Celebration of Wichita’s Regional Blues Tradition
|
Seasoned blues musicians tell their own stories and paint a picture of the vibrant Black music scene in Wichita Blues: Music in the African American Community. The book explores the lively, and often overlooked Wichita blues tradition. In interviews with nineteen African American Wichita blues performers, author Patrick Joseph O’Connor reveals the evolution of the blues from the 1930s to the 1960s and beyond.
Utilizing twenty-five years of fieldwork, Wichita Blues details the history of performance and camaraderie among the musicians of this often-neglected regional sound. The personal interviews offer unique insight into topics that shape Wichita’s sound, including how migration from Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas brought varied artists to the area and the ways musical traditions cross racial divides and generations.
The author traces African American history in Kansas, ranging from the Exoduster movement in the late nineteenth century and minstrel shows across the state to Black cowboys and growing urban African American communities in Topeka and Wichita.
The book is published by University Press of Mississippi.

Mississippi MacDonald :: I GOT WHAT YOU NEED
|
|
Boldy opening his new album with a bumping Chicago shuffle that features deadly Albert Collins ice pick styled guitar leads, London singer, guitarist and songwriter Mississippi MacDonald makes a strong statement on the title track “I Got What You Need,” (composed by Memphian Sonny Mack) enticing a prospective lover and the listener with all the tricks and charms he has to offer.
The nine new tracks of I Got What You Need, his sixth solo album, showcase MacDonald as songwriter on four original songs and collaborator with ex-Malaco writer and Ecko Records owner, John Ward, on two songs, proving why he won two U.K Blues Awards in 2024 ans is a Take Me To The River allstar.
There’s horn infused R&B, pure Memphis soul, scorching down and dirty blues, swanky grooves, driving basslines, Stax sounds, and of course MacDonald’s formidable vocal and guitar chops. The album closes with a lovely duet of piano and guitar to accompany MacDonald’s heart wrenching vocal and emotional denouement. This new full-length effort will be a fine addition to MacDonalds’ growing musical catalog. He’s a rising talent making his mark on the soul-blues scene.

I will find it very hard to believe that anyone reading this has not howled at the moon at least once in their life! It's primal and cathartic. Let your wild side out. We know Howlin' Wolf did and we're better for it, wouldn't you say?! This day actually also has to do with the protection of wolves. You could even make some donations to animal and protection groups such as Wolf Haven.
