floor!

Lil’ Red & The Rooster :: KEEP ON!
|
|
Lil’ Red’s approach to life and music: “mix what’s pissing you off with some bounce and swing, sprinkle a pinch of blue notes, and bend it all together on six strings for guaranteed feel-good satisfaction.”
Poised to pick the mantle as the coolest guitar slinging duo since Les Paul and Mary Ford ruled the airwaves, Lil’ Red & The Rooster are ready for international attention with their sophomore release Keep On! To aid them on this journey the duo of Lil’ Red (Jennifer Milligan) & The Rooster (Pascal Fouquet), who split time between the USA and Europe, recruited engineer Blaise Barton of JoyRide Studio along with Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith on drums and Felton Crews on bass, now their USA combo, to record the new album in Chicago. They also invited Grammy nominee, Billy Branch, to make a guest appearance on the title track and baritone saxophonist, Jean-Marc Labbé, appears on several tracks.
The ten new originals and one classic cover, a collection the duo describe as “Retro Modern Blues Sound,” comprise their second album and first since making the finals of the 2019 International Blues Challenge in Memphis and signing with Blue Heart Records. The sizzling album, although packed with hot licks and swinging numbers, isn’t all fun and games as the pair deliver messages on the power of love, freedom, and social consciousness.
This fine effort, Keep On!, from Lil’ Red & The Rooster, covers a lot of ground and will turn a lot of heads.

Just in Case: Nov 13, 2022 is "National Hug a Musician Day." It's not just fun and games... a lot of work goes into being a musician, and they/we literally share their souls with you!
It was great to be able to give a hug to prolific trumpet man extraordinaire Tom Poole on the recent Oct Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise (LRBC). I met Tom through mutual friend Johnny "V" Vernazza (Gold Record-winning Elvin Bishop alumni) when they both played on my CD, Song Inside Me several years back (Johnny V also co-produced), and what an honor it was all 'round.
Tom has played and recorded with countless well-known artists... too many to mention here. He's sailed and played on many of the LRBC's too, and this time his primary spot was with the Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra.
But whether well-known or not, give a musician a hug, or at the very least a fist bump, for bringing more life into your life!
