Alki UCC Weekly Messenger September 12, 2024
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

Last Sunday we embarked on a journey of getting to know the Bible. We posed the question: Where did the Bible come from? You can listen to the sermon (linked here).

The Bible was written by humans from a very long time ago, and across an immense expanse of time, who were seeking wisdom. Wisdom about God, about humanity, about themselves and their place in the world.

The Bible is a whole library of books that were told over the fire and at bedsides and in gathered sacred community and then written and rewritten over the course of 13 hundred years from people who sought wisdom.

The Bible is inspired by God, which literally means God-breathed. When we read and explore the Scripture, we can trust our innate spirituality, and that God is breathing among us and within us, inspiring our seeking of wisdom.

Let us join ancient letter writers and Gospel preachers, parable spinners and singer-songwriters. Let us be wisdom seekers.

The Bible is dynamic. We keep reimagining it and reinterpreting it. The Bible comes from all of us.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Alki UCC Donations Drive this Sunday
Food/Men's Work Clothing/Outdoor Gear Donations Drive
Sunday, September 15
11:00 am to 3:00 pm

Remember: You can bring your donations
to the church at any time!

This month's priority: FOOD FOOD FOOD!

Local food banks are facing a 40% increase in demand and only 1% more from their main suppliers. The demand for basics is high: tortillas, rice, beans, cereal, bread, canned meats/tuna, peanut butter, fruit, etc.

Fresh produce is even more important: if your garden is overflowing we will take your bounty! Nothing goes to waste!

Also needed: men's work clothing, LOTS OF new SOCKS, hygiene items and outdoor gear: tents, tarps, blankets, etc.

The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our donations drive partner, distributes your contributions through WIN's "The Welcome Table," a weekly Saturday meal for low income and unsheltered folks hosted in White Center.

This distribution serves as a stop-gap for many people relying on weekly visits to the food bank. Thank you for your generosity!
Let's Organize ... Let's Mobilize!
Join the Alki UCC Get Out the Vote Team
Your Outreach/Social Justice team is meeting on Tuesday, September 17 (time/place TBD) to discuss the impending November election and GOTV (get out the vote).

We're getting together to turn out the vote in our church and throughout the wider community. Is everyone registered to vote? How do we ensure that we are a 100% Voting Faith Community? How do we support each other in voting? Do you know about the four state propositions on the ballot? How do we best educate ourselves about them?

These are the questions we will explore as a group to help lead the congregation in anticipation of this critical election. Most importantly, we'll take action by sending letters to disengaged registered voters in critical swing states.

Please join us on Tuesday, September 17. Let Cinda know your late afternoon/evening availability so we can clarify the meeting time. Hope to see you there! — Cinda
