Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
Taken aboard the Oct 2023 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, here's the 2023 Blues Music Award Instrumentalist-Guitarist of The Year winner, the uber-talented and humble Laura Chavez who is also a songwriter and producer. The first woman to win the BMA in that category, she's currently a 2024 nominee in the same category.

The multitude of bands she had/has played, toured and recorded with include Lara Price, the late Candye Kane, the Nikki Hill Band, Vanessa Collier, The Mannish Boys, the late Deborah Coleman, Monster Mike Welch, Whitney Shay, Casey Hensley and many more. She pretty much lives to play and has achieved so much in her career in her 41 years.

Waterfront Blues Festival Early Bird Tix now
(PORTLAND, OR) - Early Bird 4-Day Passes for the July 4th-7th 2024 Waterfront Blues Festival are now available for purchase at the website. The Early Bird tickets, available now through February 29, offer the best prices of the year, starting at just $99 for four whole days of music, or $390 for four days of VIP vibes.

And don’t forget, kids 12 and under have free entry into the festival, thanks to Buick GMC of Beaverton, making it a perfect summer destination event for the whole family.

The initial 2024 festival lineup of performers will be announced on March 1st, but now’s the time for music lovers to take advantage of the Waterfront Blues Festival’s lowest pricing of the year.

The Waterfront Blues Festival, held at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland, Oregon, is a cornerstone event of the Pacific Northwest, and one of the most dynamic music events in the world, hosting legendary performers and up-and-coming artists pushing the boundaries of blues, soul, rock, funk, folk, R&B and more.

This immersive and inclusive summer festival features 100+ performances on 4 stages across 8 acres of downtown Portland's beautiful waterfront, plus a huge dance floor, dedicated family areas, a marketplace of local vendors, ‘Blues Cruises’ on the Willamette River, and Oregon’s largest fireworks show. It’s a can’t-miss Fourth of July weekend!

Entering its 37th year, Waterfront Blues Festival is a multigenerational celebration of music, culture, and community, and one of the country’s best fully independently owned and operated music festivals.

Since 1988, Waterfront Blues Festival has raised over $10 million dollars to support local community organizations. The benefiting charitable partners for the 2024 festival are Meals on Wheels People and The Jeremy Wilson Foundation Musician Health & Service Program.
Electric Church For The Spiritually Misguided Live Mar 1
(NEW ORLEANS, LA) - On Friday, March 1st at Live at the Broadside (600 North Broad St. in New Orleans, Louisiana), New Orleans bassist, composer and producer Dean Zucchero brings his Billboard #1 Blues album, Electric Church For The Spiritually Misguided, to the stage by featuring the very world-class musicians of the Crescent City that helped forge the record’s success.

In a style akin to the historic live concert of 1976, The Last Waltz, Zucchero ushers the audience through an eclectically powerful performance of the “Electric Church” songbook with each of the original lead vocalists crooning a mini-set of tunes: Johnny Sansone, “Sunpie” Barnes, Johnny Rawls, Ghalia Volt, Jonathon “Boogie” Long, Dale Spalding, Leslie Smith and Jeremy Joyce all deliver their unique vocal character in songs from the record, and beyond.

In addition, the backing band consists of original studio performers Jason Ricci, Papa Mali, John Fohl, Tiffany Pollack, Whitney Alouiscious, Megan Brunious, Tom Worrell, Eric Bolivar and of course Dean Zucchero on bass.

Stylistically, the music strokes broadly ranging from tough blues-rockers, to funky struts, to even porch-style Delta tunes. Showtime is 7pm. Find tix here. Show entry is 18+.
Song Keepers
For three decades Music Maker Foundation has sought out the country’s unsung, tending the roots of American music - Song Keepers, a new 143-page book by Georgann Eubanks and four CD box-set combo uncovers a secret history of American roots music. Featuring 85 songs from 75+ artists, it’s drawn from 30 years of recording. Song Keepers connects the virtuosic with the gut-bucket, delicate folk with pounding blues.

A testament to Music Maker Foundation’s innovative method of nurturing American roots music, Song Keepers features interviews with figures integral to the development of Music Maker, including Grammy winners Taj Mahal, Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and folklorist William Ferris. Illustrated with 100 stunning photographs, it offers a new vision of Americana’s future via a journey through the past.

Bradenton Blues Festival sadly ends its 11-year run
(BRADENTON, FL) - The Bradenton Blues Festival, which debuted on the Riverwalk in 2012 and took place there again this past December, will not return. Realize Bradenton, the nonprofit organization that has produced each of the festivals, issued a statement on February 14.

"Following the 2023 Bradenton Blues Festival, we conducted a thorough analysis of the event," said Andrea Knies, director of communications and community engagement, in an email. "With thoughtful consideration to the mission and goals, we have made the decision to discontinue the Blues Festival in 2024."
The Bradenton Blues Festival took place annually in December and typically attracted a capacity crowd of about 3,000 with the roster for each year's event usually announced in March.

Johnette Isham, the founding director of Realize Bradenton also co-founded the Blues Festival, which she attended each year with her husband, Jeffrey Plunkett, who died in May 2022. Isham retired in October 2022 as director of Realize Bradenton and passed away last summer.

Realize Bradenton plans to offer the community a new event beginning next year.
"We are exploring options for a new event, likely in spring of 2025, and are excited about the possibilities of bringing people together in new and different ways," Knies said. "Stay tuned for updates."

The similar Sarasota Blues Festival was started in 1991 by the Sarasota Blues Society and became a regional hit until 2012.

Just in case: February 18th is "National Drink Wine Day." Okay, well we know we don't need a special day to "drink" wine but let's think of it as a day to not only celebrate a human tradition that's thousands of years old.... AND, recall those songs inspired by this nectar. Early jump blues type songs include "Stick's" McGhee & His Buddies "Drinking Wine Spoodie Oodie" that hit the #1 spot in 1949, "Cherry Wine" by Esther Phillips (1953), "Pink Champagne" by Joe Liggins And His "Honeydrippers" (1953), "Hey Bartender" by Floyd Dixon (1955), the obscure "Wine Drinker" by Cats & The Fiddle (1950), ... many more over the years but we simply can't leave out Luther Allison's heart-wrenching plea of "Cherry Red Wine."
