Photo Moments with the 22nd Annual BFG Magazine!
July 24th, 2024, 6:30pm, Harlow's Nightclub, Sacramento, California... Mark Hummel is set to perform with the James Cotton's Blues Band. BFG pal, singer, songwriter Pinkie Rideau, poses Hummel with the burning question...

"You are in New York City's Battery Park, you are on a bench looking at the Statue of Liberty and your options are this.... hot dog or pizza?" After some fun debate, Hummel decides on pizza. But, as it turns out, his fave places for pizza are actually in Connecticut and Rhode Island, much to Pinkie's surprise!

"If you have the opportunity to see this band perform, don't miss them," adds Pinkie. They are "Stellar!"

Help Launch Community Radio in Clarksdale, Mississippi
Are you passionate about the roots of the Blues? Do you believe in preserving and promoting American musical history and Black musical art forms? Are you a listener of community radio run by and for the people? Do you get tired of corporate radio washing away the distinct regional sounds of this country?

Open Sky Radio (OSR) Corp., a California-based 501c3 non-profit has built over a dozen non-commercial FM radio stations in rural west towns (CA, NV, OR), and eventually turned them over to local non-profits.

You are now invited to join in their exciting next venture to launch a non-commercial, community radio station in Clarksdale, Mississippi – the birthplace of the Blues.

They have done the planning and engineering and have a perfect host in place for this transmitter site that will expand far beyond the crossroads. With your support, they will build a 'terrestrial' radio station that will be as rich as the soil it radiates from.

WAIT 88.1FM will be programming a blues-centric, Jiveradio music platform that celebrates virtually all music genres, providing a space for both classic recordings from the deep vault and new, up-and-coming artists to be heard. Their goal is to not only entertain but also to educate listeners about the rich history and cultural impact of the music born from this significant place.

A Go-Fund-Me campaign has been started to help this town get a great blues-centric radio station of its own. Please help support this landmark radio station project for the nursery of the Blues.

Prepare for Denmark's Ultimate Blues Experience
(FREDRIKSHAVN, DE) - Mark your calendars for the ultimate blues experience of the Blues Heaven Festival November 8-9 at Arena Nord, Frederikshavn. The 18th edition of Denmark’s most prominent blues and soul festival invites you to 14 concerts and a fantastic atmosphere where a music-loving audience and top international musicians meet.

This year, the festival presents 50 musicians from 9 countries, many of whom are top multi-award winners. Look forward to a spectacular weekend filled with raw energy, emotional music, and true blues spirit each day from 5pm-12am.

Friday’s Headliner: Mississippi blues extraordinaire Mr. Sipp, “The Mississippi Blues Child,” is a 2024 GRAMMY® winner. Accolades include International Blues Challenge winner, “Gibson Best Guitarist Award,” “Bobby Rush Entertainer of the Year,” BMA “Best New Artist,” several Jackson Music Awards including “International Male Blues Artist,” “Blues Artist of the Year,” and “Entertainer of the Year,” and the “The Spirit of Little Walter Award.” Sipp is now one of Mississippi’s most important blues ambassadors!

Saturday’s Headliner: Chicago’s pride and blues powerhouse, Ronnie Baker Brooks, is a bluesman to the bone: a blistering guitarist, an innovative, boundary-pushing songwriter, and an intensely soulful vocalist. As a live performer, his boundless energy and monumental, crowd-pleasing personality keep his fans on their feet. RBB is the artist most requested to return to Blues Heaven! Alligator Records announces the signing of RBB’s label debut, which will hit the streets just in time for Blues Heaven.

These incredible performers are also guaranteed to entertain: The Nick Moss Band (US), The Cash Box Kings (US), Mark Hummel w/ Anson Funderburgh (US), Nora Jean Wallace (US), Blues Beatles (BRA), Robert Jon & The Wreck (US), Dawn Tyler Watson (CAN), Big Daddy Wilson (US), JW Jones (CAN), Nathan James (US), Harrell Davenport (US), Big Creek Slim (DK) and Kent Erik Thorvaldsen (NOR).

Blues Brothers: The Arc of Gratitude
The sound. The suits. The sunglasses. The Blues Brothers have firmly cemented their place as pop-culture icons in the annals of entertainment history. But how did a band that debuted as a goofy sketch on Saturday Night Live in 1976 go on to have a hit movie and a number one record in the space of just four short years? Simple. They were “on a mission from God.”

