Kansas City’s Annual Reggae Music & Jerk Festival September 13th-14th- & 15th 2024
Berkley River Front Park Kansas City, MO

In the quest for friendship, peace, and understanding, cultural exchange has a long history of success in bridging gaps and fostering unity among distant communities.

Friends of Reggae International, a Missouri not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation based in Kansas City, MO, launched Kansas City’s first Reggae Music Festival at Thies Mall in Volker Park in 1990.

A diverse and vibrant audience of more than 30,000 individuals attended the first event. The annual festival thrived for over three decades. The cultural and economic impact was significant. Kansas City mayors issued proclamations to honor and commemorate the festival events.

The Reggae Music & Jerk Festival is an excellent source of pride for the Kansas City community. It has demonstrated time and time again the great potential for making profound and positive contribution to the cultural life of our community. It encourages a peaceful and real dialogue between communities, increasing cultural understanding and respect. It improves the quality of life for all.

The UK reggae star Gappy Ranks joins King Remo Music on his latest release Broken Hearted.
The UK reggae star Gappy Ranks joins King Remo Music on his latest release Broken Hearted. The new single was released on Aug. 16 and is available on all platforms. The single is part of the upcoming riddim album Reggae SoulJahs Worldwide Vol. 5 (Fall 2024) which includes music by Sgt. Remo, Tikaf, Nego Hights, Soulfiya, Gucci Boss, and others.

Listen On Your Favorite Platform

Born Jacob Lee Williams in Harlesden, London, Gappy Ranks rose to prominence with his debut album Put The Stereo On (2010) which featured the now classic, Heaven In Her Eyes. He would follow this album with the critically acclaimed albums Thanks & Praise (2011) and Shining Hope (2013). Gappy Ranks won best song at the Silk Awards in London, and was nominated for a MOBO award in 2010. He has become one of the most talked-about British acts in years, both at home and abroad.

Radio/Media Download

In late 2018, the world was shocked to hear Gappy suffered a stroke right before the release of his prophetic album Hebrew (Mar. 2019). Less than a year later,In July 2019, Gappy Ranks sat down for an interview with Silver Star Sound on The Beat London 103.6FM. The star talked about music, spirituality, family and the strength he found from his loving fans across the world during the recovery. The prolific artist has continued to release dozens of singles every year including the notable Flowers, My Selecta, and Warning among others.

Broken Hearted was produced by Chilean master producer Kutral Dub for King Remo Music. King Remo is a reggae label based out of San Antonio, TX. The label founded by reggae artist Sgt. Remo has released the Reggae SoulJahs Worldwide compilation series since 2011. Gappy Ranks was also featured on Vol. 2 with his song Dreams (2014).

Canada ~ The inaugural Reggae North Music Awards will take place September 29 at the Rose Theatre in Brampton, Ontario.
The inaugural Reggae North Music Awards will take place September 29 at the Rose Theatre in Brampton, Ontario.  The event comprises 18 categories including Top Male Vocalist of The Year, Top Female Vocalist of The Year, Top Reggae Song of The Year (Male) and Top Reggae Song of The Year (Female). Canadian acts dominate the nominations which were recently announced.

The event will be held at The Rose Theater, Rose Mainstage, Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Tickets start at $60.

Concerned about the lack of recognition for reggae in Canada, Mark Bennett decided to use his initiative and stage an awards show that would do the genre justice. “For many years, the Canadian reggae and dancehall scene has been lacking a prominent music awards show. We believe that an event of this nature is essential for fostering the development of the numerous talented singers, musicians, songwriters, and producers in Canada. Hosting an annual event where all key figures in the Canadian reggae and dancehall community come together would greatly benefit the future of our music,” said Bennett, a singer popularly known as Tony Anthony.

Bennett says the Caribbean Music and Entertainment Awards, which ran from 2013 to 2019, was the last serious event recognizing the accomplishments of West Indian artistes. The Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys, is held annually and has a Reggae Recording of The Year category.

Born in St Catherine, Bennett has lived in Canada for over 30 years. Based in Toronto, he is one the country’s leading reggae acts and has been nominated for a reggae Juno twice.

To ensure the Reggae North Music Awards is above board, he said nominees are vetted by their peers. “The nominees were chosen by a select committee of music professionals. Tickets for the Reggae North Music Awards went on sale on June 11, and the excitement within black communities across Canada is growing louder by the day. We anticipate this event to be highly successful,” he said.
