Are you missing us at times?
|
Hi blues peeps...
Sometimes your weekly e-Guide newsletter may arrive a little late due to us, but some do end up soft bounces (ones that are temporarily undeliverable) after we publish ontime. We do then send to the soft bounces addresses after the first initial sent batch has completed, but some may still end up as soft bounces.
*As a friendly reminder, and to hopefully help this situation, please remember to set up your spam filters to allow mail from the info@BluesFestivalGuide.com and eguide+bluesfestivalguide.com@mnb.email to ensure delivery.
We hate it when you don't get your newsletter that often includes time-sensitive events we know you might not want to miss plus special interest bluesy content.
Here's to a peaceful, music-filled week ahead. Hope the weather calms down some, too! Whew!
Yours in the blues,
Team BFG

Muddy Waters guitar sculpture that disappeared in Rolling Fork tornado is found
|
(ROLLING FORK, MS) - Legendary blues artist Muddy Waters claimed Rolling Fork as his birthplace, and the Mississippi Delta town embraced him as one of their own.
On Friday, Waters' hometown was decimated by an EF-4 tornado that claimed 21 lives in Mississippi, including 13 in Sharkey County.
Along with the devastation came another loss: memorabilia honoring the Rolling Fork bluesman.
A commemorative guitar sculpture honoring Waters that had been installed outside the county courthouse in Rolling Fork was blown out of its casing during the tornado Friday. The frame lay battered on the ground next to where the guitar once stood.
But the mystery of the missing guitar was solved rather quickly.

Exploring the Roots and Resilience of the Piedmont Blues
|
Current Piedmont blues artists speak to how the music that built Music Maker Foundation almost 30 years ago lives on.
Almost 30 years ago, Music Maker Executive Director Tim Duffy set out on a mission to find Guitar Gabriel. Gabe was a Piedmont bluesman who’d gone missing from the music scene decades prior. When Tim asked around for his whereabouts, people speculated he was dead. After about six months of searching in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, however, Tim met Guitar Gabriel in a drink house on the east side of town. The two became fast friends and business partners. When Tim asked around for his whereabouts, people speculated he was dead. After about six months of searching in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, however, Tim met Guitar Gabriel in a drink house on the east side of town. The two became fast friends and business partners.
Through Gabe, Tim encountered a remarkable group of Piedmont blues musicians living in this city built by tobacco; Macavine Hayes, Captain Luke, Willa Mae Buckner, and Whistlin’ Britches. These people and their music became the foundation of Music Maker.

Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers :: HOW MANY ROADS?
|
|
How Many Roads? is Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers’ 8th original album. New York City’s legendary late night house band Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers blazed a trail as they ignited Brooklyn and lower Manhattan’s rock, blues and burlesque revival with a skillful blend of tortured soul, poetic prose and Lex Grey’s powerful jaw dropping vocal delivery. The soul of The Urban Pioneers is Lex whose onstage flamboyance is only matched by her 24K gold voice... she's been coined the Madame of Modern Blues.
The journey continues for this ever-morphing touring band who fearlessly weaves genres together with a gritty thread of blues. How Many Roads? is a diverse collection of personal reflection and wild journeys, ultimately delivering an uplifting listening adventure.
The band combines an eclectic mix of award-winning recording artists, modern instrument innovators, local legends and rock recording veterans. Front woman, songwriter and guitarist Lex Grey’s vocal stylings have been compared to classic blues-soul artists such as Etta James, Robert Plant, Janis Joplin, and Amy Winehouse (and similarities to contemporary Alabama Shakes front woman Brittney Howard on her track "In It Together"), and her songwriting compared to Tom Waits, but this multiple ASCAP Award-winning songwriter has a style all her own. Lex Grey was inducted into the New York State Blues Hall of Fame as a “Master Rock and Blues Artist.”
"Dipping into the belly of the blues, this passionate, innovative performer blazes a primal fire. Both soulful and psychedelic, Lex’s voice reaches into cosmic unconsciousness.” – Keith Greenberg, NY Newsday

Blues trombonists that come to mind are Ed Earley, a long time member of the Elvin Bishop Band who has played with just about everybody in the blues world from Albert King to John Lee Hooker; Trombone Shorty who started touring with his own band at age 23; Suavo Jones of the Ghost Town Blues Band; Barnabus Jones fonding member of Tuba Skinny; "Iron" Mike Bogart of Tower of Power; Roger Goslyn, Fayyaz Virji and Winston Rollins of Jools Holland's Rhythm & Blues Band; and the great Jack Teagarden who was coined "King of the Blues Trombone"...for early, old school, jazzy blues. Have any more you'd like to add?
