Dear Alki UCC,
Last Sunday in our Bible 101 series we explored Wisdom Stories. Our Holy Scripture personifies wisdom as a woman standing at the crossroads and calling out to all who live. She says, I have been with God since the beginning. I am creative, come and imagine a new future with me, play with me, delight in creation with me.
We create ways to imagine a new future together, with wisdom. You can listen to the sermon *here.*
Church, this is a time for wisdom. As we wonder what’s next for our country, for our families and friends, for our future. As a faith community, we also have change coming for which we will need wisdom. Our beloved music director, Stephen Anthony Rawson announced last Sunday that he and his partner Marcella will be moving to Michigan for her new position at the University of Michigan as Acquiring Editor for Asian Studies and African Studies.
We are so glad for them and wish them well, and yet, change is hard. We pray for wisdom for Stephen and Marcella as they venture into this next chapter, and for Stephen as he looks for what’s next in his music career. We pray for wisdom for Alki UCC as we re-engage our Music Director Search Committee. We know that God will be with all of us, guiding with compassion, as we go from here.
Stephen will be leading music at Alki UCC through the Advent and Christmas seasons, and so we still have some time with him. We’ll also have an opportunity to celebrate and thank Stephen after worship on December 15.
Let us make the most of our time together, enjoying one another in our collaborative, co-creative ministry. Let us go forward with wisdom.
In hope,
Pastor Emily

Call for Poems and More to Help Plan Thanksgiving Gratitude Sunday Worship
on November 24
|
Lay-led worship on November 24 is a chance for the Alki UCC community to come together, share and support each other as we seek to uncover that for which we are thankful.
Even though we're calling the service a Poetry Sunday, in addition to poems, your offering can be a story, a testimonial, a musical contribution or anything else to share a positive message of thanksgiving.
You are welcome to share your offering during worship or ask someone else to present your selection.
Please confirm your participation and offering title
as soon as possible
so we can plan the service!
no later than Friday, November 22.
During these times, gratitude can be an illusive commodity. I can think of no greater gift than sharing our collective spirit, creativity and insights.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you,
— Joe M
Note: Service on November 24 is in-person only. No Zoom!

Call to Help Create 2024 Alki UCC Entry
for
Fauntleroy UCC Festival of Trees
|
Last year was Alki UCC’s first year entering the Fauntleroy UCC Festival of Trees event, and the experience was a lot of fun and successful.
Our Alki UCC by the Sea entry paid off in spades as hundreds of pounds of donations for the West Seattle and White Center Food Banks were deposited at the base of our tree throughout the festival.
We have been invited to participate again this year.
If you are interested in helping create a tree for the festival this year please email me soon and we will coordinate a brainstorming session! — Aly H

A Mindfulness Reminder:
Correct Trash Separation
|
Please take note of the new waste cans in the parlor ... courtesy of the Social Outreach team.
Look before you toss!!
Take a minute to confirm what goes in what receptacle. All our hospitality hour cups are compostable, and more often than not the all the tableware is also compostable.
Every week people put their beverage cups in all three bins. It would be so helpful if you dispose of your items correctly on the front end so our hard-working volunteers don’t end up having to sort them on the back end.

In the November Spotlight:
Plastic Election Yard Signs
Have you ever wondered what happens to the countless election yard signs around our community? It’s estimated that tens of millions of plastic campaign signs were manufactured in this highly active election year, but almost none of them will be properly recycled.
The Outreach/Social Justice team is working with Ridwell to repurpose plastic campaign, yard signs and the metal stands. Rather than throwing your sign in the trash you can bring it to the sustainable cubby area in the church Narthex throughout November.
On December 1, the team will deliver the recyclable parts to Ridwell where they will be turned into a post-consumer resin that provides an alternative to virgin resin for manufacturers of items like planter pots and pipes.
Cheers, — Aly
We always accept: wine corks, plastic lids smaller than three inches, small batteries, bread tags, empty prescription bottles, standard size light bulbs and two types of plastic: Plastic Film (shipping bags, plastic bags, overwrap, air pillows and other stretchy plastics!) and Multi-layer plastic (food storage bags, pet food bags, frozen food bags, and more layered packaging).
(Note: We don't take plastic wrap like Saran Wrap. But any other stretchy plastic we do.)

Ever-present God, we give you thanks. We give you gratitude for the relationships in our lives and our community of faith.
We give joyful thanks for Charlie H and Scott L who were married on November 11 and we join them in celebration. May God bless them in their life together.
We pray for all those who grieve.
Comfort their hearts and hold them close, especially Shannon P who asks for prayers on the passing of her beloved father, Rev. Bill P on Monday, October 28. Please grant all of us who knew him peace and strength in this time of grief. May we feel God’s presence and love, providing comfort in every sorrowful moment. Please guide his soul to eternal rest, and surround our family with warmth and healing light. Help us cherish his memory and honor his legacy with love.
We pray for all those who are ill, hurting or have a concern on their hearts.
Prayers of hope and strength for Pastor Emily's friends: Rich, Julie and Bryson.
We pray for our Peruvian immigrant friends and for all who seek peace and safety in our country, for Sandy J's cousin Barbara, Dan K facing various health issues, Rev. Joan C, Cinda's mother Jackie S, Julia C's friend Jessie T and family, Amy Y's mother Corlene, Davney and Bob S, Sue's B's friends Mary and Louise, and Nick L.
We pray for our wider world.
Our hearts go out to the many people who are suffering in areas affected by natural disasters and the ongoing effects of climate change.
We pray for all the people and places in our world affected by war. We ask for wisdom for decision-makers and strength for justice-seekers. We pray for victims of violence, for refugees and asylum-seekers. We pray for all who are hungry, desperate, and in need of support. In all of these things, we trust that you are with us. In all of these things, we ask for you to strengthen us. Help us to see you in those around us. Help us to love as you love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
