Billy Jones & The Delta Blues Outlaws ::
WELCOME TO THE BLUES HIGHWAY
|
|
Bay area guitarist, singer and songwriter Billy Jones Bluez was something of a child prodigy who studied under Little Johnny Taylor, Rufus Thomas, and Larry Davis. He then hit the road running hard, performing, touring, and ultimately delivering six albums, including this latest, live, self-release, Welcome To The Blues Highway.
Billy sees his music as a modern, natural progression of where the blues need to go. Featured on this new release are Rico Smith on drums, Reverend Keith Tucker on bass, Corey Bray on keys and backing vocals and Uncle Daddy Billy on lead vocals and guitar.
The set kicks off with “Shadetree Mechanic” with Jones growling, funky guitar, and organ horn jabs. “Please Come Home for Christmas,” the Charles Brown 1960 classic is up next. “Running Out Of Lies” is a heavy, soulful cut. “Trying To Get Next To You” features some honky tonk piano and an organ solo as the guitar and backline drive the tune.
“Someone New – Before I Let Go” is another deep soul cut with Jones playing some heavy licks on guitar and singing with passion. “No Diggity” is a funky, driving piece with lots of wah wah. “Love’s Train” features a big guitar intro and is some soulful and cool, mellow stuff. Jones and Company then deliver a rousing, funky, bouncy version of the classic “Barefootin’” featuring some more great organ work.
“Can We Talk” has Jones moaning and wailing, wearing his feelings on his sleeve. Next is the soul blues classic, “Everyday Will Be Like A Holiday,” then Jones give a soulful, impassioned makeover to “Tennessee Whiskey.” The set wraps with “Keep On Rolling,” a cool, slow paced tune about life on the road.
Billy and the band give it their all and are fine, soulful bluesmen who know how to entertain. A dozen inspired performances of a mix of originals and covers makes for a fun album to enjoy over and over.
