Honoring the Women of the Blues
|
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - Delta Blues Museum continues to celebrate its 45th anniversary year during Women’s History Month in March.
The Museum gift shop has several souvenirs that pay tribute to pioneering Blues women including a boxed card set, William Stout's More Legends of the Blues. The set highlights 50 important artists — among them Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Victoria Spivey, Big Mama Thornton and Sippie Wallace. Each card features an original portrait along with a biography on the flip side.
Live from the Delta, Panny Mayfield's photographs of musicians in and around Clarksdale, features a vivid record of the Blues scene at the Crossroads.
There is also a selection of Blues CDs in the gift shop which includes artists like Shemekia Copeland, Ruthie Foster, and Koko Taylor, as well as the classic Blues women artists.

Fargo "Winter" Blues Festival
|
(FARGO, ND) - Maybe Punxsutawney Phil's predication was off this year or the folks in Fargo, North Dakota named their event beforehand, or, maybe they know something we don't (and it can get cold in Fargo). While Spring is officially supposed to start on Tues March 19, the Fargo "Winter" Blues Festival is happening Weds March 27th. Ah, semantics, no matter what it's called, we're excited for any festival that features live blues music for sure!
Appearing will be the uber-talents of Mike Zito as part of his Life is Hard album release tour, the Scott Ellison Band, The Blue Wailers, and Heart & Soul.
The Drekker Brewhalla Magic Factory, at 1702 1st Ave N, in Fargo, North Dakota is the venue for this indoor festival that will no doubt be cozy (I just checked their weather forecast). There will be a variety of brews on tap and access to a full bar, plus food is available. You can even reserve a room at their hotel!
Doors will open at 4pm and showtime is 4:30pm. Tickets are $35 advance. Find tix at the event website or via their Facebook site. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Looking ahead, the 2-day, outdoor summertime Fargo Blues Festival will happen in August of this year.

Emma Wilson :: MEMPHIS CALLING
|
|
Award-winning British rhythm & blues singer, songwriter Emma Wilson’s album, Memphis Calling has been Nominated "Album Of The Year” by the 2024 UK Blues Awards. Emma co-wrote four of the nine tracks.
Her incredible vocal talent and songwriting on her debut album, Wish Her Well, brought her to an international audience and her winning the title of “Emerging Blues Artist of The Year” at the 2022 UK Blues Awards.
In early 2023 Emma visited her Distribution Company ‘Select-O-Hits’ in Memphis and met with company owner Johnny Phillips. Phillips was excited to share that the family-owned Sam Phillips Recording Studios had recently acquired the original STAX recording console and she should get over there and record her new album.
“This was an opportunity I couldn’t miss,” says Emma. “Producer Scott Bomar brought in legendary Memphian musicians. The recording session was so soulful – drenched in rhythm & blues… on this record I want to represent a modern English woman, deeply influenced by the music of Memphis, bringing her own Britishness, making an album with a unique contemporary sound and I believe we have achieved this.”
Emma has also been Nominated in the 2024 UK Blues Awards for "Contemporary Blues Artist Of The Year" and "Blues Vocalist Of The Year." She’s appeared on the cover and has a feature in the Jan/Feb 2024 issue of Blues Matters, a feature in February’s Living Blues magazine, and a feature in the March issue of Downbeat Magazine.

Just In Case... plus upcoming Holidays & Birthdays
|
• March is Women's History Month
• National Music in Our Schools Month
• Mar 8 International Women’s Day
• Mar 17 St. Patrick's Day • Mar 19 1st Day of Spring 2024
Birthdays: Mar 9 Georgia White (1903-1980 pictured top), Lloyd Price (1933); Mar 10 Dave Alexander aka Omar Shariff (1938), John Nemeth (1975); Ronnie Earl (1953); Mar 12 Leonard Chess (1917-1969), Bill Payne (1949 Little Feat co-founder); Mar 13 Otis "Lightnin' Slim" Hicks (1913-1974); Mar 14 Robert Pete Williams (1914-1980); Mar 15 Bertha "Chippie" Hill (1905-1950 pictured bottom), Lightnin' Hopkins (1912-1982); Sly Stone (1944), Ry Cooder (1947); Mar 16 James "Yank" Rachell (1910-1997); Mar 17 Nat "King" Cole (1917-1965); Mar 18 Wilson Pickett (1941-2006), Big Daddy Kinsey (1927-2001)
Just in case: Mar 8 is "National Middle Name Pride Day" which is celebrated on the first Friday of the first full week in March. Middle names were born as a means to commemorate older, or often, dead family members, or godparents. However, some people don’t know much about their middle names other than the flow may have sounded good. I'm not sure if mine has any significance, but I gave my children middle names to honor some of their grandparents. My mother didn't have one... I think after naming 13 children, her parents may have run out of ideas! I'm imagining most people have middle names but a lot of blues artists, for instance, took on nicknames as their first, middle and even last names or used their middle names as their first name. Some used "Big" and lots used "Little;" some used "Son" and some used "Junior."
Bottomline, I think Ray Charles makes a good point here indeed!
