Alki UCC Weekly Messenger September 5, 2024
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Thank you to all who participated at the booth we hosted with Admiral UCC at Alki Beach Pride last Saturday! We offered free bracelet-making, gave away Japanese Maple starts to grateful recipients, and offered Reverse Confessions. We had lots of volunteers who covered set-up, take-down, hosting and welcoming.

It was a wonderful way to BE the church in our community.

I noticed that our booth was an especially welcome respite for parents with young children who were grateful to sit and rest awhile at the bracelet-making table.

I had no idea what to expect from my idea to offer confessions to queer people who have been wounded by the Church. It was a subtle offering, we didn’t have any big signs announcing that we were offering Reverse Confessions. Perhaps that will come next year. But I offered it to people that came to our booth, those that seemed to be there for a reason beyond bracelet-making.

Many were allies and didn’t feel the need to personally receive a reverse confession, but they were grateful that we were offering it. They thanked us for having the witness and making the statement. A couple of people did take me up on receiving a confession, and it was an immense privilege.

I was honored to represent you, to represent the Church, in saying, “I’m so sorry you have been wounded by the Church.” In blessing them, I was blessed. In embracing them, I was embraced. That’s the way it is with grace, it’s sticky stuff. You can’t offer it without getting some on you. And this was our confession, church, our blessing from God offered to a precious beloved. So feel that grace. Take it in. Let it transform you.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Summer Concert Series Recap
Our summer concert series was a memorable lineup of performances, each offering a unique musical experience. The idea for series was conceived with the goal of getting to know our West Seattle neighbors, building new relationships, and welcoming them for three evenings of music and community.

The series kicked off on the August 6 Seattle City Night Out with a captivating performance by singer-songwriter Asia, who moved us with original songs and the stories that inspired them.

The second concert on August 14 featured the dynamic Eric Likkel jazz trio—with Ben Thomas, and Tim Carey—who performed in our cozy side courtyard, creating an intimate and vibrant atmosphere.

For last week's series finale on August 28 I was honored to perform with tenor Zachary Fitzgerald, a wonderful and accomplished opera singer. The evening was filled with powerful vocals, heartfelt music and poetry about nature.

The series was a success in great part thanks to everyone who organized, promoted, volunteered and attended I am so grateful for all the open hearts here at Alki UCC. — Stephen Anthony Rawson
Bible 101
Announcing our next worship and Bible Study series, kicking off with worship this Sunday, September 8 and Tuesday noon Zoom Bible Study on September 10:

Whether you're brand new to the Bible, know the Bible well, or are somewhere in between ... each one of us has more to learn.

Because God is still speaking.

Join in to explore the collection of ancient poetry and songs, history and myths, letters and teachings, laws and prophecies, wisdom sayings and analogies that make up the Bible. We'll talk about what the Bible is, where (and when) it came from, and how to approach it. Engaging with the Bible is a practice of seeking wisdom, and you may just discover at some point along the way that you are on the path of transformation.
