Blind Pig Records is coming back!
|
(NEW YORK, NY) – Blind Pig Records announced that it is officially back in business! The label, which began in 1977 in the basement of the Ann Arbor club by the same name, is recognized as one of the world’s premier American blues and roots recording companies. Its rich repertoire includes Muddy Waters, Magic Slim, Luther Allison, Tommy Castro, Deborah Coleman, James Cotton, and Elvin Bishop. The reboot comes eight years after The Orchard, a leading global music distribution and artist + label services company and member of Sony Music Entertainment, acquired Blind Pig from its original founders, Jerry Del Giudice and Edward Chmelewski. Since then, the label released successful records by Altered Five Blues Band and Mitch Woods, and a 40th Anniversary double compilation album, but mostly remained on hiatus. The next chapter of Blind Pig will be headed by Jeff Schroedl, a 30-year music industry veteran based in Milwaukee, WI. “We’re thrilled and grateful for The Orchard entrusting us to carry on the great legacy of Blind Pig. We look forward to developing and investing in the next generation of talented and creative artists,” said Schroedl, adding, “The label will embody the same independent spirit as its founders, focusing on exceptional artists and great songs, with a personalized approach.” Label founders Del Giudice and Chmelewski commented on the relaunch: “We’re proud of the impact Blind Pig Records has made in preserving the music of traditional blues artists as well as in discovering and recording highly gifted musicians who further expanded the definition of American roots music. We’re happy to know that with Jeff’s expertise and commitment Blind Pig’s rich history will continue.” Blind Pig will resume in the coming weeks with a string of new signings, and new releases expected in 2024.

It's Not Too Late To Make A Difference!

Little Village is a nonprofit record company that seeks to shine the light of awareness on those who might not otherwise be heard and in doing so further the belief that a life filled with diverse music builds empathy, making for stronger communities and a better world.
Little Village artists own 100% of their content and owes nothing for all services provided by Little Village, including recording, manufacture, marketing and promotion.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, look what Little Village Foundation was able to do in 2023: The Sampaguitas were interviewed in November on NPR’s Here and Now program. Diunna Greenleaf’s I Ain’t Playin’ was named in the 2023 30th Annual Blues Awards “Album of the Year” by Living Blues Magazine. Little Village was a 2023 recipient of the prestigious “Keeping the Blues Alive Award” from The Blues Foundation. NPR’s eTown sat down in June with Denver bluesman Nic Clark for some music and conversation with Jim Pugh about Little Village. The Waterfront Blues Festival featured Little Village artists D.K. Harrell, Alabama Mike and Nic Clark. King Biscuit Festival featured Little Village artists D.K. Harrell, Candice Ivory, Sonny Green, Memphissippi Sounds, and Tia Carroll.
Yes, 2023 has been an amazing year, but Little Village needs your help to continue to make the music happen in 2024.
As all proceeds from the music goes directly to their artists, Little Village depends entirely upon charitable contributions from people like you to fulfill their mission. Join the Village!

Big Harp George :: BIG HARP GEORGE DOES CHRISTMAS
|
|
Big Harp George doesn't know if you've been naughty or nice – but he's got a special Christmas gift ready for you either way. It's an album of unconventional Christmas music that reflects his unconventional songwriting mind. It's music that's lyrically sharp and clever, with lots of Big (chromatic) Harp, but still very Christmassy – in an irreverent Big Harp George kind of way. It makes you think that if Mad Magazine ever released a Christmas album, this would be it.
Big Harp George (George Bisharat) is a San Francisco Bay Area blues singer, songwriter, and chromatic harmonica wizard. The chromatic has a jazzy, sophisticated voice, and combined with Bisharat's smart songwriting, makes for a distinctive musical package. It was music that captured Bisharat's imagination in his early teens, but he set that aside for a successful career as a criminal defense lawyer, an award-winning professor of law at UC Hastings College of the Law, and expert commentator on law and politics in the Middle East.
But the music was hard to resist, and about 12 years ago, Bisharat tuned in again. He recorded his first album, Chromaticism, in 2014, which earned him "Best New Artist" award nominations from the Blues Foundation and Blues Blast Magazine, as well as high praise from music critics for his blues-laced chromatic style. Four more successful albums followed, with his most recent being Cut My Spirit Loose.
But now it's time for Christmas giving. Bisharat has been writing and recording holiday songs occasionally since 2018, when he cut “Where'll I Be for Christmas?” with the late “Little Charlie” Baty on guitar. He's added a few more here and there to round out this holiday album, Big Harp George Does Christmas, of what he calls “decidedly nonstandard tunes.”

Just in Case: "December 21 is National Short Girl Appreciation Day." I wanted to see if I could find the height of some blues ladies. I've read that Sugar Pie DeSanto (left) is 4'11" last count. I found a source that said the late Koko Taylor was 5"1". Etta James was 5'3". Bonnie Raitt is 5'4" and the late Sippie Wallace looked shorter than her in some photos I've found. I believe that Shemekia Copeland and also Tierinii Jackson-Nataly of Southern Avenue are in the :short girl" category, but alas it's not like artists mention their heights in interviews! So, while this has still ended up like finding a needle in a haystack, I know there's a lot of us "shorty's" out there even if we might look taller onstage! (I get asked that at times actually and I'm 5'2" these days!). If you’re a short girl yourself, you know at least your feet are never going to hang off the bed. I often wonder if anyone reads these these things I dig up! If so, I hope this short girl at least gets you to crack a smile.
