Kick back at the Big Island Blues Festival Nov 16
|
(KAILUA KONA. HI) – “A good blues player has the ability to strike a chord deep within your soul and take those bottled up feelings of sadness, love, hope, and sorrow and smash it against a brick wall to set them free.”
Off the Grid Productions presents the 4th Big Island Blues Festival. Original Blues music, local brews, unique vendors, delicious BBQ cuisine, all in an inviting atmosphere. The event takes place Sat Nov 16th from 5pm-10pm in beautiful Kailua Kona at the Kona Brewery. Unplug from the daily stresses of life and come enjoy some tasty food and great live music featuring Lightning Larry Dupio, Tomi Isobe and Blues Dogs, and Overtime.
Blues music most certainly gave life to so many musical genres that came after it, setting the foundation for almost all popular music in the 20th century. Don't be fooled by the blues' basic musical structure that's fairly simple to play – that only makes conveying a song's message even more difficult, which is why the blues singers' styles are so deeply rooted in passion and emotion.
This is a family-friendly music event. All ages (10 & under free). Outside blankets and chairs allowed. Tickets available on Eventbrite.

Bobby Rush - "You’re Gonna Need A Man Like Me"

Happy 91st Birthday Nov 10

|
Katie Henry’s latest project, Get Goin’ on Ruf Records, shows off a whole lot more of what she has to offer. It drops her square into an unfamiliar musical setting and sees her rise to the occasion. Backed by the crack band of celebrated bluesrocker Bernard Allison (who produced the album and contributed two songs), Henry raises her game and delivers her finest performances to date.
“Working with Bernard Allison and his band was a blessing,” beams Henry. Though she is surrounded by experienced players on Get Goin’, Henry's growing abilities as a singer, guitarist and keyboard player, not to mention her adept songwriting and magnetic personality, are the heart and soul of the album.
Hearing the vulnerability Henry displays on tracks such as “Wake Up Time” and “A Doll’s Heart,” it’s impossible not to feel that her newest compositions come from a place deep within her. Henry and the band also kick up a storm or three on Get Goin’, as evidenced in the sizzling, guitar-driven blues rock of “Love Like Kerosene” and the brooding back-alley beat and big payoff crescendo of “Jump.”
Producer Bernard Allison seized the chance to work with Henry in the studio and feels he achieved his goal of bring out all her strengths. “This album presents multiple sides of Katie Henry,” says Allison. “I felt that was missing on her previous album. Her vocals, keyboards and guitar all sit in the right place on this production.
