NC Blues Week Returns with Big Plans & Big Changes
|
(GREENSBORO, NC) - The Piedmont Blues Preservation Society (PBPS) is thrilled to announce the return of NC Blues Week, the statewide celebration of the rich blues heritage and culture of North Carolina. The week-long celebration, May 11-19, features a dynamic range of events, including a film screening, beat battles, dance parties, workshops, and free live music in Center City Park on Saturday, May 18th.
PBPS plans to bring plenty of friends along for the ride during NC Blues Week 2024. Program partnerships include NC Folk Festival featuring urban dancer and folklorist Junious Brickhouse, Hip-Hop crossover with the Triangle’s Underground Collective, and rare access and collaboration with Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter’s The Lead Belly Estate & House of Lead Belly, LLC.

Various :: BLIND RACCOON & NOLA BLUE COLLECTION VOL 6
|
|
This sparkling set is the brainchild of Betsie Brown, who heads the music marketing organization Blind Raccoon, and Sallie Bengston, who, with Brown, operates the Blue Heart label. They are responsible for the impressive selection of talent represented here, with original songs taken from existing and upcoming albums, as well as previously unreleased material.
This latest sampler opens with the “Ballad Of Pat Hare,” written by and featuring the soulful blues of London's guitarist, vocalist Oliver “Mississippi” MacDonald. "Tidal Wave" is an instrumental from Anthony Geraci on piano and Hammond organ. "My Baby Loves Me Like a Hurricane" is a hard-rocking track from the late Kip London. Harpman Douglas Avery offers his original "Survival," featuring Franck L. Goldwasser on guitar.
The joyous vocals of Teresa James spark the bluesy-rockabilly "I Do My Drinkin’ On The Weekend," and roll with her honky-tonk piano. The Texas Horns, vocalist Ange Kogutz and guitarist Anson Funderburgh deliver the R&B-laced "Never Buy My Soul." Benny Turner offers his "Smoke My Peace Pipe (Smoke It Right) aka “A Tribute To Big Chief Bo Dollis," the leader of the Wild Magnolias. Dave Keyes works keyboard magic on his own swingin’ "Pookie Po Po."
"Man Goes Blind" is a bluesy rocker from guitarist Trevor B. Power. "Forever Blue" is a ballad from Terry Wilson-Slesser and Mark Taylor, then the barroom blues of "Struck Out Again" by chromatic harp wizard Big Harp George (George Bisharat). Fingerstyle guitarist Steve Howell & The Mighty Men preview the R&B chestnut “I'm A Little Mixed Up.”
"She Might Meet Me” is an upbeat track from Kenny Parker's guitar, featuring Fred Foley on vocals. Blind Lemon Pledge (James Byfield) polishes up the classic “House Of The Rising Sun.” Reverend Freakchild closes with a stirring acoustic finale, "Don’t Miss Nothing ‘Til It’s Gone."
The album highlights the elegant eclecticism and remarkable originality of Blind Raccoon artists.
