Marley family and friends bid farewell to Jo Mersa
|
In this videograb, reggae singer Stephen Marley (left) is seen among family members after the funeral procession of his late son Jo Mersa made a brief stop in Trench Town.
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The family of Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley bid farewell to the late reggae singer on Tuesday.
Marley, the first born of reggae singer/producer Stephen Marley and grandson of the genre’s icon Bob Marley, was laid to rest in Nine Miles, St Ann after a thanksgiving service at the Bob Marley Museum in St Andrew and a funeral procession stop in Trench Town, the birthplace of reggae and hometown of his legendary grandfather.
Jo Mersa died on December 27 in Miami-Dade County of a suspected asthma attack. He was 31.
Reports are that officers from the Pinecrest Police Department in Florida found Marley unconscious inside his vehicle at a shopping centre's parking lot. Paramedics at the scene later pronounced him dead. No foul play was suspected.
Jo Mersa — whose mom is Kerry-Ann Smith, younger sister of former Dancehall Queen Carlene Smith — was known for songs such as Burn it Down, Made It, and No Way Out.
He leaves behind his father and mother, wife Qiara, six-year-old daughter Sunshine and 12 siblings.
The Bob Marley Museum was closed to the public on Tuesday and will reopen on Wednesday.

Los Angeles - The Marley Family & Terrapin Station Entertainment have announced the U.S. debut of the official Bob Marley One Love Experience.
|
The acclaimed experiential adventure kicks off with a special VIP event and an exclusive performance by Bob Marley’s grandson, Skip Marley, along with newly signed Universal Canada/Tuff Gong Collective recording artist King Cruff, at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles on January 26, 2023.
The famed musician’s extraordinary life is shared through several interactive sections that reside in the 15,000-square-foot One Love curated space. Experiences include the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Bob Marley Archive,” a collection of previously unseen photographs, rare memorabilia and various other surprises such as the world’s largest indoor vinyl record celebrating Legend, the 1984 compilation album by Bob Marley and the Wailers.
A curated playlist of Marley’s music can be heard via headphones in the “Soul Shakedown” studio, creating a silent dance party for all who enter. It’s an exclusive ticket backstage in the “Next Gen Zone,” which celebrates the Marley family, legacy, philanthropy and influence. The exhibition also features the work of acclaimed street artists such as Mr. Brainwash, The Postman, Camoworks and Idiotbox—shining a spotlight on Marley’s influence on the art form. One trippy section of the experience is the “One Love Forest,” a multi-sensory recreation of Marley’s homeland, Jamaica, complete with a cannabis garden and a giant marijuana joint.
The Bob Marley One Love Experience first launched in London at the famed Saatchi Gallery in February 2022. Following an acclaimed and highly successful ten-week U.K. stint, it spent 16 weeks at Lighthouse Immersive Artspace in Toronto, Canada.
Guided tours of One Love start at 4:20 p.m. on weekends, and there will be additional special events at the experience to celebrate Bob Marley’s birthday on February 6.
Tickets for The Bob Marley One Love Experience are available at www.bobmarleyexp.com.

Sacramento, CA - GYPTIAN - Saturday January 28 - THE RINK Studios
|
HASO Live presents roots reggae singer/songwriter Gyptian live in concert on Saturday, January 28, 2023. The concert is at the unique Rink Studios at 1031 Del Paso Blvd in Sacramento. The doors are at 8pm and the music starts at 10pm. This evening of reggae will start with DJ Fiji and Selector Stakweeds. This is a 21 and over show.
This venue is Sacramento’s newest state-of-the-art music venue with amazing live streaming capabilities, and excellent acoustics.
Like every great artist, Gyptian has layers and multiple facets to his artistry. There’s the conscious reggae singer who listeners first came to know on his breakthrough 2005 hit “Serious Times,” then there’s the champion lover who captivated females worldwide with his crooning on “Hold You,” the sultry island pop smash that topped charts globally in 2010. The song even caught the attention of rap superstar Nicki Minaj, who jumped on the remix.
Gyptian is musically diverse and takes the listener from dancehall to soca to global pop sounds.
Born Windel Beneto Edwards in rural St. Andrew, Jamaica, north of Kingston, Gyptian grew up singing in church with his Adventist mom by day, and at dancehall sessions organized by his Rastafarian father by night. “I didn’t grow up in a way where I’m limited,” Gyptian says. “It’s all about two things at the table, take whichever you want.”
The singer’s unique style of tying his shirt around his head and twisting his chin hair earned him the nickname Egyptian like an Egyptian Pharoah.
His single “Serious Times,” would instantly put him at the forefront of the ‘roots revival’ that was taking over Jamaican music when it was released. No fluke, a second hit, “Beautiful Lady,” followed shortly thereafter, as did a third, the heartfelt “Mama.” A debut album, MY NAME IS GYPTIAN, landed in 2006, earning him comparisons to the great Gregory Isaacs for its mixture of conscious reggae and sultry lover’s rock.
That year saw Gyptian take home the “Most Promising Entertainer” title at the 2006 International Reggae and World Music Awards in New York City, an honor he has certainly lived up to in the years since.
HASO Live produces the annual One Love One Heart Reggae Festival in Sacramento region each summer as well as other events throughout the area.
$50 tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite. VIP tickets also available which include table service and a bottle of Hennessey.

|
The new year is here! It’s a time to reflect on our accomplishments, set goals for the future, and start fresh.
After all, what better way to start off the new year than by setting your sights on positivity, growth, and abundance?
I’ve found that making affirmations are one of the most effective ways to help keep me motivated in my daily life.
You can start slowly by spending only 5 minutes per day, and as you become more comfortable or want to reap the benefits of positive affirmations, you can up your time commitment.
Here is how to practice your affirmations: • Start with a few deep breaths to calm your mind and body. • Repeat each affirmation at least 2 to 3 times. • Allow yourself to feel the positive energy of these affirmations. • Repeat this process until you make it a daily habit.
The most important aspect of effective affirmations is to believe what you say to yourself. So, choose a few positive affirmations that resonate with you the most and repeat them often.
Without further ado, here are 60 new year affirmations for a successful 2023!
