Red’s Old Timers Blues Festival
|
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - Check out this year’s stellar Red’s Old-Timers Blues Fest lineup presented by Red’s Lounge in Clarksdale, Mississippi Aug 31, like the one and only Charlie Musselwhite, and Watermelon Slim among others! Nothin’ but the real-deal in Mississippi blues from 62 to 97 years old! Orlando “Little Red” Paden is doing his late-great Dad proud. The festival will be held at MLK Park & Stage near Red’s legendary Juke Joint Lounge from 1-9pm.
"Big Red," a community pillar and star in his own right, was successful in his local business endeavors, as owner of the Tin Top, Redwine's and Red's, for a span that covered four decades. His establishment, Red's Juke Joint, became an internationally known juke joint and bar hop for local and celebrity musicians on the Blues circuit, which was the impetus for his decision to found Red's Old Timer's Blues Festival, which drew crowds of blues enthusiasts from around the world, who would all converge on Clarksdale, year after year during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Just In Case... plus upcoming Holidays & Birthdays
|
JULY: July 20 National Moon Day... to honor man's first moon landing
Birthdays: July 11-Blind Lemon Jefferson (1893-1929), Jarekus Singleton (1984); July 14-Claude (d.2003) & Clifford Trenier (d.1983) (b. 1919); July 15-Willie Cobbs (1932-2021); Washboard Sam aka Robert Brown (1910–1966); July 16-Denise LaSalle (1939-2018); July 17-Peppermint Harris (1925–1999); July 18 Jalacy "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins (1929–2000), Martha Reeves (1941), Lonnie Mack (1941-2016); July 19 Arley "Buster" Benton (1932-1996), Little Freddie King (1940); July 20 Carlos Santana (1947), Steve Freund (1952), Sleepy LaBeef (1935-2019), Danielle Nicole (1983); July 21 Floyd McDaniel (1915-1995); July 22- George Clinton (1940)
Just in Case: "World Youth Skills Day" is celebrated on July 15. This got me thinking of young people that are interested or may become in music. They should be encouraged to share their passion which in turn, in my experience, can build their confidence and creativity. Of course they should be introduced to the fact that Blues is the roots of popular music and that opens up the door to history as well. They may become musicians, songwriters, studio engineers, music teachers, artists, music publicists or editors, promoters, producers, venue owners, managers, clothing or set designers... The list is broad and colorful and still incorporates the passion for music. At the very least they will have been introduced to the possibilities.
