Getting ready to board the LRBC
|
Hi blues friends!
I have to say I'm super excited to be sailing on the upcoming Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise #39 (LRBC). We board Holland America’s ms Koningsdam in San Diego, California this Saturday Oct 28 and head off to the Mexican Riviera with ports in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Nearly 150 artists will be playing over the course of the week, along with artists from various bands gathering together for one-of-a-kind, impromptu jams into the late nights.
I'll even be hosting one of the Pro-Am Jamarama's in the Crow's Nest on Oct 31st (Halloween) from 5:15pm-7:15pm. If you're so inclined, come by and jam or at least say "hi" and hang a bit!
There are theme nights throughout the week that are fun. The outfits and costumes can be spectacular if not hilariously creative!
We return Nov 4... no doubt tired but truly energized from a week's long journey filled with over-the-top musical passion, laughter, and camaraderie. The stuff memories are made of and forever etched.
Yes, it's going to be a killer Blues experience! Needless to say, next week's E-Guide will be delayed.
If you're sailing with me hope our paths cross!
Your E-Guide Editor,
Michele Lundeen aka the "Queen of Steam"
(the pic is a snippet of one of my costumes from last year... still working on some of this year's ideas, and as I type, I realize I'd better hurry it up!)

Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps ::
ROSE COLORED GLASSES VOL. 2
|
|
Those rose-colored glasses that Teresa James sports on the album cover of her latest release, Rose Colored Glasses Vol. 2, are much more than just a clever prop and title. They represent the continuation of a vision that began almost exactly two years ago, when James and her musically exuberant Rhythm Tramps – fronted by her warmly soulful vocals – released Rose-Colored Glasses Vol. 1, finding the joys of love and life through the lens of their rose-colored musical outlook. In addition to being awarded two silver medals from the Global Music Awards and a Libera Award nomination for Best Blues Record, James also received her second Blues Music Award nomination (Contemporary Blues Female Artist) following the release of Vol 1.
Since those glasses were overflowing with that vision, those ingredients are back in place for Vol. 2, another dozen expressive songs hand-crafted by producer/bassist/songwriter/husband Terry Wilson along with James and caressed into existence by James' honeyed voice that treats every song as an emotional rescue. Wilson notes, "So many times I thought I'd be finished with a tune, and then Teresa would come in, hear it, and teach me how it should be done, especially melodically and dynamically.”
The Tramps plus a few friends are their usual crackling good selves here, allowing James to blend her Texas roots with their present Los Angeles environs into crisp, swinging, countrified Southern California soul. James's expressive vocals are smooth and sensuous, with just a hint of romantic grit, and always right in tune with her message. The icing on the cake for the project was a trip to Malmsbury, England where James and Wilson had the opportunity to visit with and learn from their friend, Grammy-winning producer and engineer, John Porter, while he completed the mixing and mastering of the album

Just In Case... plus Holidays & Birthdays
|
• Halloween Oct 31
• Nov 1-2 Día de Muertos
"Day of The Dead"
"I Put A Spell On You," was composed in 1956 by Jalacy "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins
"What’s wrong with acting like a wild warrior?” Hawkins said when criticized by certain groups about his performances. “I’m making a living. I’m not breaking the law. How dare you?'”
Birthdays: Oct 26 Detroit Junior (1931-2005); Oct 27 Henry Townsend (1909-2006), Clifford Antone (1949-2006 Antone Records and Nightclub pictured); Oct 28 Ben Harper (1969); Oct 29 Peter Green (1946-2020), Hadda Brooks (1916-2002), Eric Gales (1974); Oct 30 Bob Koester (1932-2021 Delmark's Founder); Oct 31 Julia Lee (1902-1958), Ethel Waters (1896-1977); Nov 1 Sippie Wallace (1898-1986); Don Robey (Duke/Peacock Records 1903-1975); Nov 2 Mark Wenner (1948); Nov 3 Mable John (1930), Sonny Rhodes (1940); Nov 4 Delbert McClinton (1940); Nov 5 Ike Turner (1931-2007), Studebaker John Grimaldi (1952); Nov 6 Rory Block (1949); Nov 7 Johnny Rivers (1942); Nov 8 Bonnie Bramlett (1944); Bonnie Raitt (1949), Eddie “Vaan” Shaw Jr. (1955); Nov 9 Linda Hopkins (1924-2017), Susan Tedeschi (1970); Nov 10 Bobby Rush, George "Mojo" Buford (1929-2011)
Just in case: "National Author's Day" is Nov 1st. Regardless of what time period or where they’re from, authors have always had the ability to teach, entertain, and move us. So what is an author? Well, historically and permanently, it’s someone who uses their words to move their followers.
If you search online for blues books, you'll discover a plethora of authors. But let's not only salute authors of books that are historical, educational and fictional, but also of documentaries, movies and, yes, songs.
