Starting with a three-day institute with Polly Bath, NCES launched a multi-year project this spring with 13 school-based teams to build or refresh their Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Behavior. Polly will visit each school six times over the course of the next year to work with teams, providing professional development and other supports.

Join the New Hampshire Department of Education and 321 Insight for the last round of their in-person professional development series for New Hampshire educators.
These FREE, highly interactive workshops provide a deeper dive into understanding trauma-informed practices and how to create trauma-informed classrooms, and classroom-proven strategies to proactively address challenging behavior to support all students. This series is supported by Title II, Part A funding.

In partnership with UNH Extension, New Hampshire Healthy Lives (NH Division of Public Health Services, Arthritis Program) invites you to participate in this 6-week walking program geared towards any individual who seeks to increase their physical activity gradually and safely to decrease pain and discomfort.
While Walk with Ease was created to support people with arthritis, you do not have to have arthritis to enjoy the benefits of this program. Walk with Ease encourages participants to walk 3 times a week at their own pace.

Schoolyard SITES (Schoolyard Science Investigations by Teachers, Extension Volunteers, and Students) is a UNH professional development program for K-5 teachers. With support from Cooperative Extension science volunteers, teachers develop science investigations that incorporate student learning goals aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and involve established citizen science projects. Each teacher-volunteer team designs and teaches a science project that is relevant to the school district’s curriculum and school site. Schoolyard SITES students engage in real-world, problem-based learning and investigate their schoolyard using the scientific process, and they contribute valuable data to citizen science initiatives.

AMC's Coos County Youth Summer Trips
|
Each program will meet at either AMC's Pinkham Notch Visitor Center or AMC's Highland Center at Crawford Notch (location information is provided upon registration). Drop off for most trips is 9:00am on the first day with pick up is at 3:00pm on the last day.
Stated fees include guiding/education by AMC staff, all food while on course, gear rentals, and transportation to trailheads.
Scholarships (full or partial) are available for all trips. There can sometimes be flexibly regarding age ranges or other accommodations with advance notice. Place-based Learning Opportunity
|
The NASA-funded project Place-Based Learning to Advance Connections, Education, and Stewardship (PLACES) is seeking formal and informal educators who teach Earth Systems topics to youth in grades 6-12 to participate in professional learning and research activities. The program is designed to engage teachers in data-rich Earth Systems learning through the integration of NASA data sets, images, and resources with instructional activities and lessons. Educators will receive a $1250 stipend for attending an in-person workshop in Tucson, Arizona from July 11-13, 2023 and 4 virtual sessions through March 2024. Fill out an application.

NASA Webinars for K-12 Rural Educators
|
Join hosts Dr. Rachael Arens, Associate Researcher at NAU PLANETS & Luke Henke, Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow at NASA on Thursday, May 4th at 7pm CT/ 8pm ET as they welcome astronomers Dr. Marc Buie and Dr. John Keller who will discuss the science of occultations and how this work is supporting the NASA Lucy mission. They will also introduce the unique citizen science network known as RECON (the Research and Education Collaborative Occultation Network) that involves rural high schools studying outer solar system objects through occultations. The NASA SciAct project titled “Science Through Shadows” will include flat screen and full dome videos on the science of eclipses, occultations, and transits for use in classrooms, libraries, and planetariums around the country.

Chess in Education ~ Granite Gambit
|
Granite Gambit is statewide program in New Hampshire supports training for teacher-driven chess initiatives that connect chess with core academic content, helping to build student engagement. NHDOE is funding the program throughout the upcoming school year.
There are multiple ways to integrate a chess program. Each school decides what kind of chess program works best for their students. Options include using chess and chess-related activities during the day to teach curriculum standards, before- or after-school chess clubs, summer chess camps, or some combination of these programs. CIE provides teachers with the training to plan and implement programs for their schools.
CIE provides a 4-day Chess in Education Instructor – Level 1 Certification Training for teachers. Teachers who complete Level 1 training have the option of taking the 2-day CIE Instructor Training – Level 2 Certification course.
Participants receive:
- 12 mats and sets for their school
- Demonstration Board
- Teacher training manual
- Keychains, magnetic chess boards
- 50 Chesskid licenses (Chesskid is a computer based Chess program that
can be used as a teaching tool, online tournament or simply playing chess vs. computer.)

