Photo Moments with the 22nd Annual BFG Magazine!
|
I was honored to meet folklorist, author, lecturer, scholar, educator, historian and GRAMMY winner Dr. William R. Ferris in person after his induction into the Blues Foundation's Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis, TN.
Over the past 50 years Ferris has documented Southern culture focusing on African American folklore and the rich heritage of the American South, especially blues, gospel, and story telling through recordings, books, film and photography. He's the former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities and co-founded the Center for Southern Folklore in Memphis, Tennessee.
Ferris is also the author of ten books notably Blues From the Delta (1970) and Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues (2009), which showcase his commitment to exploring the social and cultural dimensions of the blues.

Chris Daniels and the Kings ::
40: BLUES WITH HORNS VOLUME II
|
|
In the liner notes of their effervescent new album, 40: Blues With Horns Volume II, by Chris Daniels and the Kings with Freddi Gowdy, Daniels describes Louis Armstrong's brilliant 1928 recording of “West End Blues” as the beginning of an era of “horn-band sound.” The Kings’ 20th album on their 40th anniversary proves that their magnificent big-band sound is still keeping that era alive... and funky, too!
The Colorado-based Kings have been pumping out music since their 1984 founding by Daniels, with the band membership shapeshifting along the way. The Kings of this album are: Chris Daniels, vocals, electric, acoustic, slide and synth guitars; Freddi Gowdy, vocals; Steve Ivey, drums; John Thornburg, bass and vocals; Colin “Bones” Jones, guitars; Bob Rebholz, alto sax and flute; Darryl “Doody“ Abrahamson, trumpet and vocals; Darren Kramer, trombone. Daniels and Gowdy share the vocals all through the tracks. Guests adding their talents throughout include Christian Teele, percussion; Mark Oblinger and Linda Lawson, vocals with Robert Johnson and Kenny Andrus; Sam Bush, mandolin and fiddle; Hazel Miller, vocals; Tom Capek, B3 and keyboards; Steve Conn, accordion, B3; and Sonny Landreth, slide guitar.
This exuberant and joyous session opens with horns blasting, then they move on to a full-on funky groove, and there's several to choose from. The album grooves, jumps, slides, shuffles and rocks with soul and pulsating and percussive rhythms.
Chris Daniels says, “Our goal from the start was to bring the incredible energy of 'call-and response' between a singer and the horn section to a new audience.”
...And forty years later, the Kings are absolutely still bringing that energy!

Just In Case... plus upcoming Holidays & Birthdays
|
It might be the dog days of Summer but
"Hard times ain't nothing
that music won't help heal..."
Birthdays: Aug 15-Buster Brown (1911-1976), Jackie Brenston (1930-1979), Bobby Byrd (1934-2007); Aug 16-Eddie Kirkland (1928-2011), Melvin "Lil' Son" Jackson (1915-1976), Eric Bibb (1951); Aug 17-Luther Allison (1939-1997); Aug 19-Earl Gaines (1935-2009); Aug 20-Issac Hayes (1942-2008), "Mighty" Mike Schermer (1967); Aug 21-Count Basie (1904-1984), Elmore James Jr. (1939); Aug 22-John Lee Hooker (1912 or 1917-2001) photo art by Jude Kane, Debbie Davies (1952); Aug 24-Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (1905-1974), Wynonie Harris (1915-1969); Aug 26-Jimmy Rushing (1901-1972); Aug 29-Charlie Parker (1920-1955), Dinah Washington (1924-1963); Aug 30-Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson (1934-1976); Aug 31-Joanna Connor (1962), Van Morrison (1945)
CORRECTION: It was pointed out to us by a careful reader that John Lee Hooker's birth year of 1920 in our "Birthday" section conflicted with the 1912 one listed in last week's article from the Delta Blues Museum. I apologize and appreciate the heads up on our odd and unfortunate "Birthday" list error. In further research, I see that Federal census data added up to John Lee Hooker being born in 1912, yet official family sites claim he was born in 1917. I've updated for now...
Just in case: August 26 is "National Dog Day"... Yes, we love dogs, man's best friend, faithful companion, etc. and they truly can be a gift, but they haven't always been necessarily complimented in the world of blues. Sure, we sympathize in "I wouldn't treat a dog the way you treated me," (Bobby Blue Bland), and Duke Robillard's "I'm Gonna Buy Me A Dog (To Take The Place of You," But what about, "you ain't nothing but a hound dog," (Big Mama Thornton) "I ain't gonna be your lowdown dog," (Big Joe Turner), "I'm just like a mad dog, I snaps at everything I meet" ("Mad Dog Blues" Mary Butler/Walter Vinson), I'm foamin' at the mouth baby can't you see" (Mad Dog" Johnny Winter"), and "I don't want no watch dog, I wanna man right now" (Etta James "Watch Dog"), or Mississippi John Hurt's invitation "baby, let me be your salty dog" ... the hot dog and dog house list goes on!
