Photo Moments with the 21st Annual BFG Magazine!
|
Taken aboard the Jan 2024 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, here's award-winning guitarist, soulful singer, songwriter, Albert Cummings. His style has been compared to the likes of Albert and Freddie King, and SRV, but these were just ingredients for his own expressive, impressive blues-rock gumbo.
Cummings arrived strong on the scene, possibly thanks to an early chance encounter with Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton (Double Trouble) who produced his first solo album in 2003. He's continued to grow over a course of endless tours and ten previous and charting albums. His newest album, Strong, features 12 tracks that include 6 originals and was produced by Grammy Award winning Tom Hambridge.

Here's singer, songwriter, entertainer, longtime BFG friend and former staff member, the effervescent Yvonne "Pinkie" Rideau with a brief recap and video of her Jan 2024 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise #40 experience...
"To say that I had the time of my life would be a grave understatement. I cried every single day. Just being able to have live blues available for a whole week was exhausting by the third day. I recorded a video to Tim (the husband) saying, "I can't believe I have four more days of this!" I was graced and blessed to be on stage with Tommy Castro, Albert Cummings, Mitch Woods, Eden Brent, Mr. Sipp, Mathias Lattin, David Julia, Chuk Barber, Eric Gales (on drums for a moment) and almost got to share the stage with Christone "Kingfish" Ingram (sigh)!
The staff was so friendly it was almost creepy. They all knew my name by the first day because of my shirt! I was all over that ship!
I joked that I walked to Honduras! Here it is two weeks later and I'm just now feeling better. (At no point in time do I remember being involved in an MMA match. Yup, that sore.) The salty sea air jacked up my hair and my throat. Deanna Bogart said I had "Boat Throat" from not being used to the salty sea air. Nonetheless, I was on stage 11 times!
I told everyone that I was gonna sing! I even wrote a song, "A Virgin on the Blues Cruise," now released on YouTube and 164 music platforms!
Side note: I wrote a pamphlet guide! I devised a system. It works! The biggest complaint was not getting to see all of the artists. I figured it out!
"How to See Everyone, Eat, Sleep & Survive the Blues Cruise" by Pinkie Rideau."
Click on the image to see the video Pinkie created featuring some fun pics and the song she wrote onboard and performed at the Crow's Nest Jam. BTW, that's former Blues Festival e-Guide editor Gordon Bulcock on lead guitar...

JJ Grey & Mofro :: OLUSTEE
|
|
Olustee, the highly anticipated new album on Alligator Records from gifted singer, songwriter JJ Grey, will be released Friday, February 23.
JJ Grey, with his crack band Mofro, create an irresistible blend of fire-breathing R&B, swampy blues, aching soul and funky, Dixie-fried rock. All songs were written and arranged by JJ Grey, except for “Seminole Wind” which was written by John David Anderson.
With this, his first release in nine years and his first-ever self-produced record, JJ has created a breathtaking collection of deeply moving, masterfully written, funkified rock and front porch Southern soul music.
Olustee is an aggressively groove-driven record, fueled by JJ’s gritty vocals and biting guitar, all testifying with a preacher’s foot-pounding fervor.

Just In Case... plus upcoming Holidays & Birthdays
|
• February is Black History Month
• February is American Heart Month
Birthdays: Feb 23-Johnny Winter (1944-2014); Feb 24-Willie Kent (1936-2006); George Thorogood (1950); Feb 25-Ida Cox (1896 or 1898-1967); Feb 26-Antoine "Fats" Domino (1928-2017), Bob "Bear" Hite (1943-1981); Feb 27 Goran Petco (BFG webmaster & magazine designer); Mar 1-Zac Harmon (1957); Mar 2 Alvin “Youngblood” Hart (1963), Rory Gallagher (1948-1995); Mar 3-John Primer (1945 pictured); Mar 4-Bobby Womack (1944-2014); Mar 5 J.B. Lenoir (1929-1967), Peg Leg Howell (1888-1966), Tommy Tucker (1933-1982); Mar 6 Walter "Furry" Lewis (1893-1981), Walter Trout (1951); Mar 9 Georgia White (1903-1980), Lloyd Price (1933); Mar 10 Dave Alexander aka Omar Shariff (1938), Ronnie Earl (1953)
Just in case: "World Bartender Day" is celebrated on February 24. One of the (other) oldest professions known to man — the first bartending job was probably held in the 1400s but said to have emerged several thousand years ago in various locations such as Rome, Greece, and Asia.
Bartenders are indispensable to the hospitality industry. We can't imagine a pub, bar, or nightclub without a bartender, right? They keep patrons well supplied with beverages, whether alcoholic or other, and they can keep the party going, not just enable you to drown your sorrows. They can be creative and also be great sounding boards, or gurus of sage advice.
And you know there have been plenty of Blues songs written or referring to bars and drinkin'. "Hey Bartender" (Floyd Dixon), "You're So High (I Ain't Drunk)" (Albert Collins), "Sittin' Here Drinkin'" (Muddy Waters), "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" (John Lee Hooker), "Beer Bottle Boogie" (Koko Taylor), "Bad, Bad Whiskey" (Amos Milburn)...
Yep, I could go on but you can dive in and discover a bunch more if you like. It goes without saying that blues music has a long and no doubt storied history with bars and their bartenders.
