Alki UCC Weekly Messenger October 3, 2024
From the Pastor
Dear Alki UCC,

As we continue our Bible 101 series, why not come up with a goal for something you’d like to learn or practice? Here are some ideas:

● Learn to recite the books of the Bible. YouTube is a great resource for practicing them as a catchy song!

● Memorize a favorite selection of Scripture. It can be a great comfort to lean on those treasured words when times are tough.

● Re-read a story from the Bible that has troubled you in the past. What might be there that you didn’t see before? Where is the grace?

● Re-imagine a Psalm through words or artwork, allowing the ancient text to evolve to resonate with your life today.

Or, maybe you will come up with something else! Perhaps you can share your goal or practice with someone in your life.

I would love to hear what you are learning and discovering about yourself, your faith and your relationship with God and the Bible.

God is ever breathing, always inspiring your journey. Blessings as you continue on the way.

In hope,
Pastor Emily

Clog Dance Lessons at Alki UCC
Begin This Sunday, October 6 ... Join us!
Sundays at 1:00 pm in Anderson Hall
Discover the joy of clog dancing, a lively percussive dance rooted in the Appalachian Mountains and influenced by Irish, Scottish, German and Native American traditions.

The term "clog" comes from the Gaelic word for "time," as dancers keep the downbeat of the music with their heel. While bluegrass is traditional music for clog dancing, today’s clogging embraces a wide variety of genres, from country to pop.

With more than 30 years teaching experience in the Pacific Northwest, I am excited to introduce you to the basics and beyond. By the end of the session, I guarantee, you will be hooked! No partner needed, you go at your own pace.

Dancers of all ages are welcome. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in a vibrant art form—join us in Anderson Hall on October 6! You are sure to be hooked! (oh, yea, I said that already, didn’t I?) He! He!

No registration necessary. Just show up ... we welcome newbies October 6, 13 and 27. Classes offered at no charge; all freewill donations support Alki Church UCC.

We give you gratitude for the relationships in our lives and our community of faith.

We pray for all those who grieve.
Comfort their hearts and hold them close.

We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.

We pray for Sandy J's cousin Barbara, Dan K facing various health issues, Rev. We pray for our wider world.
We pray for all those impacted by Hurricane Helene, including the loved ones of over 100 people who have died and over two million without power. We pray for the two UCC congregations on the Florida Gulf Coast that have suffered significant flood damage.

We pray for all the people and places in our world affected by war. We ask for wisdom for decision-makers and strength for justice-seekers. We pray for victims of violence, for refugees and asylum-seekers. We pray for all who are hungry, desperate, and in need of support.

In all of these things, we trust that you are with us. In all of these things, we ask for you to strengthen us. Help us to see you in those around us. Help us to love as you love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your Outreach/Social Justice team is focusing on the upcoming November election and GOTV (get out the vote). We would love for you to join us!

First of all: are you registered to vote? If so, have you moved recently? You must update your address with the WA State to receive your ballot at your new address. Manage both registration and updates at the WA State voter portal linked here

Let’s join forces to turn out the vote in our church and throughout the wider community.

Do you know about the four state initiatives on the ballot?

We'll explore these issues and, most importantly, we'll take action by sending letters to disengaged registered voters in critical swing states.

Let's explore different GOTV programs and get writing!

High Holy Days
at KHN
Jewish communities around the world welcomed a new year . with the observance of Rosh Hashanah (“Head of the Year”) yesterday October 2, as the sun set.

In observance of the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, many Jews fast on Yom Kippur (October 11-12), wear white and refrain from wearing leather or other luxuries. The Ten Days of Awe (or High Holy Days) are a time for spiritual accounting and renewal, and an opportunity to reflect on and repair relationships, both human relationships and the human-divine relationship.

A few days after Yom Kippur, the joyous holiday of Sukkot marks the end of the harvest season, followed by Simchat Torah (“Rejoicing with the Torah”), marking the completion of the annual Torah reading cycle.

Note:
The beautiful “paper cut” banner at the front of the Sanctuary, which will be in place through the High Holy days, depicts honey comb, pomegranate, apples and other bounty to celebrate the sweet promise of a new year.
