Magic City Blues Festival is on "hiatus"
|
(BILLINGS, MT) - After 22 years, the Magic City Blues Festival in Billings, Montana is taking, what founder Pam Goodridge is calling, a "hiatus."
Goodridge and her husband Tim first launched the festival in downtown Billings. During the last two years, the August two-day festival was held at MetraPark. There are many reasons they have decided not to do it this time around and the top one is, "we have no venue," Goodridge explained.
"The Yellowstone County Commissioners wrote me a letter and said that they didn't want Magic City Blues to be at MetraPark anymore," says Goodridge. "They said it was a conflict of interest since my husband, Tim, works there, despite approving the event in 2022 and 2023."
Every fall, after each festival comes to an end, she said they think very hard if they want to do it all again. "My family has enjoyed creating and producing events (over 1/2 dozen) in Billings over the years," says Goodridge. They thank and appreciate everyone for their support of the Magic City Blues Festival since it's inception and for all the fun had.

Kevin Burt & Big Medicine ::
THANK YOU, BROTHER BILL: A TRIBUTE TO BILL WITHERS
|
|
Thank You, Brother Bill: A Tribute to Bill Withers from soulful singer, guitarist, songwriter Kevin Burt and his band Big Medicine, is Burt’s second album for Gulf Coast Records. The album was recorded at The Sound Box Recording Studio, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and mixed and mastered at Dockside Studios in New Orleans.
"Kevin Burt has been a force for years and is finally getting the international recognition he so deeply deserves,” says Gulf Coast Records founder Mike Zito. “His voice is commanding and soulful and his songs are honest and from the heart. On this new album, Kevin resonates his soul with the music of Bill Withers. They have a connection deeper than their voices."
The band is Kevin Burt on guitar, harmonica, lead vocals, Scot Sutherland on bass, Ken Valdez on lead and rhythm guitar, and background vocals, and Eric Douglas on drums and percussion.
“Listening to Bill Withers tell a story or sing a song for me is one and the same,” adds Burt. “It instantly attaches itself to my soul. Mr. Withers told me in a roughly two-hour conversation we had many things that (pardon the pun) lean on today. One of those nuggets of insight was to ‘tell the stories that make me feel most vulnerable, that’s what people connect with.’ His story relates to my story. His songs relate to different points in time in my life like no other as an artist.”
"Thank You Brother Bill"

• Martin Luther King Day Jan 15
• Australia Day Jan 26
"Hard times ain't nothing that music won't heal..."
Birthdays: Jan 11-Slim Harpo (1924-1970); Katie Webster (1936-1999), Michael "Hawkeye" Herman (1945); Jan 12-Ruth Brown (1928-2006), Mississippi Fred McDowell (1904-1972), Long John Baldry (1941-2005); Jan 13-David "Kid" Ramos (1959); Jan 14-Allen Toussaint (1938-2015), Clarence Carter (1936); Jan 15-Earl Hooker (1929-1970), Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968), Queen Ida (1929); Jan 16-Barbara Lynn (1942 pictured), Lester Davenport (1932-2009), Robert Wilkins (1896-1987); Jan 17-Paul Rishell (1950), Mick Taylor (1949), EG Kight (1966); Jan 19-Henry Gray (1925-2020), Janis Joplin (1943-1970), Willie "Big Eyes" Smith (1936-2011), Christone "Kingfish" Ingram (1999); Jan 20-Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter (1888-1949), Luther Tucker (1936-1993)
Just in case: • January 15 is "National Hat Day." If you don't regularly already, have some fun and wear and enjoy a hat of your choice and style. Do your thang! • Jan 20th is "National DJ Day" to celebrate the work of disc jockeys everywhere. In the 1940s, Sonny Boy Williamson No. 2 (Rice Miller) brought the blues to audiences throughout the Delta via his live broadcasts from KFFA in Helena, Arkansas, and later from WROX in Clarksdale, WAZF in Yazoo City, and other stations. WDIA in Memphis had Maurice “Hot Rod” Hulbert, Riley ”B.B.” King (the "Beale Street Blues Boy"), Rufus Thomas and of course longtime DJ, Sonny Payne. Wolfman Jack was a West Coast favorite playing blues, rock n' roll and, rhythm & blues. Tip of the iceberg! Soooo many memories with DJ's as a part our entire lives to this day, right?
