Juke Joint Festival 20th Celebration Thurs-Sun April 13-16
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - 20 years ago, Clarksdale, Mississippi's old downtown felt very quiet and empty. A monument to a storied past. One event helped change all that… the Juke Joint Festival. This April, the world will descend on a downtown filled with old friends and new businesses, small-town hospitality and the biggest Juke Joint Festival yet. Juke Joint Festival is Saturday, April 15th, with related events held Thursday through Sunday.

Clarksdale's massive 20th Juke Joint Festival celebration officially starts with a Thursday 5pm-8pm Kick-off inside the alternatively-renovated New Roxy theater (described as "quite possibly the coolest venue in the South") with free performances by Sean "Bad" Apple and Lucious Spiller Band.

Friday, following a day of intimate music performances and panel discussions downtown and a parade, the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area presents a free, special festival edition of the world-famous Thacker Mountain Radio Hour at the New Roxy from 6pm-7pm.

Starting 10am Saturday, April 15th, enjoy 80 acts on 17 music stages spread over 8 blocks, arts and crafts vendors, Southern street food, and more—including racing pigs, a petting zoo and monkeys riding dogs. The daytime music stages are all free.

Saturday's nighttime music venues will feature 30+ acts at 26 venues and require an official Juke Joint Festival wristband. Quantities are limited and all sales final. Buy online or at the official festival headquarters for merchandise sales and wristband information is at 243 Delta Avenue, downtown. Lineup subject to change.

Sunday keeps the celebration rolling with related events such as the Cat Head Mini Blues Fest, Bluesberry Backyard Blues Fest, Red's Post-JJF Blues Jam and more.

Official Juke Joint Festival lineups, schedules, pre-sale wristbands and general information here.

“Night Train” Soulsville Foundation’s Gala April 29
(MEMPHIS, TN) - Fashioned to replace their beloved Staxtacular event, the inaugural “Night Train” on April 29 is now the Soulsville Foundation's largest fundraiser of the year. It’s a lavish party reminiscent of the days when the main means of travel was by rail, with Pullman Porters taking Black Americans from South to North and coast to coast and from one corner of the country to the next.

A celebration of African American music and culture, “Night Train” will feature the Stax Museum filled with live music, a silent auction, fantastic cuisine, cocktails, dancing, DJs, and more, all in their newly renovated lobby, gift shop, mid-century modern lounge, Studio A, Isaac Hayes' gold-trimmed Cadillac exhibit, and more.

“We are going to have as many Stax artists as possible at this gala,” said Soulsville President & CEO Pat Mitchell Worley. The gala event will be held at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, 926 E. McLemore Ave, Memphis, Tennessee and begins at 7pm. Tickets are $200 per person.

Venus Williams helps preserve home of Blues icon Nina Simone
International tennis legend Venus Williams has stepped in to help preserve the childhood home of another Black icon, famous Blues singer and civil rights activist, Nina Simone.

Williams teamed up with artist Adam Pendleton for an in-person auction event at Pace Gallery New York on May 20, that will be supported by world-renowned auctioneers online. The event marks the largest preservation effort dedicated to an African-American historic site, Yahoo reported. Nina Simone grew up in Tryon, North Carolina.

“Each of the artists Adam and I have selected for the auction has a unique, powerful voice, and we’ve been moved by their generosity and enthusiasm for this important cause,” Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam winner, said.

As one of the greatest artists of her time, Nina Simone left a legacy spanning four decades by the time she passed away on April 21, 2003, according to a biography. Beginning with her 1959 classic hit, “I loves You Porgy,” to her 1979 Black empowerment song “Young, Gifted and Black,” Simone captured generations of people who were inspired to love their Black skin.

The African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, lead the Nina Simone Childhood Home preservation project.

“Nina Simone is one of the most important musical artists of the 20th century. I’m inspired to be able to protect her legacy by preserving her childhood home. Her music, her vision, cannot be forgotten,” Adam Pendleton said.

Pendleton and other artists purchased the Nina Simone childhood home in 2017 to restore and preserve it. The full exhibition will remain on display from May 12 through May 20.

Online bidding in the auction for Nina Simone opens to the public at 11:00 a.m. ET on May 12 until 3 p.m. ET on May 22.

Cedric Burnside: The Guardian of Hill Country Blues
On Sunday nights in the nineties, locals from northern Mississippi’s hills and hollers, and sometimes a handful of adventurous tourists, gathered at Junior’s, an hour’s drive from Memphis in one of the South’s most unforgivingly rural landscapes. Inside, the revelers sipped moonshine from glass jars and danced as trancelike jams led by the now-legendary bluesmen Junior Kimbrough and R. L. Burnside stretched into the early morning hours.

Forty-four-year-old Cedric Burnside, a grandson of R. L.’s and now a Grammy-winning artist, grew up in this world. “By age ten, I was [playing] at the juke joint,” he says, “and I was about thirteen years old when I joined [R. L.’s] band full-time.”

While he’s known today for his own interpretations of the Hill Country blues style his grandfather helped create, at the time Cedric played drums behind R. L., providing the rhythmic foundation for excursions on regional standards like “Goin’ Down South,” “Shake ’Em On Down,” and “Poor Black Mattie.” But he also kept a close watch on what his “big daddy” was doing on guitar and how he communicated with his audience—lessons Cedric bookmarked for the music he began making after R. L.’s passing in 2005.

Why March is Women's History Month? Well, why not?!
What's cookin? Well, undoubtably a woman somewhere and not just in the kitchen! Yeah baby!

Go checkout the fabulous blues women in your community! I bet you'll find that there's much more than what meets the eye.

There's passion, sadness, life-experience, fire, revenge, humor. Sure, you can say that about many male artists... but we're not talking about them now are we! HA! Okay, just a little sass there, settle down.

But seriously, women bring a different angst as well as wry wit to the blues picture. You can't tell me that some of these women don't literally bring you to your knees. It's not always an easy road for a women in the biz either so there's also fortitude involved, too.

Celebrate the women of the world! And while you're at it, hug your mama, sister, daughter, gramma, aunt, wife, girlfriend, baby mama ...you get the picture!
