Photo Moments with the 22nd Annual BFG Magazine!
Tenor saxman Jonny Viau (lt) has built a reputation for himself over 40 years as one of the best and most authentic practitioners of 1950s rhythm ‘n’ blues and ’60s soul tenor sax. Along with numerous stints in the Southern California area, Jonny has recorded with such blues luminaries as the late William Clarke, Kirk Fletcher, Kid Ramos, James Harman, Kim Wilson and more. He's also toured the US and Europe with such artists as the late Roy Gaines and Candye Kane, plus Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, Mitch Woods and the Rocket 88s, and the Blues Beatles (from Brazil).

Tijuana native, guitarist extraordinaire Ritchie Orduño excels in Blues, Roots, Americana, rhythm & blues, Cumbia, Tex-Mex styles and more. Along with various bands over the years, he's a longtime member of the popular Los Sleepwalkers who celebrate their Chicano roots with music and brotherhood. They've been together for over 30 years and were the 2020 San Diego Music Awards "Best Americana" winners. They've shared stages with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Kid Ramos, and many more.

News Flash...
Anniversary Tour Celebrates 30 Years of the Ruf Records
In celebration of its 30th anniversary, Ruf Records is proud to announce a monumental tour that will showcase the legacy of one of the most influential labels in modern blues history.

Founded as a one-man operation in 1994, Ruf Records was the spark that lit the fuse for the spectacular mid-90s comeback of Chicago bluesman Luther Allison, thanks to Thomas Ruf. Today, the German-based label is one of the most influential players on the international blues scene. In its three decades, Ruf has released hundreds of albums, been home to dozens of top-name blues acts and helped launch the careers of many of today’s most successful artists.

Commemorating 30 years of Ruf Records, the anniversary tour begins in Pennsylvania Nov 7th with a star-studded celebration featuring the Grammy Award-nominated Samantha Fish, who has soared to the pinnacle of the Blues Rock scene with her fiery guitar skills and soulful vocals. Samantha and her band will be joined on stage by the legendary Mitch Ryder, known for one of the tightest and most hard-hitting blue-eyed soul acts of the ‘60s.

Also appearing are pioneers of Blues Rock, the legendary Canned Heat, unsung heroes of 60’s rock, famed as one of its best live acts and one of its most enduring forces. The band is currently touring in support of their new chart – topping Ruf Records release Finyl Vinyl. Canned Heat will be joined on stage by Ruf recording artist Bernard Allison. The Chicago native and is the youngest son of Luther Allison.

Ruf Records’ rising star Ghalia Volt will also bring her unique One Woman Band to the stage, blending traditional Blues with modern influences. Her innovative approach and authentic sound highlight her dedication to preserving and evolving the rich legacy of North Mississippi Blues.
Blind Pig releases new Jovin Webb album, Drifter
Jovin Webb dazzled millions of viewers on American Idol with his bayou mystique, his humility, and his distinctive gravelly vocals. Now, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based artist steps forward with his debut album, Drifter, produced by multi-Grammy winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, Kingfish).

The 12-song collection on Blind Pig Records is a vibrant mix of growing low-down blues, Jovin's wailing harmonica, heartfelt soul ballads, and rowdy, Little Richards-style rock 'n' roll.

Drifter is the sound of a blues life searching for a gospel redemption.

“It's me trying to figure out religion, women, my career, and everything I've gone through,” Jovin says.

The tracks on Drifter evoke a blues classicism without ever feeling nostalgic or derivative.

You can listen and purchase Jovin Webb's music here.

Gary Nicholson :: COMMON SENSE
Gary Nicholson is a Hall of Fame songwriter and Grammy® winner with credits in multiple genres including Blues (B.B. King, Buddy Guy), Country (Willie Nelson), pop (Ringo Starr), Rock (Fleetwood Mac), Folk (John Prine), Bluegrass (Del McCoury), Americana (Guy Clark), with over 700 recordings of his works, often in collaboration with the most iconic musical artists of our time. His songs have been featured in film as well, notably Jeff Bridges Oscar-winning performance of “Falling and Flying” from the movie Crazy Heart.

After a lifetime of contribution to American culture though music making, he has focused on addressing the current polarity in politics with the release of Common Sense, a twelve-song collection that speaks to the divisions our country now faces with hope and humor. His voicing on some of the tracks hits like a cross between some classic Delbert McClinton, Taj Mahal and Elvin Bishop. Honest and catchy, there’s an accessible variety of stylings to choose from here.

After coming of age through the turbulent sixties and experiencing the healing power of music to unite, Nicholson aspires to serve as well as entertain.

Just in Case: Oct 25 is "International Artist Day." Art is a creative human expression. Art portrays the beauty of life or a bitter reality. It records history, revolutions, rebellions, and sometimes is a means to escape them. In short, there is no history or culture without art.

This day celebrates and recognizes all forms of art, it's impact, and the expressive and creative minds behind it — painters, sculptors, photographers, architects, musical artists (of course!), and much more. Amen!
