Alki UCC Weekly Messenger June 20, 2024
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Last Sunday we celebrated our commitments and re-commitments to our beloved community. We imagined together what might be.

We were invited to consider the themes of our stewardship season, and indicate which was most resonant:

Your energies centered most on the themes “Sense of Wonder” and “Enough at Every Table,” with the corresponding sticky notes, “Freed from worry” and “Overcoming the feeling of scarcity.”

The Scripture that came to mind for me when considering these themes is one of incredible abundance and wonder: the story of Mary of Bethany anointing the feet of Jesus.

And so, this Sunday, we’ll sit alongside Mary, uncork that bottle, and pour the oil out. We learn from her how to live abundantly, full of wonder, sitting at the feet of God. It is in the place beyond words.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Now that we have a long-coveted date for a retreat at Pilgrim Firs, which is a wonderful camp and conference center just across the water not far from the Southworth ferry, it's time to discuss and clarify our theme.

We're assembling a team of a few folks interested in coming together to share and collaborate on goals for our time away.

What calls to you?

Please contact the church office office next week to express your interest and we'll get back to you with some potential meeting times.

Imagine what we can do together!
Stewardship 2024

We pledged our commitment to Alki UCC with our pledges for the upcoming year but also our favorite message throughout this Stewardship season as we Imagine Together what is possible for ourselves, our community and the world.

Healing: A World Made Whole; Enough at Every Table;
Sense of Wonder; A Rested Church;
Vitality; Communities of Belonging

I chose a Sense of Wonder and a Rested Church. What did you choose?

Did you miss one of these Sunday messages or did you need a refresher? You can watch most of these sermons on the Alki UCC  YouTube Channel.

Thanks to the beloved community, we will continue to thrive well into the future living our purpose: A faith community, growing together as disciples of Jesus Christ, courageously sharing God's love with each other and the world.

Are you wondering how you are doing against last year’s pledge? Please email financialsecretary@alkiucc.org or call our amazing volunteer financial secretaires, Sandy J and Julia P.

If you have any questions about Stewardship or Pledge commitments, please email stewardship@alkiucc.org or call me.

UCC Conference Meeting Report
Thank you to our delegates: Diane J, Julia C and Julia P, along with Pastor Emily, for representing Alki UCC in the Special Conference Meeting earlier this week.

The Meeting was attended by more than 140 people from across the Pacific Northwest Conference on Zoom. We voted to call Reverend Phil Hodson to be Designated Conference Minister through June 30, 2026, with eligibility and first right of refusal for the Settled Conference Minister candidate position should it be offered by the Board after evaluation.

The Conference Board and Personnel Committee will plan a thorough 360-degree review with Phil within a year’s time. The Board looks forward to a time of strength-building and forward movement that stability in leadership will allow.
UCC Action Alert!!
Today is World Refugee Day
On World Refugee Day, Protect the Dignity
and Safety of Refugees and Asylum Seekers
June 20th is World Refugee Day. On this day, we lift up those who have fled their home countries in the midst of horrendous conditions. Yet we must do more than just remember. We must act for the refugees and the stateless and the displaced today. Those forced from their homes and rebuilding their lives in a new country should not then be met with more hardship. As humans, we should care for one another when we can. Take action here!

Leviticus 19:34 reminds us of our duty to care for refugees, saying, "The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” Time and again throughout the Bible we are called to love one another. Jesus even goes so far as to tell us how to love each other in Matthew 25:35, "For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in."

Welcoming Gifts/Supplies for Baby Vaela
Update on Alki UCC Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum
Vicky S reports:

"She joined the world last Monday morning in the wee hours." Congratulations to parents Manuela and Danner.

Donations of gently used clothing for birth-to-six-months, or gift cards that can be used for food, clothing or — especially — diapers, would be most appreciated.

Vicky and Dave will deliver the donations! Thanks for considering.
In Our Circle of Prayer
We thank you, O God, for the beauty of this life.
We give you gratitude for the relationships in our lives and this community of faith.

We pray for all those who grieve.
Comfort their hearts and hold them close. Sandy J requests prayers for "Mary Jane’s family and friends as she died last night. We had been friends since 1969!"

We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.
Vicky S requested special prayers for Catherine, Sam and Janelle. We pray for Dan K facing various health issues, Jim J's 93-year-old Uncle Don, Rev. Joan Carter, Cinda's mother Jackie S, Alki UCC's Peruvian Families Seeking Asylum (especially Kenyi), Dan’s friend, Mary, as she deals with dementia and a new place to live, Julia C's friend Jessie T and family, Amy Y's mother Corlene, Davney and Bob S, Sue's B's friends Mary and Louise, and Nick L.

We pray for our wider world.
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
Phil. 4:6-7

Wars and conflicts continue to escalate around the world, and our hearts especially go out to the people of Palestine.

UCC Action Alert:
by rejecting further military aid and assistance to Israel
and by supporting
continued financial contributions to UNRWA.

Injustices and inequalities manifest as racism, discrimination, gender-based violence, economic disparities, and other issues. As a communal response to uplift these sorrows and support our neighbors near and far, General Minister and President, the Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson calls the church to a season of prayer. Prayer undergirds our witness, ministry, and advocacy as we work for peace and a just world for all.

This is an open invitation to anyone who feels called to offer a prayer to end violence in any manifestation, and to bring about peace. Share your prayers using the People’s Prayers for Peace form on this page. New prayers are published on this page daily.

Publishing is at the discretion of the National Ministries of the United Church of Christ and prayers may be edited for content and length.

Calling all Archivists-Wanna-Be’s!!!
The Archive Room on the Third Floor needs care. If you are interested in looking through a hundred years of Alki Church history, this invitation is for you.

The room needs cleaning, organizing and potentially digitizing memories of papers, pictures, and historical documents stored in a room for many years.

Meetings TBD to be set by the team.

Please let Julia P know if this is a commitment in which you have an interest.
The "Get Dirty" Transplant Party Continues!

We are still transplanting the hundreds of Japanese Maple seedlings into separate pots to give the Doug Firs their own growing pots.

The potting supplies are  behind the Church (just off the alley), where you'll find a nice potting bench, soil, pots, trowels, and disposable gloves.

You are welcome to work on transplanting any time. Both Aly and Julia are out-of-town this Sunday, but you could plant!

Basic directions:
 • shake out the Doug Fir (part-way).
• carefully pull apart the Maple seedlings.
• fill a little pot with soil,
plant the seedlings (1-3 per pot),
• press down, and re-pot the Doug Firs, adding soil as needed.

After potting, please put Doug Firs and new maple transplants out in front near the patio. There is a watering can and hose bib near front doors.

Please fill and water the newly transplanted seedlings. Thank you!
