Just In Case... plus upcoming Holidays & Birthdays
|
It might be the dog days of Summer but
"Hard times ain't nothing
that music won't help heal..."
Birthdays: Aug 1-Dietra Farr (1957) Robert Cray (1953), Bill Stuve (1951); Aug 2-Big Walter Price (1917-2012), Mark Naftalin (1944); Aug 3- Mercy Dee Walton (1915–1962), Matthew Skoller (1962); Aug 4-Louis Armstrong (1901-1971); Aug 6- Willie Lee Brown (1900–1952), Corey Stevens (1954); Aug 7-Magic Slim Morris Holt (1937–2013), Annika Chambers-DesLauriers (1992); Aug 8-Joe Tex (1933-1982), Jimmy Witherspoon (1920–1997), Robert Randolph (1977), Lady Bianca (1953); Aug 9-Trudy Lynn (1947); Aug 10-Ronnie Spector (1945-2022), Grego Anderson (1968), Leo Fender (1908-1991), Mighty Mike Schermer (1966); Aug 11-"Crying" Sam Collins (1887-1949), Aug 12-Percy Mayfield (1920-1984), Roy Gaines (1934-2021), Albert Castiglia (1969)
Just in Case: Just in case: August 8 is "International Cat Day" — a day to celebrate one of man’s most common and ancient pets. Independent, adventurous, cool. I think we can take a step further and think of all the "cool cats" or references that have crossed our path in the blues. "Black Cat Bone" comes to mind ... Ana Popovic's "Daddy Was A Preacher (Mama Was An Alley Cat), Katie Webster's "Pussy Cat Moan"... and...? While sliding around that YouTube rabbit hole I rediscovered "It Should've Been Me," an old song my band used to do by Commander Cody (originally recorded by Ray Charles with Jesse Stone in 1954)... while only one mention... "Down on the corner, was a real sharp cat... had a $300 suit, $100 hat. Standing on the curb, by a Dynaflow, voice from inside said 'come on daddy let's go!'" ....but was sure fun to hear it again!
