Photo Moments with the 20th Annual BFG Magazine!
|
Here's singer, guitarist, songwriter Jackie Venson who is being called "an Austin legend in the making!" Along with her guitar prowess, and unique and poignant vocal and lyrical delivery, Jackie also is adept at keyboards.
Even though she has been at it for a decade, Jackie is still a bit of a rising star on many levels, especially since the pandemic lifted, thanks to her passion and persistance to grow and express herself. Her star is only getting bigger and we were pleased to discover her on the Oct Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. Jackie's not afraid to speak her mind via her blues-alt rock music which Guitar World calls, "a sonic smorgasbord."

Various Artists :: BLUE LAS VEGAS, VOLUME ONE
|
|
Blue Las Vegas, Volume One is a collection of the very best Blues music made in Sin City and is now available from CD Baby and Amazon. The Las Vegas Blues Society (LVBS) offered their prestigious name, their expertise, and their inspiration to the project.
The LVBS partnered with Dan Harrell, a lifelong Blues supporter and LVBS award recipient, to make this recording that features the stars of the Las Vegas Blues scene. “This album’s primary purpose is to highlight local Las Vegas Blues heroes and to put a spotlight on the Las Vegas Blues scene for those around the country and the world to know and hear, says Harrell who is executive producer and project manager. "In addition, it will document a moment in time for Las Vegas Blues and permanently honor and memorialize beloved performers of the genre who are based here.”
The jam-packed album has 10 acts, 20 songs, and nearly 80 minutes of music, featuring well-known performers like Leon Blue, Billy Ray Charles, Junior Brantley, Al Ek, and Jimmy Carpenter, as well as less nationally known but extremely gifted players and singers.
LVBS president Jimmy Carpenter, the multiple award-winning singer, composer, and sax player, offered his extensive recording knowledge as creative consultant. Assistant producer LVBS board member Stella Ponce, served as liaison to the LVBS and provided help and guidance in a variety of important ways.
Blue Las Vegas, Volume One may just be some of the best Blues you’ve heard lately – from some of the best players and singers in the world, not just Las Vegas.

Esther Phillips, Josh White, John Primer & more to Be Inducted into Blues Hall of Fame
|
(MEMPHIS, TN) - R&B and blues singer Esther Phillips is among the 2023 inductees into The Blues Foundation’s Blues Hall of Fame (HOF).
Phillips had two top 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 for “Release Me” (1962, when she was known as “Little Esther” Phillips) and a remake of Dinah Washington’s “What a Diff’rence a Day Makes” (1975).
Josh White, who went from being a Piedmont blues artist to an important voice in the folk music world of the 1940s, was also inducted. This year’s other Blues Hall of Fame honorees also include four Chicago bluesmen, Carey Bell, John Primer, Snooky Pryor and Fenton Robinson, and the Mississippi juke joint king, Junior Kimbrough.
Of the seven artists being inducted this year, four (Bell, Phillips, Primer and Robinson) had been nominated for Grammy awards. Phillips was a four-time nominee for best R&B vocal performance, female. Of the seven artists, only Primer is still living. He is 78.
David Evans, who won the HOF award for "Individuals," is a two-time Grammy winner for best album notes. He won for Voices of Mississippi: Artists and Musicians Documented By William Ferris and Screamin’ and Hollerin’ the Blues – The Worlds of Charley Patton.
One of the five recordings being honored has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. That’s Son House’s 1930 recording “My Black Mama,” which was voted into the Grammy HOF in 2013.
Little Walter: The Complete Chess Masters is 2023’s "Classic Blues Recording Album." Hip-O’s five-CD, 126-track compilation was released in 2009.
Entering the Blues Hall of Fame as a "Classic of Blues Literature" is The Original Blues: The Emergence of the Blues in African American Vaudeville 1899-1926. The book, by Lynn Abbott and Doug Seroff, chronicles the minstrel and ragtime traditions in vaudeville theatre that was major public venue for blues in its early years.

