Buddy Shute and The Motivators :: A PART OF THE WHOLE
|
|
A Part Of The Whole opens with the southern groove of “I Tried,” one of ten original tunes that share that timeless quality drawn from Buddy’s adventures in Memphis and New Orleans and his journeys through the great state of Mississippi traveling between the two. All the tunes are blues-based with some New Orleans mojo and a touch of Zydeco and Tex-Mex mixed in, covering the spectrum from the soulful minor blues “A Whole Lot Like The Blues” to the up tempo swing of “Bear’s Place.”
The two cover tunes are musical treasures and include Professor Longhair’s “Her Mind Is Gone,” which Buddy learned from “Fess” having opened for him at Tipitinas, and the classic “One Meatball.”
Produced by Buddy Shute and Chris Moore. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Chris Moore, East Hall Recording, Fayetteville, Arkansas.
"….Biscuitheads love the songs by Buddy Shute & the Motivators” - Thomas Shell Jacques-King Biscuit Time Radio
Watching a tugboat from the levee, dancing in a roadhouse, A Part Of The Whole takes you on a musical tour of the south with a new take on that feeling you get when listening to the old blues masters.

Reissues of bygone blues are coming out like wildfire
|
Liberation Hall continues its '60s-'70s projects with two previously unissued concert discs from long-gone heroes of the blues revival: Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee's Live from the Ash Grove and Lightnin' Hopkins' Live from the Ash Grove … Plus! – both with excellent audio and bonus tracks to supplement the rather short live shows.
Born Saunders Terrell, Terry (1911-86) lost his vision in two childhood accidents, so he listened all the more closely to bird calls and other sounds of nature in his native North Carolina, which influenced his whooping vocals and harmonica work with Tennessee-born Piedmont guitarist Walter Brown McGhee (1915-96).
Texas blues guitarist Sam “Lightnin'” Hopkins (1912-82) in contrast was low key and conversational with his audience here. He was a link on the chain between Blind Lemon Jefferson (with whom he'd traveled) and Bob Dylan. Between songs, the introductions and reminiscences give us glimpses of his personality.
A superbly remastered 71-minute show, Bessie Jones, John Davis & the Georgia Seas Island Singers with Mississippi Fred McDowell and Ed Young's The Complete Friends of Old Time Music Concert (Smithsonian Folkways) brought exciting, down-home gospel and blues to a New York audience in 1965.
Grammy-winning music historian Elijah Wald's heavily researched Jelly Roll Blues: Censored Songs & Hidden Histories (Hachette) uses New Orleans pianist Morton (1890-1941) as a jumping-off point as he digs into the lusty music that's often sanitized before we hear it. Musicians weren't always willing to share their raunchy material with producers or field researchers of a different gender or race. On a lighter side, we learn words' local connotations: “In the high-class houses of prostitution that lined Basin Street in New Orleans, the top pianists were known as 'professors.'” The book's earthiness is among its strengths. Excerpts from Bruce Sylvester/Goldminemag.com

Just in Case: July 24th is "Tell an Old Joke Day." The very first joke book ever found was also from Greece. Titled “Philogelos,” or “Laughter-Lover.” Well, we all know laughter is the best medicine and we know there are blues funnies and of course countless blues songs with humorous, tongue-in-cheek lyrics (plus ones we can't always understand correctly), and funny innuendos.
Get your blues and laughter going on and share some with your friends. What happens if you play blues music backwards? Your lover returns to you, your dog comes back to life, and you get out of prison.
