Four Time Blues Music Award Winner Vanessa Collier does it her own way
|
Multi-instrumentalist/ songwriter Vanessa Collier released her sixth album, Do It My Own Way, earlier this month via Phenix Fire Records. Recorded on analog gear with the musicians largely in one room, Do It My Own Way is sonically inspired by the classic Memphis soul sound of Stax and Hi Records, especially that of the Staples Singers. Talking about the album, Collier adds, “It’s a warmer and darker sounding record, recorded intentionally to reflect a throwback to older school soul, R&B, and blues, and to the days of great songs and songwriters, tube amps and analog gear.” Do It My Own Way takes listeners back to the heyday of music with Memphis soul-influenced horn arrangements, layers of vocals for color, with poignant and powerful saxophone solos that deliver a quietly powerful undercurrent to each song and the album as a whole.
Minor key Americana/noir “Take Me Back” served as the first single. The album kicks off with the funk workout, “Elbow Grease.” On an album full of incredible grooves, “Shoulda Known Better” stands out, while “Just One More” sways to a rhumba beat. The gospel-tinged “Rosetta” pays tribute to one of Collier’s heroes, electric guitar pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Collier sings, “She’s carried the torch so I can see a little bit better… There’d be no Elvis or Chuck Berry. Sometimes the women do it best. She tackled all the inequities. And fought with strength and audacity.” The anthemic, slinky title track artfully comments on the sexism she’s encountered in life and in the music industry. Collier has encountered calls from members of the industry to dress in sexy clothes and to not rock the boat, but has successfully taken hold of her own career.

New documentary shines a light on Houston's overlooked blues tradition
|
Chicago is celebrated as a hub of the blues. Memphis, too. And, of course, the Mississippi Delta. But you don't hear as much about Houston, despite its size (the fourth-largest city in the country), its diversity, and its reputation for churning out musical talent (including, in recent years, Beyoncé, Lizzo and Travis Scott). A new documentary looks to give the city its bluesy due.
When Houston Had the Blues, streaming on video-on-demand platforms including Amazon, iTunes, and Apple TV starting Sept. 24, enlists veterans and observers of the scene to recall when the Third Ward and the Fifth Ward were hopping, the guitars and horns were wailing, and Peacock Records was shipping sides in volume. The film, directed by Alan Swyer, also describes how this golden age, primarily the 1930s, '40s, and '50s, came to an end, largely, and ironically, due to social progress.
There's no denying the roster of talent that sprang from or adopted Houston. There were guitar gods, including Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Albert Collins. The "Texas tenors," sax masters like Arnett Cobb and Grady Gaines, could toggle between blues, jazz and rock; Gaines played for Little Richard's band and can be seen soloing his guts out atop Richard's piano in the 1956 movie Don't Knock the Rock. And there were singers, including Bobby "Blue" Bland and an assortment of killer ladies, including Jewel Brown, the gleefully raunchy Katie Webster, and the fierce Willie May "Big Mama" Thornton, who gave "Hound Dog" a snarl before Elvis Presley ever got hold of it. Joe Bonamassa shares thoughts on modern blues rock
|
Joe Bonamassa is assuring blues rock fans that the genre is “not dead”—at least, it isn’t “yet.”
But the economic realities that touring musicians face these days do make it a tough job, one where success and fame often take years to achieve for even the most dedicated players.
“The cost of doing business is up,” Bonamassa said during a recent interview with Blues Rock Review. “Gasoline, hotels, lodging, meals—all of the trappings of the road that you have to pay for off the top line are more expensive. And so the margins are less.”
The three-time Grammy-nominated guitarist laughed a bit when he recalled an article he’d read in which one musician described themselves as “a T-shirt salesman,” a nod to the important role merchandise sales play for artists nowadays. “That’s a pretty cynical way to look at it, but, you know, the ancillary revenue on the road is more critical now than it’s ever been,” Bonamassa said. Even physical media has a different meaning to fans in the 21st century, with so many turning to streaming services for their music. The artists who take the time to sign the CDs they sell at shows need to be aware that, “chances are, that CD will never see the inside of a CD player,” Bonamassa said. “They’re autograph widgets, you know?”

Just in Case: "International Podcast Day" is celebrated on September 30. Podcasts have fundamentally changed the way people consume audio. Google Blues Podcasts and you'll come up with dozens of choices, not to mention other cool stuff you might find on NPR, PBS, and National Geographic. Plus, these days you can even make your own if you are so inclined.
October 1st is loaded with "holiday" mentions...
for instance it's "International Coffee Day" (an extra pick-me-up in order), "National Homemade Cookies Day" (bring it on neighbor),"International Day of Older Persons (respect), "National Hair Day" (more or less?), "CD Player Day" (you still have one?), and "National Black Dog Day" (loyal and lovable).
You could no doubt match some blues attributes to this list! And that's just October 1st! Ya gotta wonder how much time people have on their hands!!
Whatever you do, please keep smiling and diggin' the blues... It's good for the soul!
