Chris Yakopcic :: LIVE AT THE HIDDEN GEM
|
|
Fingerstyle acoustic blues guitarist, singer-songwriter and instructor Chris Yakopcic has been playing the circuit of bars, cafés and listening rooms for over a decade. His third album, Live At The Hidden Gem, recorded in one special evening at the Dayton Ohio music club, captures master craftsman Yakopcic at his finest; delivering award-winning pre-war Delta and Piedmont Blues inspired by his heroes Robert Johnson, Bill Broonzy, Blind Blake and more. The twelve-song set is an even split of originals and cover songs, each showcasing his jaw dropping talent at rhythmic, high-energy thumb-bass picking guitar patterns and sweeping dynamics that accompany his homespun sincere vocal stylings.
Yakopcic opens with his jaunty tune “Gotta Get Goodbye Somehow.” He then delivers a deft reading of Blake’s “Chump Man Blues” from 1929. The funky “When It All Goes Wrong At Once” has a fast-moving groove. He digs deep into Robert Johnson’s 1937 Delta Blues cornerstone “Traveling Riverside Blues.” “The Hangover” is a delicately picked shuffle. He takes Leonard Cohen’s statement about the songwriting craft “Tower Of Song,” and transforms it into a frenzy of bluegrass licks and tongue twisting vocal phrases.
An affectionate reading of “Kind Hearted Woman” further reflects Yako’s devotion to the art of the Delta Blues. His National Trojan Roundneck Resonator Guitar sings like a gospel choir on “Sounds Of The Highway.” Yakopcic elevates the “hammer on” guitar technique on his brisk remake of Tom Waits’ rumbling train song “2:19,” and the slinky “Sweet Time Blues” pays tribute to the maker with a sampling of St. Louis Blues. The heartfelt ballad “My Last Three Strings,” is followed by “Preachin’ Blues,” with Yako playing lead and rhythm all at once and revving up the Robert Johnson standard for a pyrotechnic finale.

Just In Case... plus Holidays & Birthdays
|
"Antone’s is my foundation. I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing if it hadn’t been for Antone’s. It allowed me to experiment, explore, and try to better myself as a musician. I was fortunate enough to hear stories and history from Pinetop Perkins and James Cotton. Everything felt so justified. It all made sense when I was at Antone’s." ... Gary Clark Jr.
Birthdays: Oct 19 William "Piano Red" Perryman (1911-1985); Oct 20 Jelly Roll Morton (1890-1941), Bugs Henderson (1943-2012), Vasti Jackson (1959); Oct 21 Steve Cropper (1941), Elvin Bishop (1942), Michele Lundeen (yer faithful e-Guide Editor); Oct 23 Rufus "Speckled Red" Perryman (1892-1973), Boozoo Chavis (1930-2001), Carol Fran (1933-2021); Oct 24 Sonny Terry (1911-1986), Willie Mabon (1925-1985), Bill Wyman (1936), Jimmy Dawkins (1936-2013); Oct 26 Detroit Junior (1931-2005); Oct 27 Henry Townsend (1909-2006), Clifford Antone (1949-2006 Antone Records and Nightclub pictured); Oct 28 Ben Harper (1969); Oct 29 Peter Green (1946-2020), Hadda Brooks (1916-2002), Eric Gales (1974); Oct 30 Bob Koester (1932-2021 Delmark's Founder); Oct 31 Julia Lee (1902-1958), Ethel Waters (1896-1977)
Just in case: October 25th is "International Artist Day."
Art is a creative human expression.
Art portrays the beauty of life or a bitter reality. It records history, revolutions, rebellions, and sometimes is a means to escape them. In short, there is no history or culture without art. This day celebrates all forms of art — paintings, sculpture, photography, architecture, music, and more. Amen!
(pictured: Telluride Blues Fest 2021 poster by Rob Gonzo)
The evening of October 26th is "Worldwide Howl at the Moon Night." While this is a day to let your inner howl out for real, it's actually also associated with animal welfare, specifically that of the wolf, the non-domesticated defender of the wild.
Either way, you can be a lone wolf or get your pack together, and while the moon may be in it's "waxing crescent" phase that night, go ahead and let it all out when that sliver of moon presents itself!