Mississippi is home of the blues and key to civil rights past. Locals tell the story
|
With pandemic restrictions lifted, tourists are returning to Mississippi's famous Blues Trail. Civil rights leaders are noticing some are now hungry for more context about the music's origins.
CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Bluesman Robert Johnson played the guitar with such genius that legend has it his talent was a gift from the devil in exchange for the musician's soul. That deal was done, according to lore, at "the crossroads" in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
That exact crossroads, of U.S. Highways 61 and 49, is about an hour's drive south of Memphis in the huge, pancake-flat Mississippi Delta. It's the largely rural region in the northwest corner of the state that runs along the Mississippi River. Walk down John Lee Hooker Lane in Clarksdale and visitors can admire the markers honoring the famous musicians who got their start here — from Johnson to Muddy Waters to Howlin' Wolf.
Now new local artists like Christone "Kingfish" Ingram are carrying on the tradition. And you can catch live music just about any night of the week at authentic juke joints such as Red's and the Ground Zero Blues Club.
Clarksdale has gone all in on blues tourism as a way of helping this long-struggling region's economy. And it's proven to be a business driver. In Coahoma County, home to Clarksdale, tourists spent more than $68 million in 2019, according to a state tourism report.
"Even though they're coming here for the blues, people are spending money everywhere," says Tameal Edwards, Ground Zero's booking manager. The Mississippi Delta is world famous as the home of the blues. But less publicized is the fact that the region is also integral to America's civil rights story. Now some are hoping to tell both stories in a fuller way. …Continue this insightful story by Kirk Siegler/Debbie Elliott/National NPR

Just In Case... plus Holidays & Birthdays
|
• March is "Women's History Month"
• International Ideas Month
• National Music in Schools Month
• Mar 17 St. Patrick's Day
"May your glass always be full. May the roof over your head be always strong. And may you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead."
Birthdays upcoming of note:
Mar 16 James "Yank" Rachell (1910-1997); Mar 17 Nat "King" Cole (1917-1965); Mar 18 Wilson Pickett (1941-2006), Big Daddy Kinsey (1927-2001); Mar 19 Clarence "Frogman" Henry (1937), Jackie "Moms" Mabley (1894-1975); Mar 20 Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973), Frank Edwards (1909-2002), Marcia Ball (1949), Sam Lay (1935-2022), Eddie Shaw (1937-2018), Jimmie Vaughan (1951); Mar 21 William Clarke (1951-1996), Eddie James "Son" House, Jr. (1902-1988), Otis Spann (1930-1970), Gaye Adegbalola (1944); Mar 22-Weldon "Juke Boy" Bonner (1932-1978), Leo "Bud" Welch (1932-2017); Mar 23-Stick McGhee (1918), Chaka Khan (1953), Iverson "Louisiana Red" Minter (1932-2012); Mar 24 Frank "Scrap Iron" Robinson Jr. (1951-2020)
Just in Case: Mar 19 is "National Poultry Day." Well, of course I automaticaly started thinking of blues songs or lyrics that refer to "poultry." The one lyric that first crossed my mind was an Etta James mashup with her growling, "mama cooked a chicken, she thought it was a duck, put it on the table with its legs cocked up."
Now those similar lyrics and/or parts of it, have been used and modified in dozens of songs under different song titles, but the full-on original, according my research anyway, is a song called "The Duck Yas-Yas-Yas" originally recorded in St. Louis by pianist James "Stump" Johnson in the late 1920s. In 1939, Tommy McClennan used some of the lyrics in his song "Bottle It Up and Go," later recorded by John Lee Hooker. Among others, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion quoted the first three lines of the wild song "Chicken Dog," on their album Now I Got Worry, sung by Rufus Thomas. Whoa!
Ah, but then there's the standard blues tune "Chicken Shack," written and recorded first by Jimmy Smith in 1960. The Dominoes recorded a bluesy, swinging song called "Chicken Blues" in 1951..."If you don't like chicken then leave that hen alone." There's Little Feat's "Dixie Chicken;" Rufus Thomas' "Do The Funky Chicken;" Louis Jordon's "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens;" The Meters' funky, "Chicken Strut;" Amos Milburn's "Chicken Shack Boogie;" And Mississippi John Hurt's short little ditty, simply called "Chicken."
Yep, as usual, I'd could go on!!

Why March is Women's History Month? Well, why not?!
|
What's cookin? Well, undoubtably a woman somewhere and not just in the kitchen! Yeah baby!
Go checkout the fabulous blues women in your community! I bet you'll find that there's much more than what meets the eye.
There's passion, sadness, life-experience, fire, revenge, humor. Sure, you can say that about many male artists... but we're not talking about them now are we! HA! Okay, just a little sass there, settle down.
But seriously, women bring a different angst as well as wry wit to the blues picture. You can't tell me that some of these women don't literally bring you to your knees. It's not always an easy road for a women in the biz either so there's also fortitude involved, too.
Celebrate the women of the world! And while you're at it, hug your mama, sister, daughter, gramma, aunt, wife, girlfriend, baby mama ...you get the picture!
