66th GRAMMY Awards Blues & Roots Nominees
|
(LOS ANGELES, CA) – The 66th GRAMMY Awards took place Feb 4, 2024 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. The Premiere Ceremony featured Best Contemporary Blues Album Nominees Larkin Poe in the opening ceremonies. I really was looking forward to hearing them and for the world to experience these talented and unique siblings, but apparently the Grammy producers thought that a mashup of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” with a big-ass band and what is normally a riveting A Cappella, powerful vocal act, Pop Vocal Album Nominee Pentatonix, plus Christian music Nominee Jordin Sparks, and percussionist Sheila E. And though the crowd seemed to approve enough (no, they didn’t go crazy), I personally didn’t feel like it did these talented artists or their genres much justice. On the other hand, Gospel Performance Nominee/Winner Kirk Franklin and his full on stage at the Premiere brought the house down with a powerful, uplifting performance. Joni Mitchell completely tugged our emotional heartstrings during the regular GRAMMY broadcast as did Tracy Chapman, and the Tina Turner tribute was a showstopper.
The Premiere ceremony honored the following GRAMMY Winners in the overall Blues-Roots type categories:
Best Traditional Blues Album: All My Love for You - Bobby Rush
Best Contemporary Blues Album: Blood Harmony - Larkin Poe
Best Roots Gospel Album: Echoes Of The South - Blind Boys Of Alabama
Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album: The Count Basie Orchestra Directed by Scotty Barnhart, Basie Swings the Blues
Best Album Notes: Written In Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos -
Robert Gordon & Deanie Parker, album notes writers (Various Artists)
Best Historical Album: Written In Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos - Robert Gordon & Deanie Parker, album notes writers (Various Artists)
Best Regional Roots Music Album (Tied):
New Beginnings - Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. & The Legendary Ils Sont Partis Band
Live: Orpheum Theater Nola - Lost Bayou Ramblers & Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra

Where the history of the Blues lives on
|
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - This year, the annual observance of Black History Month coincides with the 45th anniversary of the Delta Blues Museum, Mississippi’s oldest music museum. Black History Month highlights the contributions of African-Americans to our collective culture.
The Museum’s Gift Shop offers resources of that history in the Delta region, such as Mississippi Delta Bluesman, a CD that features David “Honeyboy” Edwards. Edwards played throughout the Delta in the 1930s-40s with the likes of Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, and Big Joe Williamson. Mississippi Delta Bluesman features Edwards’ soulful singing and sharp guitar riffs on 13 tracks of classic Delta country blues. The CD comes with a 26-page booklet about his musical legacy with historic photos.
Two books capture the past in images: The Hidden History of the Mississippi Delta and Clarksdale and Coahoma County, while Lost Delta Found reveals how that history was documented in the 1940s by Fisk scholars. And the Gift Shop also offers souvenirs of the Crossroads, the junction of Highways 61/49 near Clarksdale that is credited as the hub of the Delta blues.
Your purchases help the museum preserve and present the legacy of the Delta Blues. These items are available in the Delta Blues Museum Gift Shop at 1 Blues Alley, Clarksdale, Mississippi or online.
You can also learn more in their Explore and Learn feature about the city’s New World District, an historic site of local Black culture.

Rick Vito :: CADILLAC MAN
|
|
On his latest album, Cadillac Man, guitarist and performer Rick Vito includes a song titled “You Can't Stop A Guitar (From Playing the Blues).” That could easily be the motto of Vito's long and successful musical career, and it's certainly the welcome theme of the Grammy-nominated guitarist's first album in five years due for release March 22.
Vito is probably best known for his role in the legendary supergroup Fleetwood Mac from 1987-1991, when he revived the rootsy blues feeling of the band’s early years. In 2008 he partnered with Mick Fleetwood to form the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band and was nominated for a 2010 Grammy in the Best Traditional Blues category as both artist and producer for the album Blue Again.
Vito’s unique slide and lead guitar work has enhanced hundreds of recordings and performances by such legendary artists as Bob Seger, Bonnie Raitt, John Mayall, Albert Collins, John Prine, and many more. Seger called his iconic slide guitar solo on the song “Like A Rock,” “the single most spectacular solo I’d ever heard.” That's the solo that got massive exposure as the guitar voice on a Chevrolet truck commercial that ran from 1991 to 2004.
"...a master of the instrument” John Mayall
Vito has been cranking out solo albums since 1992, and Cadillac Man is his first since 2019's Soulshaker. This release of a dozen tracks shows off his haunting slide technique, his songwriting skills with some fresh new material, a welcome dip back into his musical past and one magical cover.
