Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
|
Earl Thomas wanted to make sure I captured down to his shoes when I asked him to pose for this magazine photo-op at the Gator By The Bay festival in San Diego, CA.
The uber-talented soul, blues, Gospel singer, songwriter is an international touring artist. Earl had just recently come back from a performing hiatus. He's back now with a new project – reminiscent of a foot-stomping tent-revival. He and his band and singers proceeded to tear up the stage in a soul-stirring, spirited set.
As a songwriter, Earl has written songs recorded by the likes of Etta James, Solomon Burke, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Tom Jones, etc. Earl's songs have also been featured in top television shows ER and Grace & Frankie, in blockbuster movies In The Mix (starring Usher) and Rip Torn's 40 Shades Of Blue.
Ok... gotta share a close up of his killer shoes!

Mark Cameron :: NASTY BUSINESS
|
|
Guitarist Mark Cameron's Nasty Business, his debut on the Blue Heart Records label, further explores what he calls “The Minneapolis Sound.” The ten new tracks feature the muscular sound generated by his hard working five-piece band. Backing his gritty guitar and vocals are Scott Lundberg on bass, drummer Dan Schroeder, blues harp man Rick Miller and Sheri Cameron on saxophone, percussion, and vocals.
Cameron brought in several guests to bolster the big sound including Tommy Barbarella on keyboards, vocalists Tonia Hughes, Sara Renner, and Grammy nominee Teresa James along with the horn section of Zack Lozier and Ian Schroeder.
Opening track, “Sorry” is a full production number that sets the tone for things to come. The title track, “Nasty Business,” features a slinky groove along with greasy harmonica and sweet backing vocals in contrast to the heady subject matter. The bump ‘n’ grind blues “What’s For Supper” is layered with snarky idioms on the subject of tough love. Acclaimed drummer, producer and sound designer, Greg Schutte, sits in on the swinging “Language Of The Blues,” with hot horn jabs and more sweet backing vocals emphasizing Cameron’s message of peace and love. The slow burning “That’s A Fact,” has Cameron playing the role of a brooding lover with convincing theatrics. Cameron narrates the tribute to a northland juke joint and its notorious proprietor, “Nick’s Place,” that could have come out of the pages of a Mickey Spillane novel. The pulsating “Everything” lays out the attributes of a popular Femme Fatale in an advisory tone. Teresa James joins Cameron on the sultry Latin spiced poem of unrequited love “Combination.” He and Miller commiserate on common karmic pratfalls during the acoustic Delta duet “Life Is Good.” The Swamp Pop love song “Voodoo” closes the set with melodic flair.

Just In Case... plus Holidays & Birthdays
|
• Patriot Day (USA) Sept 11
• International Peace Day Sept 21 • Native American Day Sept 22
"Hard times ain't nothing that music won't help heal..."
Birthdays: Sept 7-Little Milton Campbell (1934-2005 pictured), Latimore (1939); Sept 8-Harmonica Fats (1927-2000), Guitar Shorty (1939-2022), Derrick "D'Mar" Martin; Sept 9-Otis Redding (1941-1967), Inez Foxx (1942); Sept 10-Roy Brown (1925-1981), Johnny Rawls (1952); Sept 11-Barbeque Bob (1902-1931), John “Juke” Logan (1946-2013); Sept 12-Alger "Texas" Alexander (1900-1954), Gus Cannon (1883-1979); Sept 13-Charles Brown (1922-1999); Sept 15-Silas Hogan (1911-1994), Snooky Pryor (1921-2006); Sept 16-B.B. King aka Riley B. King (1925-2015), Little Willie Littlefield (1931-2013), Billy Boy Arnold (1935); Sept 17-Henry Butler (1948-2019); Sept 18-Vanessa Collier (1987)
Just in case: Just in Case: "Actor's Day" is September 8th. The history or theater and acting probably goes back as far as 4000 B.C. Egypt, China, Ancient Greece, It had it's highs and lows depending on the current environment (usually religious influences). Thankfully The Renaissance period arrived... then Shakespeare. Italy was actually the birthplace of modern professional acting in the West during the early 16th century.
Blues-roots performers have also done some acting. Think Louis Jordan, Chris Thomas King (pictured), Tina Turner, Tom Waits, and of course the "Blues Brother" cast of Aretha Franklin, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, Alan Rubin, "Blue Lou" Marini, Steve Cropper, Donald "Duck" Dunn, John Lee Hooker, Pinetop Perkins, Willie Hall who all had some speaking lines.
And, as usual, I challenge you to fill in some blanks! Have fun!