Now, nearly 50 years later, Elwood Blues (aka Dan Aykroyd) is on another mission—to tell the full story of how two young actors went from blues lovers to Blues Brothers. In this fascinating two-hour audio documentary, Blues Brothers: The Arc of Gratitude, Aykroyd “gets the band back together,” taking listeners on a road trip through time — from late nights in the early days with John Belushi at Dan’s speakeasy in Toronto, to working with blues legends Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Ray Charles on The Blues Brothers movie, through the founding of House of Blues, the Blues Brothers 2000 sequel, and beyond.

Along the way, Aykroyd is joined by band members, friends, filmmakers, and cohorts who witnessed the Blues Brothers’ birth and meteoric rise firsthand, including Jim Belushi, Paul Shaffer, Curtis Salgado, John Landis, Steve Jordan, and more. Also featuring conversations with the late Judy Belushi Pisano, and a previously unheard interview with John Belushi himself.

Thoughtful, entertaining, and endlessly illuminating, Blues Brothers: The Arc of Gratitude is a joyous celebration of the legendary band that kick-started a blues revival and launched a lasting legacy. The audible documentary dropped today, July 25 on Audible.com and Amazon.com.
Making a Guitar From Muddy Waters' Childhood Home
A fitting tribute for a legend...
Billy Gibbons' guitar collection has countless custom guitars and vintage gems. In this article, we'll highlight one special custom guitar that was made from wood salvaged from the childhood home of blues legend Muddy Waters.

The importance of Muddy Waters in rock and roll history cannot be understated. The Rolling Stones borrowed their name from a Muddy Waters song. He was such an inspiration to so many musicians over the years, not the least of which were the boys from Texas, ZZ Top.

As Billy Gibbons recounted on his website:
"I had phoned Jim O'Neil, founder of Living Blues magazine – he now lives in Mississippi – and accompanied him to the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale. It so happened that Sid Graves, the director, said he was making a trip to Stovall Farms [Mississippi], where Muddy Waters was raised, to inspect the cabin that was in danger of being taken down upon request of the Highway Department for safety reasons. The cabin had been hit by a tornado and they figured, well, it might fall down. As we were looking about, the director picked up a piece of scrap lumber and said, 'Why don’t you take a souvenir here.' There was quite a large beam left over, and we loaded it into the car."

Gibbons brought the beam to Pyramid Guitars in Memphis, Tennessee and gave it to Rick Rayburn and Rick Hancock. The piece of wood was cypress, which is not a common tonewood in electric hollowbodies but is used a lot in acoustic backs and sides – particularly in flamenco style guitars. It is typically quite soft and light, making it resonant.

Using reclaimed wood has its pros and cons…

Curtis Salgado :: FINE BY ME
Rest assured whatever songs Curtis Salgado brings to the table are going to have his personal soul stamp on them. It’s the singer’s magic bullet, the key element that stirs listeners and sets Salgado apart as one of the most riveting performers on stage today. Fine By Me (Little Village) is the latest evidence of Salgado wielding his impressive songwriting and vocal skills to a wide variety of styles. His music has dashes of blues, gospel, R&B, jazz, funk, rock ’n’ roll and soul at any given moment. “I just call it American music,” says Salgado, who produced the album and has been singing and playing harmonica in bands for five decades. “All I know how to do is write songs, sing them, and entertain people. I’ll use whatever I can to achieve that goal.”

From his days with the Robert Cray Band in the early 1980s through stint as the singer in Roomful of Blues and a long and distinguished solo career, Salgado has been known for his passionate and convincing vocals and a desire to move people. For him, it’s all about the soul. “I really believe that gospel is the mothership of all American music. It all flows out of gospel, no matter what kind of music it is. I’ve always loved and respected that.” Salgado also understands the power of clever turns of phrase and how that burrows into the hearts of his audience.

Fine By Me features 10 songs that Salgado wrote or co-wrote and two cover versions, but the recording shines in unexpected moments. Salgado admits that he is sometimes surprised how some songs surface. The top-notch cast includes Robert Cray and Anson Funderburgh among others.

With a lifetime of musical experiences, Salgado maintains a fresh approach to his music. “This is just a skill I’ve been learning,” he says. “I just go with it.”

Fine By Me reflects the soul of American music.
