DKI APCSS hosts Defense Industrial Base Resilience Workshop
|
“We are working closely with allies and partners across the Indo-Pacific and beyond to build a more dynamic, innovative, resilient, and productive defense industrial base," said Mr. Jed Royal, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, at the conclusion of the Building Collective Defense Industrial Base Resilience workshop hosted by DKI APCSS in January. “DKI APCSS brought together government officials from the United States and its allies and partners to share their perspectives about challenges and solutions. More than ever, defense industrial base cooperation is a key part of our shared regional vision for peace, stability, and prosperity in a free and open Indo-Pacific.” Read more

Senior Leaders Gain a New View of the Region at TSC 23-2

The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies recently graduated 27 Fellows from the Transnational Security Studies Course (TSC) 23-2, closing out the Center’s slate of course offerings for the 2023 calendar year.
From December 3-9, the senior leaders received lectures on crucial security issues in the Indo-Pacific region. DKI APCSS faculty shed light on topics such as the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy, China’s Perspectives on the Indo-Pacific, Cybersecurity, Maritime Security, and modernizing partner and alliance relationships... Dr. Byrd briefs members of Japan's Upper House on Myanmar

DKI APCSS’ Dr. Miemie Winn Byrd recently briefed the Members of Japan’s Upper House on the current situation in Myanmar. The meeting was convened and hosted by MP Mr. Masaharu Nakagawa, the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee to Support Myanmar Democracy; Chair of the General Meeting of Democratic Party Diet Members; a former Minister of Finance; and Minister of Education, Culture, Sport, Science & Technology. The meeting was held at the Diet on Dec. 9, 2023. She also briefed the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau/ Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Bailey selected as the new deputy director
|
Russell Bailey has been selected as the new deputy director of the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies.
A seasoned professional, Bailey has extensive executive-level service at the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, the Joint Staff, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and the National Security Council staff at the White House, as well as tours on two U.S. Embassy country teams (in Indonesia and Singapore).... In January, DKI APCSS hosted a number of U.S. Ambassadors from around the region. The ambassadors were in Hawaii to attend the annual U.S. Indo-Pacific Command's annual Ambassador Conference. One of the sessions was held at the Center. In addition, the Center hosted individual visits from:

During a recent webinar, Dr. Lami Kim shared her insights on various pressing issues regarding the nuclear Indo-Pacific with Dr. James Minnich host of the new Security Nexus Webinar series.
In a region where six nuclear-armed states and three threshold nuclear powers intersect, tensions and complexities abound. Recent assessments revealed China’s expansion to over 500 nuclear warheads with an expectation to triple that by 2035, while North Korea may have as many as 100 warheads now, and could double that by 2027. South Asia presents its dynamics, with India and Pakistan holding significant nuclear capabilities. The United States and Russia further contribute to the region’s nuclear complexity, each possessing more than 5,000 nuclear warheads. Read more...
