Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
Here's Roger Naber, CEO of the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise popping in at the Crow's Nest after the San Diego All-Stars & Friends show during the Oct 28-Nov 4 LRBC.

Multiple Keeping The Blues Alive (KBA) recipient, Roger has been promoting the Blues for over 40 years, as an independent promoter, as owner of the twice-honored KBA, Blues club Grand Emporium (1985-2004) in Kansas City, as co-founder of the Kansas City Blues Society and the Kansas City Blues & Heritage Festival, and as the co-founder of the Ultimate Rhythm and Blues cruise (which ran 1993-1998).

After a brief hiatus, Roger revived the Blues cruise idea in 2001 with his Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise and it's been going strong, two times a year every since (minus Oct 2020 and Jan 2021 which were rescheduled due to the pandemic). Jan 2024 will mark the 40th LRBC on the high seas.
You can tell Roger's one happy guy!

Life and times of Blues Pioneer Big Bill Broonzy
William ‘Big Bill’ Broonzy picked up a guitar in Chicago around 1920, and became the first of the original blues masters to tour Europe. His powerful voice and unique country-blues guitar style would shape the future of the genre in the US and the UK.

It’s worth remembering that not all musicians had influence during their lifetimes. For example, Robert Johnson, as iconic as he is now, died in obscurity with his incredible music only making an impact decades after his death when his recordings were rediscovered as the ‘blues revival’ gained traction in Europe.

Of those who did have an influence at the time, William ‘Big Bill’ Broonzy stands tall. Even now, 65 years after his passing, Broonzy continues to influence blues musicians as much as he does folk, country and jazz artists – just as he did way back in the 1920s when his powerful voice and guitar was first unleashed on the record-buying world.

Separating fact from fiction in the story of Broonzy’s life is complicated. Like many early blues artists that found second careers in their later years, he was prone to contradiction when it came to his own life events and his place in the lives of other artists. Was he born, as he claimed, in 1893? Later research suggests maybe 1898 or 1903. Was he born in Mississippi or Arkansas?

What is known is that he was one of 17 children. Not all survived. He was one of twins, the other being a sister. His father, Frank Broonzy, also went by the name Bradley. His mother was Mittie Belcher. The musician claimed his father also had six children by another woman. Broonzy states: “My mother only found out about that after he died. If she’d known before, he might have died sooner!”

Steve Howell And The Mighty Men :: BEEN HERE AND GONE
Steve Howell And The Mighty Men’s latest album, Been Here And Gone, closes with a cover of the timeless guitar anthem “Walk Don’t Run,” and, fittingly, that title may best sum up Howell’s refreshing style and approach. Howell doesn’t howl nor shred… Howell figuratively walks and doesn’t run through this album’s dozen covers. This low-key approach results in gimmick-free vocals and captivating guitar work.

This band-produced effort features Howell on vocals, electric and acoustic guitars backed by Mighty Men - Chris Michaels on electric guitar, Dave Hoffpauir on drums, Jason Weinheimer on bass and organ. The straight-forward production and arrangements are as uncluttered as the performances, and the choice of material is intriguing.

“The ‘In’ Crowd” and sounds like Howell belongs there. As with all the tracks, his guitar has an irresistible au naturel tone, sounding like you’re sitting right next to his amp. “Bad Boy” is a laconic jazz blues from the ‘30s written by Lil Armstrong (Louis’ second wife) and Avon Long.

A sweet version of “Candyman,” drawn from the Rev. Gary Davis’ catalog, is followed by Ray Charles’ “I Believe To My Soul,” sung with a tone of resignation rather than the anger of other renderings. Howell next resurrects “Such A Night” which was done by the Drifters (with Clyde McPhatter) and Elvis Presley. Howell’s gorgeous, delicate instrumental treatment of the Delfonics hit “La La Means I Love You,” spotlights the rich beauty of the melody.

Shifting gears from a non-vocal take on Gerry and the Pacemakers’ “Ferry Cross The Mersey,” Howell slides into an obscure swampy blues originally done by William “Cat Iron” Carradine entitled “Jimmy Bell.” Likewise, an instrumental arrangement of the Los Bravos ‘60s pop hit “Black Is Black” is then juxtaposed with a traditional Appalachian tale of murder, “Wild Bill Jones.”

Before he ventures into Ventures territory with the closer, there is one more nod to another great bluesman, Big Bill Broonzy and “Willie Mae.”

Just in case: November 22 is "National Jukebox Day," which always falls on the day before Thanksgiving. With the invention of the jukebox, people could enjoy music in restaurants and bars. They allowed people to pick out their own favorites songs and enjoy music in restaurants and bars.  I'm sure we all have some fun memories of flipping through all the choices and picking songs on the variety of jukeboxes, whether large or tabletop. Artists also found a new way to get public exposure and were further enabled to sell vinyl. Some jukeboxes truly look like a work of art in themselves, let alone the treasures they might hold.

"World Hello Day" is November 21 and celebrated by 180 countries to illustrate the importance of personal communication for preserving peace. This unofficial holiday was created in 1973 with the hope that people can settle their differences with communication rather than conflict.

The day encourages people to participate by simply saying ‘hello’ to at least 10 friends, families and strangers.

Maybe take the time to learn how to say hello in a couple of different languages and put that into practice during the day.

Hola, bonjour, zdravo, guten tag, konnichiwa, privit, shalom, aloha, hallo, namaste, ciao, shalam, merhaba, hallo, bula, ya’at’eeh, hei, jambo, li-hó...
