How Free Play Promotes Children's Intellectual Development
Free play (that is, play initiated and directed by the children themselves) is activity that fully engages the child, involves much mental self-control, is always creative and often highly imaginative, and regularly introduces problems that the child is motivated to solve. In this talk I will elaborate, with examples, on how these aspects of free play promote the child’s intellectual development and will summarize research evidence that such play indeed does promote children’s cognitive growth.

The Special Value of Age-Mixed Play
Throughout most of human history children were rarely if ever segregated into separate age groups. Most social play among children, until very recently, involved children who differed, sometimes widely, in age. In this talk, based in part on my own research at settings where children over a wide age range mix freely, I will describe the lessons children learn in age-mixed play that are less likely to be learned in age-segregated play. I will, for example, explain how older children enable younger ones to play in more advanced ways, and younger ones inspire older ones to play in more creative ways, when they play together rather than separately. I will also present evidence that older children develop nurturing and leadership skills through play with younger ones and become nicer even to one another when younger children are in the mix.

It’s time to grab your brushes and pencils! Let's imagine air sports in a peaceful world. Can you use your imagination to show how pilots, skydivers, and astronauts show kindness and respect and become friends? Your picture could show people enjoying air sports at a friendly competition, helping others at the airfield, or even working together in space! How does peace look in the freedom of the air or among astronauts? Air sports bring people together, no matter what they think about politics, religion, or race. Let’s unite through art and and air sports, and show others how to inspire love, respect, and unity in the sky and beyond!

Literacy for English Learners: What's "Reading Science" Got to Do with It?
The most recent controversy in the so-called reading wars is whether what is sometimes called “reading science" applies to English learners. Compounding the problem is a lack of clarity about what “reading science” actually means. But regardless of whether we call this body of knowledge “reading science,” “research on reading,” or something else, what we know about how learners learn to read applies to English learners as well as English speakers. However, there are important differences that educators should consider when teaching students who are learning to read in a language they are simultaneously learning to speak and understand.
