Winter Blues Weekend in Western New York Jan 20-22
|
(ELLICOTTVILLE, NY) - In the Western New York town of Ellicottville, the village will heat up this winter during Winter Blues Weekend, held January 20-22 at various venues and establishments in town. These hot spots will feature live and local blues artists on Friday and Saturday night, with more events planned during the long weekend, all free and open to the public.
Located in the heart of the Chautauqua-Allegheny Region, Ellicottville is located less than an hour northeast of Jamestown and less than an hour south of Buffalo. Presented by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, this high-energy, soulful celebration in the heart of the village will feature more than 15 regional acts. Ellicottville also offers eclectic shops, unique restaurants and two ski slopes all within walking distance.
The music kicks off Friday evening and continues through Sunday afternoon, allowing you to kick back and listen to amazingly talented musicians, perhaps after a day of skiing the local slopes.
“We want to make sure that everyone who comes to Ellicottville can enjoy these live performances at no cost,” said Wallace. “Many restaurants start their entertainment schedules in the afternoon, giving families with young children a chance to plan a fun, musically-inspired lunch or dinner out and take part in all the excitement.”

The Unlikely Success of Son House’s Father Of Folk Blues
|
By the middle of the 1960s, the so-called “blues revival” was in full swing, with white audiences “discovering” the music of Black blues artists. As part of this process, some artists who had stopped performing and recording long before, such as Mississippi John Hurt and Skip James, were “rediscovered” and brought back onto stages and into studios. Their recording careers had stopped abruptly after the blues boom of the 1920s, as the Great Depression erased the market for blues records practically overnight. By the time recording resumed in earnest, following the musicians’ strike of 1942-1944, many more Blacks had moved North to big cities, and their tastes had shifted mainly away from country blues.
Robert Johnson and Charley Patton, two essential Delta blues standard-bearers, passed away in the 1930s. Still, young white blues fans wondered about the whereabouts of another singer at the epicenter of the genre in its early years. Patton mentored this man, inspiring not just Johnson but also Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and countless others. These fans knew of Eddie “Son” House, Jr. only through his few recordings from the past: four exceedingly rare Paramount 78s from 1930 and 18 Library of Congress field recordings from 1941 and 1942.
Three young, white blues fans – Phil Spiro, Dick Waterman, and Nick Perls – went looking for House in Memphis and Mississippi during the summer of 1964. It was hardly a safe endeavor to undertake at that time. When they were in Mississippi, the Ku Klux Klan murdered two other young, Northern whites and their Black friend, civil rights activists working to register Black voters. On that day, Spiro, Waterman, and Perls first spoke to House, but only over the phone, since he was living neither in Mississippi nor Memphis but in Rochester, New York. Two days later, on 23 June 1964, they arrived in Rochester and met House for the first time face-to-face.

Dave Keyes :: RHYTHM BLUES & BOOGIE
|
|
Often overshadowed by electric guitar, the piano has played a significant role in the development of modern blues, R&B, and rock‘n’roll. Born with the perfect name, New Yorker Dave Keyes has spent his life pushing the keyboards into the limelight and carrying the torch of his heroes-Fats Domino, Dr. John, Johnny Johnson, and Professor Longhair, to name just a few. This mission has earned him three Blues Music Award nominations and landed him gigs on Broadway, in television and work on the road with big name acts and his own touring band.
For his sixth album, Rhythm Blues & Boogie, Keyes dug deeper into the roots of his passion on nine original tracks and one special cover that spell out his musical influences.
Keyes invited special guests for sessions recorded in New York, New Jersey, and Memphis, including the legendary drummer Bernard Purdie, the much-loved Doug MacLeod, guitar ace Early Times and the irascible Popa Chubby. They are joined by members of his NYC crew, guitarist John Putnam and drummer Frank Pagano with Jeff Anderson on bass and the horn section of Chris Eminizer on sax and trumpeter Tim Ouimette, who spent years with Keyes in the pit orchestra of the Grammy-winning Broadway show, Smokey Joe’s Café.
Rhythm Blues & Boogie is proof positive that good things happen when you gather friends and family for a project and Dave Keyes has every right to wear those honors with pride.

Just In Case... plus Holidays & Birthdays
|
• Jan 16 Martin Luther King Jr. Day
• Jan 22 Chinese New Year
Birthdays upcoming of note:
Jan 12-Ruth Brown (1928-2006), Mississippi Fred McDowell (1904-1972), Long John Baldry (1941-2005); Jan 13-David "Kid" Ramos (1959); Jan 14-Allen Toussaint (1938-2015), Clarence Carter (1936); Jan 15-Earl Hooker (1929-1970), Martin Luther King, Jr (1929-1968), Queen Ida (1929); Jan 16-Barbara Lynn (1942), Lester Davenport (1932-2009), Robert Wilkins (1896-1987); Jan 17-Paul Rishell (1950), Mick Taylor (1949), EG Kight (1966); Jan 19-Henry Gray (1925), Janis Joplin (1943-1970), Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (1936-2011), Christone "Kingfish" Ingram (1999); Jan 20-Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter (1888-1949), Luther Tucker (1936-1993); Jan 21-Snooks Eaglin (1936-2009), Richie Havens (1941-2013), B'nois King (1943), Wolfman Jack (1938-1995 DJ extraordinaire), Zora Young (1948); Jan 22-Hammie Nixon (1908-1984), Sam Cooke (1935-1964), “Blind” Willie Johnson (1897-1945), Teeny Tucker (1958)
Just in Case: January 20 is "National DJ Day" and stems from the work of one jock: Alan Freed, whom one might know as "Moondog." This 1950s DJ promoted African-American rhythm and blues music on the radio. Some say he coined the term ‘rock and roll,’ and if not, he certainly helped popularize and redefine what it is. Alan Freed passed on Jan 20, 1965.
Of course we love live music but what about the radio and DJ's turning us on to not only our favorites, but new artists to discover. This, in turn, might cause us to attend a live concert and/or purchase an artist's recording. It's a win-win.
From wedding and party DJ's playing your favorite jams, to the radio personalities who help you get through the morning commute or your workday or your late nite. Recording greats B. B. King and Rufus Thomas worked as disc jockeys on WDIA out of Memphis. Wolfman Jack sure made an impression on us. Artist Big LLou Johnson is the deep voice of B.B. King's Bluesville in SiriusXM these days. The list is long. Who is or was your favorite DJ?
