BluesCentric Celebrates John Lee Hooker’s Birthday
BluesCentric is celebrating John Lee Hooker, the blues guitar great's 112th birthday with some trivia, music, videos and some excellent specials on Hooker merch! The merch offer ends Saturday Aug 24th at midnight so check it out!

“Nobody know John Lee Hooker," he once said. "They know as much about my cat as they know about me."

BluesCentric gives it a shot …

John Lee Hooker was born in a music town on August 22, 1917 in the "Ground Zero of American Music," Clarksdale, Mississippi. There's a signed John Lee Hooker guitar at the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale. Just across the street from Muddy Waters' cabin at the Delta Blues Museum, you can order a beer under Hooker's signature and watch authentic Delta Blues any night of the week at this epicenter of the blues.

His first musical instrument was reportedly a tire tube nailed to a barn door. He was taught guitar by his stepfather, and blues legend T Bone Walker who also gave him his first electric.

Hooker's rhythm was so unusual, he sometimes had to accompany himself in the studio by stomping on a piece of plywood. He released over 100 albums in his career and was one of the most prolific blues recording artists ever. His first big hit, 1948's "Boogie Chillen," sold almost a million copies and made him a star.

John Lee Hooker was awarded four GRAMMY’s, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, he was inducted into the blues Hall of Fame, and the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

You can find John Lee Hooker on Spotify and on his official YouTube site.
Lancaster Roots and Blues is timeless
(LANCASTER, PA) - Lancaster Roots and Blues is coming September 27, 28 and 29. This annual festival of music and art happens in beautiful downtown Lancaster Pennsylvania, USA. The event is held indoors at multiple venues all located within three blocks of each other. Attendees receive a wristband at check-in and can move about freely from stage to stage. Expect at least 75 concerts over the 3-day festival.

Style wise, Blues is a big part of the music but they also book a variety of genres including jazz, Americana, roots music, funk, soul, rock n roll including rockabilly, zydeco, world music, and more. Artists include Nick Moss band featuring Dennis Gruenling, Victor Wainwright, Bywater Call, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, Marcia Ball, Morgan James, Toronzo Cannon and many more amazing artists.

The genre of music is less important than having artists who play from the heart and with soul and possess a high standard of musical excellence. A good description of the music at Lancaster Roots and Blues is it is timeless. They say they definitely don't chase the flavor of the month.

The music is memorable and it is superb. Find the complete schedule and ticket options on their website.

Doug Duffey and BADD :: AIN’T GOIN’ BACK
The blues is a rich and primal music, deeply rooted in the swampy soils of the Mississippi Delta and the musical souls of artists like Louisiana native and musical institution Doug Duffey. Duffey has been mining this musical vein for more than half a century with his singing, songwriting, and keyboard work, starting professionally at age 14. He's carried this soulful gumbo from New Orleans to the rest of the world with national and international performances. Duffey has created his music long enough and powerfully enough to be enshrined in the National Blues and Louisiana Halls of Fame, and the Northeast Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. In short, to paraphrase Willie Dixon, Duffey has dug the roots, and we harvest the sweet fruits.

Now Duffey has dug deep into his traditions for the riches of his latest album, Ain't Goin' Back, a celebration of his music with his band, BADD (a title carved from the initials of band members' first names). BADD includes Duffey on vocals and keyboards; Dan Sumner on guitars incl. electric and acoustic bass, percussion, vocals, and trumpet; Adam Ryland on drums and Ben Ford on bass. A few talented players complete this lineup: Dave P. Moore on harp, Jonathan Patterson on trombone and Bert Windham on trumpet. Duffey and Sumner co-produced.

Ain’t Goin' Back is tightly packed with eleven bitingly concise and lyrically gorgeous originals from Duffey and Sumner, capturing a range of styles coaxed from the timeless mists of the blues.

Just In Case... plus upcoming Holidays & Birthdays
"When words fail... music speaks!"

Birthdays: Aug 22-John Lee Hooker (1912 or 1917-2001), Debbie Davies (1952); Aug 24-Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (1905-1974), Wynonie Harris (1915-1969); Aug 26-Jimmy Rushing (1901-1972); Aug 29-Charlie Parker (1920-1955), Dinah Washington (1924-1963); Aug 30-Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson (1934-1976); Aug 31-Joanna Connor (1962), Van Morrison (1945); Sept 2-Billy Preston (1946-2006); Sept 3-Memphis Slim (1915-1988), Freddie King (1934-1976); Sept 4-Meade "Lux" Lewis (1905-1964); Sept 5-Sunnyland Slim (1907-1995); Sept 6-Jimmy Reed (1925-1976); Sept 7-Little Milton Campbell (1934-2005 pictured), Latimore (1939)

Just in case: Aug 28th is "National Red Wine Day" Lots of songs talk about the ups and downs of wine... for instance the complimentary reference in "Pride & Joy (Stevie Ray Vaughan), the resolution in "Trying To Live My Life Without You" (Otis Clay), the desperation of "Cherry Red Wine" (Luther Allison). Of course we can't forget the carefree, jump blues of "Drinking Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee" by "Stick" McGhee and His Buddies. Hot in New Orleans, hot in New York, and a flaming, red hot hit from coast to coast when it came out in 1949 on Atlantic Records! McGhee wrote the song and it also became a big hit for Wynonie Harris, and Lionel Hampton.
