John Clifton :: TOO MUCH PAY
|
|
Touring the USA and Europe up 100 to 200 days a year for the last couple of decades until the COVID pandemic hit slowed the roll of road dog bluesman, singer, songwriter harp player John Clifton. He planned to regroup, write and record new music during the lockdown, but in June of 2020 he was plagued with a severe case of heart failure, which halted all progress. “I got hit with a double whammy” says John. After recovering John finally returned to the road in February 2022 and began gathering ideas for a new release.
While on tour in Europe in August of 2023, Clifton recorded in Warsaw Poland at Zle I Tanio Studio with members of the Polish R&B Boogie band, The Boogie Boys, who often back him while touring Europe. The result is the new album, Too Much To Pay. The project was then brought back to California for some finishing touches, making Too Much to Pay a true international project.
Too Much To Pay is the fourth full length release from John and it consists of 10 all original songs Each song is a different style while sharing a common sound from traditional Chicago blues to 60’s soul to swamp rock. The album is a high voltage tapestry of style and sound!

• June 20 Summer Solstice
Birthdays: Jun 13-James Carr (1942-2001) Jun 17- Matt Hill (1985); Jun 18-Sara Martin (1884-1955); Jun 19-Jerry McCain (1930-2012), Big Bill Morganfield (1956); Jun 20-Lazy Lester (1933-2019); Jun 21-Skip James aka Nehemiah Curtis James (1902-1969); Jun 23-Helen Humes (1913-1981); Jun 24-Jeff Beck (1944), Tad Robinson (1956), James "T-Model" Ford (1923 – 2013); Jun 25-Clifton Chenier (1925-1987), Eddie Floyd (1937), Mel Waiters (1956-2015), Roger Naber (LRBC CEO); June 26-Big Bill Broonzy (1903-1958); Jun 28-David "Honeyboy" Edwards (1915-2011) Armenter "Bo Carter" Chatmon (1892–1964)
Just in Case: June 14th is "National Bourbon Day" Well, you know I'm gonna reference the classic, "One Bourbon, One Scotch, And One Beer," written by Rudy Toombs and first recorded in 1953 by Amos Milburn before John Lee Hooker recorded it in 1966 and George Thorogood hit with it in 1977! There's also the infamous Bourbon Street in Louisiana, and Louis Prima's "Bourbon Street Blues."
June 14th is also "Monkey Around Day!" Take that however you like! HA! Just set aside your worries and toss out your inhibitions. Yeh baby! But remember... "You Can Have My Monkey" but please don't you mess with my man!
June 20 is "Ugliest Dog Day" and celebrates the pooches out there with a face only a mother could love. Well, we know there's been several Blues-type songs written about "dogs" good, bad and ugly... "Salty Dog Blues" Mississippi Hurt, "Lonesome Dog" Lightnin' Hopkins, "I Wouldn't Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me)" Bobby "Blue" Bland, "Walkin' The Dog" Rufus Thomas, "How Come My Dog Don't Bark When You Come Around?" Dr. John, "Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog" Johnny Cash, and even "I Need A Dog" Michele Lundeen (yes, your e-Editor). What are some of your faves? (Mojo Hound (who is actually not ugly) is Copyright of our friend MojoHand. Please do not reproduce. But do checkout his website for all sorts of super cool, bluesy stuff to purchase!)
