Connect Youth Leader training will be offered in the North Country: Learn more at info session January 11th
|
The Connect Youth Leader curriculum, developed by NAMI NH, is nationally recognized as a leader in suicide prevention training for youth. Connect Youth Leader training is a two-day training for youth leaders and adult co-facilitators that prepares youth and adults to conduct suicide prevention training for teenage audiences. Friends of youth at risk are typically the ones who see suicidal warnings before adults. Because youth may not know what to do about a friend at risk, or may keep a suicide plan “secret,” it is important for youth to be trained in suicide prevention and intervention. Research consistently shows that peer training is a very effective method for educating youth.
NAMI NH has a grant that will support offering a Connect Suicide Prevention Youth Leader training in NH. NAMI NH would like to offer this two-day training in the North Country. Connect Youth Leader begins with adults training on day one and on day two we bring together adults joining with high school age youth to learn the Connect Youth Leader curriculum to share with their peers. This trainer the trainer model has worked well to sustain the knowledge around suicide prevention in NH and throughout the country.
The Connect Youth Leader training for up to 15 adults and 25 youth. The training will be scheduled some time before June 30, 2024, in coordination with interested schools or organizations. Youth leaders should be selected to represent a cross-section of local youth culture and should be offered continued adult support in their role as co-trainers after the training is completed. The training emphasizes that the role of youth is to seek help from an adult when there is a concern, NOT to take on the role of a counselor.
