Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
|
I was so excited to be able to catch the Blood Brothers' Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia's inspired set at the Gator By The Bay Festival on May 13, just a few days after Albert won "Blues Rock Artist" and "Blues Rock Album" for I Got Love, at the The Blues Foundation's 2023 Blues Music Award (BMA) in Memphis. The album was produced by Zito on his Gulf Coast Records label. Guitarist, singer, songwriter Castiglia (that's "ka-steel-ya" damnit!) is a passionate player... he's also very funny and humble to boot. He wears his heart on his sleeve and it's a refreshing mix with the wild, honest intensity and clarity of his heartfelt performances.
The Blood Brothers are both multi award-winners and recently released their self-titled own CD in March. Their musical chemistry and their "brotherhood" alliance is a real treat!
Oh yeh, and here's what happened when I was taking pics while reminding Albert we'd like to see the cover of the magazine while he was posing with it! HA!

|
(BROWNSVILLE, TN) - The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center invites you to visit Memorial Day weekend, May 27-28, for two days of live Blues during the 13th Exit 56 Blues Fest. The event recognizes the musical contributions of legendary Bluesmen Sleepy John Estes, Hammie Nixon and Yank Rachell, all Brownsville Tennessee natives. “It's important for us to continue to honor our rural Blues heritage and the pioneer Bluesmen who made the Brownsville Blues known around the world," says Sonia Outlaw-Clark, Director of the Delta Heritage Center. "And also important that we give rising Bluesmen and women an opportunity to perform."
The Exit 56 Blues Fest does just that with a lineup of regional performers offering a mix of traditional country blues, rhythm and blues, rockin' blues and everything in between. Also back this year is the “Women in Blues” feature on Sunday.

Yates McKendree :: BUCHANAN LANE
|
|
When the legendary John Hiatt tells Rolling Stone magazine “Yates was our secret ingredient,” you know that Yates McKendree’s debut record will be something special. Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter and Grammy winner Yates McKendree is a Nashville scion, who grew up in the Rock House studio run by his father, multi award winning producer, engineer, and piano man, Kevin McKendree. Buchanan Lane is Yates’ debut album dedicated to the music he loves the most: straight-up Traditional Blues.
The 13-song collection features four original compositions, two of which Yates co-wrote with Gary Nicholson, 2022 Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame inductee and multi-Grammy winner, and a selection of deep cuts from the heroes of blues and soul he has followed since the age of three, self-taught on guitar, bass, drums, and piano. While the focus is on Yates’ stellar vocals and inspiring playing, the assembled all-star group of music city session musicians leaves nothing to chance on Buchanan Lane. The crew includes Steve Mackey on upright bass, Big Joe Maher on drums, the horn section of Jim Hoke: saxophones, Andrew Carney: trumpets, and Roland Barber: trombones, with the renowned McCrary Sisters supplying background vocals while McKendree Sr. manned the recording console and multiple keyboards.

Just in Case: May 18 is "International Museum Day" ... there are so many interesting and informative blues-roots music museums around the country to be sure, but you might also discover a blues-related art or photography installation happening at one of your local museums. Look around and see what you can find. Broaden those horizons.
May 22 is "Buy A Musical Instrument Day"... this obviously needs no explanation but whether you chose a harmonica or a drum kit at music store or a thrift store, go ahead and get down with your bad self! May 24 is "National Brother's Day"... I do feel so blessed and fulfilled to have many music brothers that are like my family. May 25 is "National Sing-Out Day"... so if you're a singer and don't have a gig that Thursday, maybe find a jam. or whether you're a singer or not, might as well enjoy yourself... let it all hangout and let the neighbors "hear" some of your favorites. I know for a fact that music is a healer, so just do your thing. It's a stress reliever.
