Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
|
Here's Toronto, Canada band Bywater Call. Powerhouse, soulful vocalist Meghan Parnell and slide-guitar master Dave Barnes are the driving force of this 7-piece Southern Soul, Roots Rock outfit that features Bruce McCarthy on drums, Mike Meusel on bass, John Kervin on keys, Stephen Dyte on trumpet and Julian Nalli on tenor sax. Formed in 2017, they have been Canada's Maple Blues and Independent Blues Award nominees and have made waves on the Canadian Festival Circuit, the U.S. and Europe.
This picture was taken in July after their rousing set at Briggs Farm Blues Festival in rural Pennsylvania. Staunch blues music fan and photographer Mary Ann Haskell raved about the band and said she can't wait to see them again!

Roots & Blues Festival asks ticket holders to pay it forward, waive refunds if possible
|
(SALMON ARM, BC, CANADA) - After a wildfire-abbreviated Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival in British Columbia, organizers are asking ticket holders to waive their refunds to support next summer's festival.
The festival was cancelled after its opening night in August as the Bush Creek East wildfire threatened the Shuswap.
"Ticket holders to the 31st annual Roots and Blues have the chance to support the magic of live music," the festival says.
"After the short but sweet festival this summer, ticket holders can choose to waive all or a portion of their refund and donate the proceeds to support next year's Roots and Blues," management says in a press release.
Salmon Arm Folk Music Society executive director David Gonella says the festival relies on revenue from multiple sources, with a large portion of generated through the previous year's festival.

Music documentary “The Blues Society” to premiere Oct 29
|
(MEMPHIS, TN) - The Blues Society, directed by filmmaker and scholar Dr. Augusta Palmer, begins its film fest run with their world premiere at the Indie Memphis Film Festival Oct 29 at 3pm (CDT), at Playhouse on the Square in Memphis, Tennessee. The screening will be followed by live musical performances.
The Blues Society pays tribute to the artists who performed at the Memphis Country Blues Festival in the late 1960's and of Bohemia in 1960s America. The Memphis Country Blues Festival (1966-1969) all started with a $65 check, a ball of hashish and a bunch of white bohemians who set out to rediscover forgotten bluesmen of the early 20th century.
This feature-length documentary reevaluates the life of the Memphis Country Blues Festival through the lens of race, the counterculture of the 60s and the genre of Memphis blues. It’s the story of Blues masters like Furry Lewis and Robert Wilkins who had attained fame in the 1920s but were living in obscurity by the 1960s. It’s also the story of a group of white artists from the North and the South who created a celebration of African American music in a highly segregated city. The Blues Society also contains some fantastic footage of the 1969 Memphis Blues Festival.

Tom Buenger :: BLUES FROM CAUCASIA
|
|
West Coast songwriter multi-instrumentalist and talented vocalist, Tom Buenger, has burst onto the national scene with his sophomore album, Blues From Caucasia. The ten new originals and an inspired cover reflect his love of rock, soul, blues, roots, and gospel. Buenger is once again joined by award-winning guitarists Teresa Russell from Los Angeles and Rafael Tranquilino from Mexico City as well as Pacific Northwest cohorts, guitarist Chris Eger, Richard Williams on bass, and drummer Cyrus Zerbe.
Opener “Above The Sun,” is a joyous Tulsa blues train shuffle with a tent revival melody. “Start A Fire,” mixes neo soul vocals with gritty blues harp and sizzling lead guitar. Blues of desperation, “That Ain’t Right,” flaunts some swaggering drums, more hot harmonica, and snarling vocals from Buenger convincingly playing the part of a man done wrong. “Mean Things” is a deceptive title for a cheeky easy going acoustic ramble with sweet guitar picking.
Buenger and company do their best Orange Blossom Special-styled country fiddle tune, “Get With Me,” as he tries to sell himself to a prospective love interest. The vocal showcase, “Don’t Stop,” is akin to a number from the Blind Boys of Alabama with its message of hope and inspiration delivered with layers of soothing harmonies. The ultra-smooth ballad “Feel Alright,” is a powerful acoustic driven piece of modern R&B with high production value. “Fight No More” showcases more of Buenger’s vocal skills as he handles all the harmony backups on the track with a simple guitar accompaniment and harmonica colors in a fresh creative way.
The Piedmont Blues update, “Talk To Me,” is a sweet solo acoustic track that mixes trad style with modern energy. “Soul Of A Man,” first recorded in 1930 by blues evangelist, Blind Willie Johnson, is transformed into a soaring hymn of personal testimony and praise for an uplifting benediction.

Just In Case... plus Holidays & Birthdays
|
• Oct is "International Drum Month"
“You see, we are here, as far as I can tell, to help each other; our brothers, our sisters, our friends, our enemies..."
...Stevie Ray Vaughan
Birthdays: Sept 28- Koko Taylor (1928-2009), Ben E. King (1938), Rev. Billy C. Wirtz (1954); Sept 30- Z.Z. Hill (1935-1984), Nick Schnebelen (1978), Tony Braunagel (1949); Oct 1 Albert Collins (1932-1993), George "Wild Child" Butler (1936-2005); Oct 2-Coco Montoya (1951); Oct 3-Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954-1990 pictured), Billy Branch (1951 Blues in The Schools founder), Keb' Mo' (1951), Deborah Coleman (1956-2018); Oct 4-Duke Robillard (1948), Betsie Brown (Blind Raccoon CEO); Oct 5-Roy Book Binder (1943), Rick Estrin (1949); Oct 6-Cheryl O'Grady Yearnshaw (great friend & BFG Sales Director), Diunna Greenleaf (1957)
Just in case: October 1st is loaded with "holiday" mentions... for instance it's "International Coffee Day" (an extra pick-me-up in order), "National Homemade Cookies Day" (bring it on neighbor), "International Day of Older Persons" (respect), "National Hair Day" (more or less?), "National Black Dog Day" (loyal and lovable). Man, you could no doubt match some blues attributes to this list! And that's just October 1st! Ya gotta wonder how much time people have on their hands!! Whatever you do, please keep smiling. It's good for the soul!
