Photo Moments with the 22nd Annual BFG Magazine!
|
Here’s a group of Alabama blues women that performed at a recent Cultural Day in Pickensville Alabama, in the heart of the Alabama Black Belt.
The event celebrated Alabama Blues Women and was organized by a group of women who have saved a Rosenwald School, one of the first black schools erected by the owner of the Sears and Roebuck company early in the 20th Century, and turned it into a museum and community center.
“Our exhibition of past Alabama Blues women, (including Big Mama Thornton, Vera Hall, Dinah Washington and more) was also on display at the Pickensville Rosenwald School Community Center and Museum,” says artist and Alabama Blues Project’s founder Debbie Bond.
Pictured left to right are blues singer Carroline Shines (daughter of the late great Johnny Shines), singer, guitarist, songwriter Debbie Bond, drummer Girl Dee, and blues singer Taylor Britton

Lester Chambers & The Mudstumpers aimin’ for front porch
|
(Petaluma, CA) - At a recent rehearsal of Lester Chambers and his finely tuned Mudstumpers, they were aimin’ for your front porch. Lester and crew want you to be comfortable as they dissect and recreate much of the songbook of the eternal Bluesman, Jimmy Reed. Lester recently released Volume I of his tribute to Mathis James Reed. He used extraordinary guitarists David Aguilar and Terry Haggerty to interpret the first and second guitar parts originally recorded by Jimmy Reed and Eddie Taylor for Vee Jay Records from 1953 forward.
That said, esteemed North Bay elder rockers Lester Chambers & The Mudstumpers, featuring Terry Haggerty, David Aguilar, and Tim Haggerty, are firing up the Sebastiani Theatre on September 22. Barry (The Fish) Melton will host.
By cosmic chance, when Lester was 14, he bumped into Jimmy Reed, an experience that has profoundly influenced his musicianship.
“Jimmy Reed brought rhythm & blues music to the world. It happened so long ago that everybody thinks that they did it,” pipes Lester on the first track of A Tribute To Jimmy Reed – Volume I. Volume II is slated for a Fall 2024 release.
There will be a merch table including tee shirts, CDs, and other hippie ephemera, including Lester’s critically acclaimed memoir, Time Has Come: Revelations of a Mississippi Hippie.
Doors are 4:30pm with show at 5pm. The Sebastiani Theatre is located at 476 1st Street East, Sonoma, California. Tickets are available on the Sebastiani website. For more info, please call the theatre office at 707.996.9756.

Pontchartrain Shakers (self-titled)
|
|
The Pontchartrain Shakers, a favorite Southeast Louisiana blues band, was formed in 2018 by Amedee Frederick and Jojjo Wight. They both have been playing professionally since teens and their musical family roots run deep.
Amedee "A5" Frederick is a fifth-generation blues artist with a three-and-a-half-octave vocal range and versatile guitar skills. Son of Amedee ‘Creole Man’ Frederick, A5 grew up playing blues with his father and was exposed to many Delta musicians who jammed with Amedee Sr. Among his roster of appearance, A5 has commanded the stage six consecutive years at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He's the standout singer on this debut album.
Partner Jojjo Wight is a guitar virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist. She started playing clubs on Bourbon Street as a child and took her first North American tour at age 17. She’s the daughter of Jamie Wright, one of the great traditional jazz revivalists of the 1960s. She’s performed at the French Quarter Festival for the last 18 years and also recorded with Charlie DeVore on GHB/Jazzology record to rave reviews.
Pontchartrain Shakers features 10 songs recorded with their band on Southland Records in New Orleans, Louisiana. The debut is bringing you the sounds of Louisiana as ambassadors steeped in the Blues.

And let's face it, sometimes you just can't help yourself when the music moves you! It's spontaneity at it's best. There are certainly a lot of chances to dance to blues-type music. Interpret the mood of the music and open yourself up to creativity. I love to dance... it's in there and it's gotta come out!!
