Photo Moments with the 22nd Annual BFG Magazine!
|
This was fun! I was stoked to meet up with Jimmy Carpenter in Memphis at the Blues Music Awards and here's our illustrious cover boy holding the annual. This gentleman is as genuinely affable in the flesh as he is a natural talent on the stage.
This saxman, singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer is a Grammy winning composer and multi Blues Music Award winner. The Gulf Coast recording artist has been in the music biz for 40+ years. He spent many years in New Orleans and currently resides in Las Vegas where is the musical director of the Big Blues Bender and leader of the Bender Brass.

Special "Music Maker Blues Revue" Sept 25
|
(DURHAM, NC) - In celebration of Music Maker’s 30th anniversary, a special “Music Maker Blues Revue” happens Weds, Sept 25, 6:30pm-8pm at Duke University’s American Tobacco Campus, 300 Blackwell St. in Durham, North Carolina. This outdoor concert is brought to us by the Music Maker Foundation and Duke Arts Presents, and features Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen, Albert White, Fred Thomas, and Leonard “Lowdown” Brown. Admission is free. Bring a chair or blanket, and also enjoy food and libations from Campus restaurants close by.
Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen shares the mettle, pathos, and ocean-deep compassion of blues singers like Billie Holiday and Etta James. Despite losing her home twice, she keeps bringing her talent and heart to the world, and was even featured on PBS Newshour for her one-woman shows at nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Albert White is a consummate blues guitarist who grew up playing behind his uncle, Piano Red, and would go on to share stages with the likes of Ray Charles, Rufus Thomas, and The Tams. The tradition of high-energy, funky R&B lives on in his playing, immortalized in his albums on the Music Maker label.
Fred Thomas helped invent funk music as bassist for James Brown and the JB’s over three-and-a-half decades. He is now stepping up to the mic himself, launching his solo career with the release of three singles this year on Curtis E Records.
Leonard “Lowdown” Brown is an electric guitar-slinging blues legend in the Houston music scene. His virtuosic fingerwork and formidable voice seem effortless, evidence of his raw talent and over four decades of dedication to his craft.
Drummer Ardie Dean has been keeping blues time since 1969, and is the de facto leader of the Music Maker Blues Revue, as well as a talented producer.
*On Oct 10, Music Maker Foundation and Duke Arts Presents also bring us a mosaic of American roots music’s for Music Makers 30th. The University’s Page Auditorium will feature Taj Mahal, Dom Flemons, and Jackson Browne.

Anniversary Tour to Celebrate 30 years of Ruf Records
|
Founded as a one-man operation in 1994, Ruf Records was the spark that lit the fuse for the spectacular mid-90s comeback of Chicago bluesman Luther Allison by his manager Thomas Ruf. Today, the German-based label is one of the most influential players on the international blues scene. In its three decades, Ruf has released hundreds of albums, been home to dozens of top-name blues acts and helped launch the careers of many of today’s most successful artists.
The East Coast will be happening during the month of November commemorating 30 years of Ruf Records. This anniversary tour starts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Nov 7th featuring the Grammy Award-nominated Samantha Fish and her fiery guitar skills and soulful vocals. Samantha and her band will be joined on stage by the legendary Mitch Ryder, known for one of the tightest and most hard- hitting blue-eyed soul acts of the ‘60s.
Also appearing are pioneers of Blues Rock, the legendary Canned Heat, famed as one of its best live acts and a most enduring force. The band is currently touring in support of their new Ruf Records release Finyl Vinyl. Canned Heat will be joined on stage by Ruf recording artist, Chicago native Bernard Allison, the youngest son of the late Luther Allison.
Ruf Records’ rising star Ghalia Volt will also bring her unique One Woman Band to the stage. Ghalia blends traditional Blues with modern influences. Her innovative approach and authentic sound highlight her dedication to preserving and evolving the rich legacy of North Mississippi Blues.

Reverend Shawn Amos :: VIVIR EN ESPAÑA
|
|
With Vivir En España, The Reverend Shawn Amos captures at last the fiery transcendence his music unleashes in front of an ecstatic crowd.
The recording wasn’t planned, but a few dates into a Spanish tour to support his acclaimed 2024 album Soul Brother No. 1, the charmed situation became clear — amazing audiences, killer new band, back catalog tunes and recently penned cuts alike bursting with electric life, everybody happy. Something special was definitely afoot and needed chronicling.
“I’ve always wanted to document the live aspect of what I do,” The Rev says. “I’m proud of my studio recordings, the musicianship and the sound. But the way I connect onstage – to the audience, to the band, to myself – is central to why I do this. Until now, that’s never been properly represented.”
Crucial to the sound of Vivir En España is the combustible trio of JT Loux on guitar and vocals, Ethan Pecha on bass and vocals, and Zach McCoy on drums and vocals. These Nashville-based twentysomethings are, The Rev says, “balls out rockers. They bring an edge to the material and make me a better bandleader. I re-engage with the songs in a different way, more exuberant, more in-your-face.”
Of the lucky audiences packed into Dabadaba (San Sebastian), and the Winter Indie City Festival (Segovia), The Rev unequivocally says, “Best audiences in the world. The Spanish fans walk in with their hearts wide open, and they’re with you from note one. Some audiences take a while to warm up. Not these folks.”
Indeed the fans are part of the show, from tent-revival clapping and stomping, to hopped-up hooting, to an unbridled scream response to one of The Rev’s harp solos, to rapturous singalongs — the people give what they get – a powerful, real-time experience of heartfelt soul.

Just in Case: September 25 is "National Daughter's Day." Let's honor daughter's of bluesmen that I've graced us with their own unique brand of blues and which we are grateful. Among them are: Teeny Tucker, daughter of Tommy Tucker; Carla Thomas and Vaneese Thomas, daughters of Rufus Thomas; Shemekia Copeland, daughter of Johnny Clyde Copeland; Shirley King, daughter of B.B. King; Carolyn Gaines, daughter of Roy Gaines; Carlise Guy, daughter of Buddy Guy; Demetria Taylor and Brenda Taylor, daughters of Eddie Taylor; and Rose Reed daughter of Jimmy Reed. And while they are not performers, I would be remiss not to mention women like Marion Diaz, daughter of Marion "Little Walter" Jacobs, who is the President of the Little Walter Foundation, and Barbra Marks and Bettye Kelly, Howlin' Wolf's (Chester Burnett) daughters who carry on his legacy via the Howlin' Wolf Foundation.