Responding to Critical Incidents in Schools: Addressing Behavioral Health Needs in the Aftermath of Emergencies
|
Emergency operations planning within schools involves preparing for both larger-scale incidents (natural disasters, bioterrorism, or mass casualties) and smaller-scale incidents (such as the death of a staff member or student). A critical, but often overlooked, planning element is how to address the behavioral health needs of the whole school community – administrators, teachers and other staff, contractors (including bus drivers, maintenance staff, food services, etc.), students, families, and other stakeholders. We will examine some key elements for school and district leadership to include in their plans. We will also identify resources for ongoing planning activities to help you respond effectively to emergencies and to enhance the resilience of your school community.

Publishing Opportunity for Teens
|
Under the Madness Magazine, a magazine for teen writers-by teen writers, is accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction for its first issue. The magazine's editorial board is composed of students largely from the North Country, working under the mentorship of the New Hampshire Poet Laureate. Under the Madness Magazine publishes writers, ages 13-19, from around the globe.
Under the Madness is made possible with the generous support of the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. The magazine began as an off-shoot of the North Country Young Writers’ Festival.

UNH Tech for Teachers Institute
|
The UNH Tech for Teachers Institute is a dynamic, paid professional development program open to middle and high school teachers from across all STEM subject areas. The focus of the program is two-fold: Building knowledge of an emerging technology—this year regenerative medicine and biofabrication—and the transformation of instructional practice through project-based learning (PBL).
The Institute will take place taking place July 17-28 on the UNH Durham campus. Upon completion, participants will receive a $1,500 award, CEUs, classroom supplies and ongoing support from UNH faculty and graduate students.

Scholarship Opportunities

The NH Charitable Foundation is now accepting applications for the Student Aid program. In order to qualify, a student just needs to live in NH and be pursuing some sort of post-secondary education. There is a single online application; in completing just one application a student is considered for all of the NHCF funds for which they are eligible.
Important dates to keep in mind:
- Dependent bachelor’s candidates and all graduate students must apply by Friday, April 14 at 5:00 pm ET.
- All other students (independent bachelor’s candidates, associate degree candidates, certificate candidates, students in an apprenticeship or licensing program, etc.) can apply on a rolling deadline through December 15 at 5:00 pm ET.
Each year, the NHCF awards more than $7 million in scholarships to help New Hampshire students with the fewest resources and most promise realize their educational goals, whether it’s a two- or four-year college degree, certificate, or professional license.

Girls Who Code is offering 9-12th grade girls and non-binary students the flexibility to choose their own summer experience based on their interests, skill level, and schedule! Whether they're brand new to coding or a coding expert, they’ll learn how to code projects they care about alongside a supportive global community of friends, mentors, and role models.
There is a 2-week immersion program (online) or a 6-week self-paced experience that will allow students an opportunity to learn in a style that works best for them while making meaningful connections. All Girls Who Code programs are free.

Invitation to participate in a research study about SEL curriculum
|
Allison Tompkins, MSEd. BCBA, Doctoral Student, UNH, is conducting a research study through a fellowship at the University of New Hampshire’s Carsey School of Public Policy to understand the experiences of teachers implementing social and emotional learning (SEL) programs. The goal of this study is to see how state-level SEL policy in New Hampshire impacts the experience of classroom teachers who enact the programs. Teachers working in schools in New Hampshire who are implementing, have implemented in the past or have tried to implement ChooSELove programming are invited to participate in this study. Why should you participate?
- Your experience with these programs can give us information about how to guide policy and practice in New Hampshire
- You will be helping to advance research in SEL practice and policy to share with families, schools and policy makers.
Participation in the study (IRB-FY2022-382) requires one interview that will last between 45-60 minutes and will be conducted virtually over Zoom. NAMI New Hampshire, in partnership with the state’s 10 Community Mental Health Centers, will bring the documentary Anxious Nation to communities statewide beginning in May. 2024 Eclipse Resources
On April 8, 2024, northern Coos will experience a total solar eclipse. Thanks to the support of the Henry and Helen Cormier Fund for Berlin, Jessie B. Cox Fund for Education, and the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund, NCES, in partnership with WMSI, will provide all students and staff in SAUs 3, 7, 9, 20, 23, 35, 36, 58, 68, 77 & 84 with ISO certified eclipse glasses to safely view the eclipse.
